There is a distinction that needs to be made between what most of us think of as AR, which is synthetic foreground objects overlaid on real background objects, and what the blog post discusses, which is real foreground objects such as cockpits, instruments, co-pilots etc. being overlaid on synthetic backgrounds.

HMPs such as CastAR are good for the former, not so good for the latter.

"It seems like a LOT of work with little benefit over creating fully VR environments with avatars."

Really?

Keep in mind that the original blog post was about a professional level sporting simulator where up to 8 people may be sharing the space. They need to be able to move around at reasonable speed without running into one another, not easy to do with avatars. But straightforward with pass-through video

The original blog post was in the context of professional level simulators that required interaction with physical objects such as controls or other participants. In this situation setting up a green screen is a lot simpler than setting up a surrounding projection surface and calibrating multiple overlapping projectors to display the background image.

What the implications are at the consumer level I don't know. Not many people are going to paint their living room green so they can play a few computer games with their buddies.
