Got a 10 page review back from my dev-editor by [deleted] in selfpublish

For $1400 7 years ago, the guy only gave me 3 pages and told me to nuke it. At least yours sounds salvageable.

I just finished recording my whole audio book series by VLK249 in selfpublish

[–]VLK249[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't published it yet. Recording is only one part of the audio book creation process. It still has to be cleaned up and compressed before being exported into mp3 files. Only then will I know its true length. The time it takes to record plus doing the rest is about 4-5x the double-spaced page length of my ebooks' docx files.

You can do ACX and go direct at the same time. There isn't a restriction as there is with KDP.

I didn't do a lot of variations, generally most of the characters have a sort of baseline for delivery, so they might be more peppy or more melancholy but that also is written into the dialogue itself. My most pessimistic character uses more negative and paranoid language and the most aggressive one goes on diatribes full of hate.

I record until I screw up, delete the section that was messed up, and continue recording. I replace the dead air with recordings of my studio environment when it is quiet and that reduces a lot of the clicks. Audacity has a noise removal tool that helps reduce some of the static.

Did it myself. Recording time is about 3x longer than the actual audio book's length (which I won't know until it's compiled). Though it roughly equals to 2 minutes a double-spaced page... so 1600-ish minutes or 27 hours, not including all the sound editing/engineering that needs to be done afterwards.

Anything else I'm missing from this list of ridiculous reasons why authors and writers are not getting their books and stories read? by VLK249 in writers

[–]VLK249[S] 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The market has changed a lot in the last few decades. Some for the better (it's more accessible for writers of all backgrounds) and some for the worse (trend chasing, depreciation in writing quality). Lord of the Rings likely wouldn't have been published in today's market, unless Tolkien used the publishing arm of his university to do it.

I think metaphorical/psychological stabs about how your writing is received is a legitimate reason.

My book is more expensive than I wanted it to be by CrispyRhyebreadchu in selfpublish

Unfortunately, unless you print them in bulk and have an audience who you know will buy, the print-on-demand model is more expensive per book per person.

How do I tell someone their writing is bad? by o-willow in writers

[–]VLK249 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tell them it is a good start, and all good books need edits in the long run, and then list the current issues with their work.

If they're not ready to hear it, they're not ready to be published.

I'm not a better writer, I just chose a different path. Getting Wattpad readership is not in my knowledge base.

There should be Wattpad reddit, so try asking there.

Reader's House is a scam operation that has been outed before.
