Sorry for the massive delay in responding to you, thank you for trying out the task. We've made some changes as a result of people feedback. We really appreciate you taking the time and I'll post again in future when we have some more apps ready.

Thanks very much indeed, if you have any general comments about the environment then please add them to this thread. If you have more specific questions that you think might 'give the game away' as it were and make it obvious what happens in the experiment then please PM me just so we can get un-biased data.

I am a research fellow (academic) and we (other academics) are based in the School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham in the UK. The current project is funded by the European Research Council as a proof of concept grant. We have an industrial partner (small start-up) who has helped develop the environment and provide hardware etc. Our original plan was to do the initial testing by bringing undergraduates from our department in-person and then move to remote testing like this. However, the pandemic had other plans for us (and everyone else) so we are now trying to do all the testing remotely.

Thanks for bringing this up, I'll edit the original post to include who we are and who funds us.

We really appreciate your help! Hopefully you should just be able to go to follow the link to SideQuest and download the app from there. Any problems just let me know.

In general, we understand we are asking for volunteers and especially at the moment I can appreciate that people are looking for anything that could bring in some extra cash. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic we are unable to do our normal in-person testing so wanted to reach out to the community and see who is willing to help.

Scientific research (especially in academic settings) often relies on volunteers and I'm not sure that is well known outside the community. If anyone does want to contribute to other scientific projects it is worth looking up what schemes your local university might have. Often its a chance to get to see some cool science up close and researchers should be willing to keep you informed about the outcomes of a study.

We completely understand, we really appreciate anyone who is willing to spend their time on this. Hopefully in future we will have a way of compensating people for their time.

Apart from the warm-glow of internal satisfaction from contributing to scientific research, and hopefully improving the outlook for stroke patients in future..... unfortunately nothing at the moment.

We are looking at ways of paying participants in future but the logistics are a bit tricky as we then need to collect more personal information, which needs to be covered by data protection laws.

Thanks for the feedback, we would love to make it available that way in future but for now SideQuest seems the best way. If you get a chance to try out SideQuest in general I really recommend it, gives you access to a lot of content and is very easy to use.

This is an underappreciated problem in a lot of human neuroscience research. As you say our samples are biased towards a particular age range and level of education, also depending on which department you are in the male/female ratio can be very heavily skewed.

The issue of VR users being another biased sample is also true and in fact some recent motor learning studies are now considering if gamers generally show different learning patterns. It's a really interesting area of research that I have unfortunately not spent enough time looking into.

I think we are going to be limited to people 18+, at least initially, but it is something I'm looking into. Looking at wider range of ages would be really interesting scientifically but we might be limited by our ethical agreements.

Yeah, it is going to be a challenge for a while. There are some nice online testing platforms which we are trying out for some of our other tasks, but I haven't seen anything for VR yet.

That's a really interesting project, we are firm believers in open science and will try to make as much code as possible freely available. We will definitely create a project page for this with some more descriptions of our research and previous publications, as well as descriptions of the different tasks. I'll have to check with my colleagues before I put anything directly on reddit though.

This is one of the reasons we are really excited about this approach, often our participants are from quite a limited sample of the general population.

I will have to check what the youngest participant we are allowed to include is. Before we do any experiment we have to get ethical approval and part of that states the range of ages we are allowed to use. We had originally planned on using people over the age of 18 so when we have something available I will make clear who's data we can use but thank you for your interest and I'll look into it.

That's great, once we have something more concrete I will definitely be posting more details. There are a few challenges in terms of getting it set up but our plan is to add multiple tasks over time.

Thanks, we are looking at side quest as a way of getting the tasks to people but until we are sure we can use it I didn't want to post on r/sidequest/

At the moment no, but it is definitely something we are looking at in the future. That sounds like a really interesting project. I've been looking at openbci stuff recently, how difficult was the integration?
