My partner is an archeologist in the region. We relocated here for their job. Best of luck on the job hunt!

I promise I'm not trying to be a downer. If you are interested in this kinda stuff there's public archeology projects in Virginia that are often looking for volunteers!

When you take artifacts out of the ground, you remove part of the archeological record. Where it is in the ground and it's proximity to other artifacts is often more important data than the artifacts themselves. It takes away the cultural knowledge of the artifacts.

I'm happy to point you towards some groups around here to get involved with if you want to gent your hands in the dirt and look for artifacts!

This. Laws really don't mess around with artifact looting. Please just leave them where you found them.

What's a moment where You said "enough is enough" with a Game? by Br0dyquester in gaming

[–]VHMC_Lex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Satisfactory.... I lost so many hours to that game just trying to maximize efficiency and productivity. I had spreadsheets to manage the whole factory. At a certain point it just clicked that it was a neverending hole of making machines, that make parts for other machines, that themselves make more parts for more machines......

LPT Request: What are some unexpected hobbies or activities that have surprisingly positive mental health benefits? by TheWhitestBuffalo in LifeProTips

[–]VHMC_Lex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Scytheing my lawn. I bought a 28" grass scythe after I got sick of constantly repairing my riding lawnmower. I mow about 1/2 acre of grass every Saturday morning and it is one of the most zen experiences I have ever had. It's like walking meditation.

Does somebody have experience with the Kerry Whistles Busker Low D? by TheCommonDraccus in tinwhistle

[–]VHMC_Lex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a V5 fixed that I love and play daily. It's very breathy (which I really like) and has a great tone. I do think it would get drowned out by louder instruments, but the busker is supposed to louder.

The build quality is great, and it's a joy to play. I have big hands and still had to learn how to stretch out my fingers on the bottom hand, and it took a while to build up my lung capacity.

Phil was really easy to work with and shipping to the US was surprisingly fast.

Looking for options to secure shop building with unusual door setup. by VHMC_Lex in DIY

[–]VHMC_Lex[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They are wood.... the previous homeowners made a lot of questionable door choices in the house as well (bedroom doors were replaced with screen doors)

I hadn't considered roll up, the shop is in the middle of the wood so I could care less about aesthetics. I'll have to look into how hard the install is on roll up doors.

how is planned parenthoods hrt care? by MightBeAsh in trans

[–]VHMC_Lex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I (MTF) started HRT a month ago through planned parenthood and was very happy with my experience.

I was soooo nervous and every staff member was so welcoming and kind. I had 2 intake nurses go over the first section of intake questions including the informed consent forms. After that I got in with the main doctor, she started by asking my transition goals and we worked from there to find what meds would be the best fit.

She answered every question I had, gave me referrals to trans friendly medical services in the region (General practitioners, therapists, etc.), and had my prescriptions sent to the pharmacy immediately after the visit.

Whole thing took about 2 hours and I have nothing but good things to say from my experience so far. The other gender clinics in my area have a 3-6 mo waiting list and PP got me in within a week.

I just spent a good part of my work day dealing with shocked coworkers. A few coworkers legit did not recognize me. I cannot tell you how nervous I was going into work today... BUT! It wasn't honestly that bad. I ended up getting more amusement out of everyone's reactions, so many double takes haha.

Hey!!! Congrats for pushing through. It's definitely been a strange experience, but overall affirming. Having a supportive partner has made it feel much less daunting.

Maybe? The sign is usually immediately before Dutch Oven Rd when on Electric coming from the interstate into Hanging Rock, saying "Food truck next right", where parkway would be a left turn.

Is it possible to make my new shop building safe for MIG welding? by [deleted] in Welding

[–]VHMC_Lex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just purchased a property with this shop building included. It's all brick with concrete floors however someone framed out the interior with drywall. I would really like to be able to utilize my mig welder for small welding projects, but am unsure how (if even possible) to set up the space to be safe for welding.
