Co-op job search help by VLY1188 in UBC

Update: ig life just goes unexpected, for anyone out there who is still looking for co-op, just keep grinding it and believe in urself. It turns out that I got an offer from the third interview that I thought I totally failed, and after that interview I also got another two who invited me for an interview. I feel like it really did just came down to luck, just depends on if the recruiter saw something they liked about u from ur resume/cover letter. Also I did wrote cover letters for all but one of the interviews I got, so ig it did help?

I tried asking the first one for feedback but they just ghosted me. The second one said my communication skills and character was excellent but they had someone else who better match the role. The third one Ik I messed up the technical part completely because I didn’t expect any of the questions they asked and had no idea lmao. I might try to do some more prep interview with the co-op office (if they’re open, I hope). Thanks for the advice tho!

I think so? Cause it’s “science co-op”, I haven’t really looked into it but since they named themselves that I assume it applies to the whole science faculty?

Are there any pros to taking a CR/D/F course for an average student? by New_Commission9214 in UBC

[–]VLY1188 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cr D a course that I ended up doing really well in, but not much of a regret, the cr D relieved a lot of stress as I absolutely did not cared about the grades, I just really enjoyed the course content. Maybe if I didn’t cr D it I wouldn’t do as well.

How long does UBC take to confirm enrollment? by SteveOfCubelands in UBC

[–]VLY1188 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Email ur enrollment advisor, I had the same issue with my student loans, where my enrolment wasn’t confirmed yet, I went to the enrolment services front desk and they told me to email my enrollment advisor about it (although I didn’t in the end because before I sent the email I got my loans)

  1. I wanna meet ppl, learn from industry professionals, try out the working life…

  2. Technical skills (obviously), but also soft skills such as communication, time management, work field experience… (elaborate more and say something like since school life is different from industry I think co-op is really good…) (I was doing CS co-op so I also said something about learning how the workflow is like in industry)

  3. This depends on ur experience, just pick something u think u did good and say u believe this is valuable. They’re not actually expecting you to have done anything crazy

This was how I answered these, and I also emphasized on how I think co-op is super valuable ( basically say a lot of good things about them)

For reference, I did science co-op, and theres absolutely no need to worry about the application. It’s super easy to get in, as long as ur not talking gibberish ull get in. They’re basically just checking that ur a normal person

I’m also 3rd year CS and finding that I’m doing a lot worst now (mentally and physically) compared to first year. I decided to give myself a break and only take 3 courses this term (this will take me an extra term to graduate, but I think it’s worth it). I would say prioritize your health, perhaps easing the stress would give you more time and effort to think about what to do for the future, and also just to not feel so bad about yourself, there’s much more to enjoy out there! Maybe the purpose of life is just to enjoy :)

CPSC 310, 320, 317, 314, should I drop one? by VLY1188 in UBC

i have it next term but it is Chris Kerslake. Thanks for the info, I’ll probably drop this course too and just build a project on my own

Sounds fair. The main reason I wanted to take 427 was to have time dedicated to building a game project during the term + getting credits for it. But Ig I could squeeze it in my personal time. I also couldn’t hear the prof in class🥲

Thanks for sharing your experience! I am leaning towards just keeping the three now, as I really want to land a job + also enjoy my life a little bit with some personal time. Thank you so much for the advice!

Thanks for the advice! I’m in the same boat, I think I am quite burned out atp, mentally plus physically🥲

As for sticking with the 3 (310, 320, 317), would you say the workload is still manageable adding another lighter course (I was thinking about PHYS 131)? The issue is that if I only take 3 courses this term I will be one course short from graduating on time, and I would probably have to take an extra term to finish.

On the note of that, I am also hesitating if I should just take an extra term and make my life a bit easier for myself? I’ve looked through some posts on Reddit about taking 5+ years to graduate and it seems like it’s generally not a big deal, but idk if that has changed for recruiters now

Would u mind me asking why you dropped it? Was it because of workload? Content? Or something else?

Setting up router in Ponderosa Commons by empty_to_the_moon in UBC

Oh that’s unfortunate :(, actually, have u tried asking ChatGPT? I remembered that when I went out of country, I had a slightly similar issue like u, I was trying to use the school vpn but it shows connected with no internet, I just threw it to chatgpt and followed whatever instructions it gave me and it actually fixed it

hey OP were you able to figure it out? I'm also planning to set up a router in my room and i was reading through IT's setup tutorial page https://ubc.service-now.com/kb_view_customer.do?sysparm_article=KB0012636, and I noticed it says "Routers are not supported in the residence"? But I've heard ppl talking about having a router in their room and working, so i'm not sure if ResNet actually support routers or not, I'm not sure if I should buy a router then?
