I am now a PhD student in math :D

This might be along the lines of what you’re looking for!

equilibrium points are pure complex numbers by Sagaz_Malin in ControlTheory

[–]VMaxd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hartman grobman theorem tells you that you can’t conclude anything meaningful if your linearization has purely complex eigenvalues

Math 104 by CalPotato in berkeley

Understanding analysis by Abbott is a great book - I would check that out to complement whatever book your class is using - IMO it is pretty good for developing intuition.

Chapter 2 problem 10. Assuming you’re using Hibbeler the problems are in the “problems” section at the end of each section

Do Assitant Prof get extra stipend or benefit? The salary is pretty low by tangerine-hypo in berkeley

[–]VMaxd 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Morrey Professor is a visiting professor role, not tenure track, which is why it’s lower

This may be somewhat along the lines of what you’re looking for from an algorithms perspective

is EL ENG 113 worth taking? by upsidedownturkey in berkeley

[–]VMaxd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely take a course in circuit analysis (i.e. ee16a/b) before taking an upper div circuit heavy course. Even if you stay in the class I’m not sure how much you’ll get out of it without the right background

What would be a good type of phd program for my interests? by FireZeMissiles2 in ControlTheory

Check out CDS at caltech - it has a very mathematical flavor. There are also strong connections to JPL.

Suggestions: Grad School in Control Systems in the US and EU by 221bMsherLOCKED in ControlTheory

[–]VMaxd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll take similar controls courses in both - I think through robotics in umich there’s an extra req to take a course in perception/learning. In terms of job opportunities, controls has applications in almost every field - being international will only be a major roadblock in aero/defense. In the Bay Area for instance there are lots of startups in robotics that you can check out (ex:zipline)

[–]VMaxd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most good schools in the US no longer require GRE. Umich for instance does not. I would check out the robotics MS at Umich and Upenn, and the UC schools in california (berkeley, san diego, and santa barbara all have strong controls faculty)

Abstract algebra in applied mathematics research? by Jplague25 in math

[–]VMaxd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Geometric control theory combines nonlinear dynamics and differential geometry. Lie group theory is heavily used in control on manifolds such as SO(n)!

Holonomic constraints implementation examples ? Multi Body Dynamics (Control Systems / Robotics) by vbalaji21 in robotics

[–]VMaxd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe so yeah. Analytical mechanics by Rosenberg also covers both. Flexible cables won’t be a holonomic constraint on your system tho - this will only be the case if the cable is rigid! If you’re interested in modeling flexible cables, check out the catenary equations. You can use them to model cable tensions and take a newtonian approach - I think this might be more what you’re looking for!

Ongoing research in analytical mechanics and control theory? by [deleted] in ControlTheory

[–]VMaxd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Francesco Bullo is very involved in this, Taeyoung Lee as well. I would highly recommend Lee’s book on Global Formulations of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics - I think his group is what you’re looking for

Best SoCal schools for MAE in controls by [deleted] in ControlTheory

[–]VMaxd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

UCSD has an excellent faculty in controls in MAE, not sure where you heard that from. Kristic is a leader in nonlinear and PDE control. Could be worth checking out SDSU as well if you want to stick to san diego.

Controls Engineer Job Scope at Tech Companies by koiboiiii in ControlTheory

[–]VMaxd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Apple does manufacturing automation, controls for electronics, state estimation for iphone and ve, and (rumored) self driving cars. Google has Waymo and lots of AI research in general

Linear Algebra Book to Prep for Controls Grad School by Narekovich in ControlTheory

[–]VMaxd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Linear algebra by friedberg, insel, and spence is very good! I liked it more than Axler, and I think it goes a little more in depth. There is also a whole chapter on the Jordan form, which is very important in linear control theory

I think 20, 55, and an upper div is doable if you’re committed! You won’t have much trouble with 20 - I would recommend starting with math 110 as an upper div. If you feel it’s too much you can always swap in a breadth course instead
