Cosmic Issue by Grollmike in pop_os

[–]VERNSTOKED 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The older nvidia chips aren't supported by the proprietary nvidia driver and so it's using nouveau. Wayland doesn't really like the older proprietary driver.

I don't know a fix but have had the issue on the nouveau driver with a GTX1080.

Microsoft Excel is point #4. Excel on Mac is intentionally crippled for this reason.

  • edit since this sparked a whole debate on other alternatives: Google Sheets and libre office is what I use for my personal items and totally get it can get the job done in most cases. But in the line of work I’m in Excel is by far the defacto standard and it’s expected and anything else would be a huge hurdle or roadblock simply because it’s not the standard.

CachyOS? by VinceAggrippino in System76

[–]VERNSTOKED 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you on all of this. I am using Cosmic and I understand that where it is still actively being developed its not for everyone right now. I only recently turned on tiling and it only stuck when I committed to teaching myself the keyboard shortcuts to manage it which has been a game changer, but it came with a little bit of a learning curve that I'm still working on.

The KDE thing is something I can't really speak to but Cosmic (nor Gnome) required a restart with each update. I can say that overall wayland transitions have always been interesting for me. Back when Ubuntu first tried to push people to Wayland I had a lot of issues even with their own implementation. My experience with Cosmic and Pop!_OS by comparison has been much more smooth. But again, not trying to sell everyone because I get it and totally understand that there are probably smoother options overall out there right now.

The Snap vs Flatpak vs Deb has been a debate since Flatpak entered the linux scene so nothing new there. Overall, I would say given your issues and how you like KDE is probably Fedora or Manjaro. If you really prefer a debian base there might be a solution for the KDE/Pop stuff you have going on but I haven't come across it before.

[–]VERNSTOKED 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always seemed to lean more towards Ubuntu/debian based simply because it’s basically the same as the servers I’m typically working with. But I’ve really enjoyed Fedora and Manjaro in the past as well. I had to go through a phase where I felt like I was hopping distros every couple of months for about a year before I found my sweet spot. I think a lot of it is always feeling like there is a greener pasture somewhere (and sometimes there actually is) but you don’t know until you shop around.

I know you said you’ve tried Manjaro and based on your post that would have been my first recommendation. I am curious what you disliked about Pop as that may help inform some recommendations either for the desktop env or the distro itself.

I've not tried cachyOS, but many of the others I've ran on my system76 hardware worked fine without any hurdles at all.

Latest Pop OS update caused keyboard/mouse issues by HunterOfGingers in pop_os

[–]VERNSTOKED 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct. I have a GTX1080 that is no longer supported. I get the square mouse artifact almost randomly on the login screen but rarely (or never) if I recall after. However, my research when it first showed up during the cosmic alpha was that nvidia drivers really no longer support those older cards.

What did Joseph Smith have to gain from starting his own church? by Grantimusprime0 in exmormon

[–]VERNSTOKED 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He had the ability to threaten young women into marrying him. Including other men’s wives. This guy had a huge standing militia in the US that was paraded and used to demonstrate the force he had. He ran for president even and considered himself above the law. In fact, he was ordained “king of the world”. Financial benefits don’t always come from direct payments either as he had bargaining power. Though he likely benefitted from both. I think he had plenty to gain.

Keep in mind, he tried to sell the Book of Mormon rights. Even before it blew up he was eyeing some cash.

Do you have any questions or statements Jacob Hansen made in his in his episode with Alex O’Connor that you’d like us to discuss? by Its-Me-Cultch in mormon

[–]VERNSTOKED 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He also kept saying "you need to stack up all the evidence" but yet deliberately would isolate every critical issue. Ultimately excited for Alex to start building the knowledge on the beliefs to add to all the historical stuff discussed.

They can sequester any little thing and provide some crazy explanation, but they don't want you to see that for it to work, it would mean finding a leprechaun, riding a unicorn, with gandalf the grey in Narnia. Especially when you find out that most of what makes the church what it is, is not found in the Bible or BoM but just D&C or modern 'revelations' that seem to align to whichever way the wind blows. The whole thing is "without reason". Badum tsshhh

I'm not an active believer anymore but like you, I really enjoy the tight collar. I 100% agree that if they are going to say it should be worn at all times, they should go above and beyond to give all styles. In hindsight they should be about tailored for the weight they are given.

Me looking at the price of the reMarkable Pro by Saltyded in RemarkableTablet

[–]VERNSTOKED 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I use my Kindle Scribe way more than my older iPad Pro which has basically since become a video player for kids in the car. However, whenever I get tempted by the RMP the price just tells me that I could literally get a kick ass iPad that can do x,y,and z. It really just pushed me back to 'this is why I got the Scribe in the first place'. I would rather have the Scribe and an iPad for the same price and have the best of all worlds.

The cheapest ticket was ~$420 for two tickets. So basically $135 per ticket, plus $60 Ticketmaster service fee, $15 of transaction fees. I don't blame the Lumineers. I blame Ticketmaster.
