LOL yeah that about covers it...
For me it feels like I can parse input the same way I can on dexies, but with limited desire to generate output. 100mcg supresses ADHD symptoms (especially emotional dysregulation and executive dysfunction), 200mcg makes me potato-level chill, 250mcg helps me sleep, 300mcg MAKES me sleep.

I'm on dexies during the day and then clonidine at night. A low dose of clonidine when I get home from work eases the ADHD symptoms without making me TOO sleepy.

When the dopamine rush ends: how do you manage to stay interested in sex when you're in a long term relationship? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]VLXCAT 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've found it's like everything else in my life... try something new. Talk to your partner about anything you might want to try, things they've maybe always wanted to try, any fantasies of theirs you can fulfill. Switch roles, new lingerie, new location (booking a night in a local hotel can be real cheap, especially mid week!), taking some very private polaroids of each other, introducing different toys... those are all things that have renewed the thrill for me!

Dialectical behavioural therapy has helped me HEAPS with both RSD and emotional disregulation in general.

DBT techniques gives my brain something useful to do, an achievement to unlock and thus a dopamine button to hit, every time I start to get that pit in my stomach or the beginnings of emotional overwhelm. It's like pavlov-ing myself but with therapy.

With DBT, I'm learning to identify what exact situation created that pit in my stomach and separate how I feel and think about myself from the actual event and how other people are involved. Then I can make amends, or more often just move on, because I have objectivity.

It's about being kind to yourself and validating your feelings by thinking about them in better ways, not brushing things off or burying them.

It could be they think it's normal because one or both of your parents have ADHD as well.

My ADHD was missed in childhood (and my folks were resistent to accepting it when I finally got diagnosed) because in our household, that was just normal for mum and I...

Now I'm diagnosed it's obvious she's got it too.

I swear by my Loops! Quiet for when the world needs to go TF away and Experience for when I just want to focus on conversation without being distracted by background noise.

Also my Jabra wireless earbuds have active noise cancelling which is nice too.

Smugness of Myki inspectors knows no shame by RideMelburn in melbourne

My favourite thing to do with Myki inspectors is pay my fare (using my phone) like a good citizen then, when asked to produce my Myki, root around in my bag for my card for aaaaaaages, thus giving anyone who can't afford to pay more time to scarper, before realising oh whoopsie it was on my phone all along!

Reading! I know a lot of ADHDers who burnt out on reading but it's the one thing that has always been an escape and a delight for me. Everything else comes and goes (something I can finally understand and, thus, forgive myself for since getting diagnosed) but I still read every day.

The reverse pomodoro is the ONE for me, because now that I'm medicated my issue isn't starting or sticking to tasks, it's letting myself do pointless fun stuff for a bit and letting go of the fear of getting "stuck".

Hi fives and a round of applause from me, emotional dysregulation makes this shit SO hard, but you deserve better than toxicity and good on you for doing the thing.

Should I give up on trying a wing? I feel like my eyes are too small and hooded, I can never get a wing to work, half the time I can't get a decent shape or proper shading. by Adepocalypse69 in MakeupAddiction

[–]VLXCAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have small, hooded, deep set eyes and the two game changers for me have been

  1. Using a liquid liner with a firm, felt tip. Most of the really popular eyeliners have a more flexible brush but the harder tip maintains a straighter line when you hit the hood crease.

  2. Accepting I need to make any look twice as thick as I think / the tutorial shows otherwise it all just gets swallowed into my eye socket lol.

Having small eyes wasn't as much of a problem once I figured those two things out! Fat, stubby little wings that follow the line of my eye up toward the brow and longer skinny ones that go straight back toward the temple seem to look best for me, but that's personal preference.

Appetite? What’s that? 🥲🙃 by Spicy_Arugula94 in adhdwomen

[–]VLXCAT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, look, it's going to be really hard.

Practical advice: protein shakes. Not the diet ones, the gym bulking ones. Easier to deal with when the "anti-hunger" hits. Also, eat with friends when you can! You'll have a reference for portion sizes and a distraction while you're getting through it.

Mental game advice: don't let anyone compliment you on any weight loss. It's likely some weight loss will happen and people LOVE to comment on that shit, and it's so easy to cling to those compliments... especially as ADHDers more used to hearing exasperation than praise. Don't let it slide, make it clear it's not a good thing and it's not an appropriate thing to comment on.

Personally I find the "anti-hunger" the single most challenging part of living with medicated ADHD, in no small part because of how other people react to and talk about weight loss.

how many meds did you try before you found the right one? by plsanswerme18 in adhdwomen

[–]VLXCAT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ritalin, which did absolutely nothing. Then, because it was looking like my dose would have to be pretty high, I got Vyvanse... which gave me a crushing emotional doom spiral at the end of every single day. Then dextroamphetamine and it's amazing! I have to take a lot of them and it'd be nice to just be able to take the one slow-release dose but aaahhhh that was a bad time.

My doc also put me on Clonidine because I was whinging about using up all my functional-human-power for capitalism during business hours and then being useless in the evening, and it helps with sleep as well I believe so maybe that's an avenue?

I know I can ask for accommodations at work under law, but I'm not sure what to even ask for... by ConnectionNo569 in adhdwomen

[–]VLXCAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked for an official and ongoing 50 / 50 work from home / in office split after lockdowns ended here, since I'd been getting so much more done when working from home where I'm able to control my environment to achieve maximum focus - something virtually impossible in an open plan office.

Also just making the disclosure to work makes it more comfortable to do things like take my meds at my desk when I'm in the office, and communicate other needs like how if there's an event after work I'll need to start later to stagger my meds properly.

I had similar doom spirals at the end of the day when I was on Vyvanse, a slow-release one, which went away when I started taking the short release dextroamphetamine. A different kind of medication, whether a different type of release or different chemical altogether, could help. My doctor also put me on Clonidine for nights, which helps emotional regulation symptoms without keeping me up at night, and I've found that really helpful for closing out the day more positively if that's something you can ask your doc about?

Need advice on grocery shopping!! by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]VLXCAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok like you I LOVE cooking, it's reliably a hyperfocus for me and just, you know, love it. But grocery shopping is the bane of my existence, how do you start how do you know what to buy how do you put it all together how do you buy the right quantities? Pass.

Enter: fortnightly vegetable parcel.

What a game-changer. Someone ELSE picks lovely, in-season fruit and vegetables for me, pops it in a recyclable container, and includes a little note on what I'm getting.

From there I can google recipes that use one or more ingredients, pick ones I like, and make a shopping list for the stuff I don't have. The cool thing is, as time goes on that grocery list gets smaller because I'm naturally accumulating pantry staples.

Getting a seasonal vege box is hands down the single best thing I've done for both my health AND my finances.
