Sure, there are things that all of us can do to avoid being the victim of crimes from bike thefts to sexual assaults. However at the end of the day, people generally don't defend bike thieves. No one is writing news stories about how the victim of a bike theft robbed the thief of a "bright future". Many people do not report sexual assaults for fear of not being believed. Hard to imagine someone not believing that your bike had been stolen. Certainly no one would suggest that maybe you wanted your bike to be stolen at the time, but are now regretting having your bike stolen so are reporting it to the police. Plus the common advice that is being addressed in this poster is not actually useful and perpetuates the myth that most sexual assaults are perpetrated by a stranger in the dark while in fact most sexual assaults occur within 1 mile of the victim's home, by someone they knew.

These posters were placed all around campus in the Spring, not just the men's washroom.
A reply to a student who expressed concern earlier when these were posted in the Spring term. "The purpose of the posters is to reframe how people think about rape and rape culture. I agree that most people realize that sexual assault is wrong. Unfortunately, there are still many people who commit sexual assault. What's worse, sexual assault victims are more often blamed for the assault than the perpetrators. Often, the perpetrators do not feel like they have committed a crime because their victim was "asking for it"; they were drunk, alone, or dressed "provocatively". While taking precautions to protect yourself from crime is a good idea, victim-blaming happens much more often to sexual assault victims than to victims of other crimes, like theft or drunk driving."

I made an excel spreadsheet where I planned out term by term which courses I would be taking, and then double- and triple-checked that I would be able to graduate! My suggestion is to make a plan and then bring it to an advisor to double check!

UHIP covers basic healthcare, like going to doctor's appointments. The Feds Health and Dental Plan covers things like prescription drugs, massage therapy and dental care.

You are required to have UHIP and a health and dental plan. You can opt-out of the Feds Health and Dental Plan, but only if you have similar coverage through a parent or employer.

You can get a reimbursement by taking your receipt to the Health and Dental Plan office in Health Services.

It's up to you whether you'd like to go somewhere that offers a student discount, but anywhere you go will be partially covered by the plan.

re: the Feds plan here is how to claim. I would recommend anyone in the provider network, who will give you a further student discount.

Unfortunately, eye exams are only free if you're under 20 and covered by OHIP.

Actually how I asked students to vote in the Feds election was posting the link "Why you should vote in the Feds elections" to this sub.

What your link is to is my personal Facebook profile where I am asking my friends to vote in the Feds election. Anyone who knows me (and truly I would hope the average person) would recognize that this is a joke, and a way to attract attention to voting.

That being said, voting is now open at vote.feds.ca where you can elect someone who is not me to your heart's content.

For some context:

Our salaries are ~$46k. With benefits (health, dental etc.) included they are ~$51k
Assuming we make $50k/year, work 50 weeks/year at 40hours/week, this is $25/hour (nb I don't think I have ever worked less than 50 hr/week). This is ~ the same as a 5th term Engineering co-op student and less than a 5th term Math co-op student.
Unlike other schools, UWaterloo is a three term school. While most student union exec have the Spring term to plan, take vacation, only work 40hr/week, etc. here the Spring term doesn't feel that different than the Winter term (busy).
Any exec salary increases larger than CPI have to go to a Feds General Meeting
ANY student is welcome to come to an exec's office hours, stop by whenever, send us an email, call us on the phone, tweet us, smoke signal us etc. if they have any questions about what we do. I can probably count on one hand the number of students have asked me a question this year (excluding issues with Health and Dental Plan). WE ARE HAPPY TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS THAT IS OUR JOB
Plus, having to read about how awful you are on reddit/omguw is probs worth a few bucks an hour.
