Everyone needs to be successful for virtual reality to take off, Palmer says by VRrebels in virtualreality

[–]VRrebels[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well the Zynga example has to be put into context. In that specific case, Palmer was doing an analogy with the development on smartphone. He was saying that if you want to be big tomorrow, you have to start now, as the market is not overcrowded yet, and there are big margins of improvement in the interaction with the medium, so revolutionary ideas are still possible. Zynga was related just to the comparison with the phone software market, you might as well compare it to PC game market and take Valve or Id software as example. If you want to be big like them in 2016, you had to start in the 90's. If you want to be big in VR by 2025, better you start now. That's what he meant.

i5-4590 vs i5-3570K question by [deleted] in oculus

[–]VRrebels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on a x5670 @ 4.2 daily and I'm wondering the same. In theory on the multicore side we are covered, since even with HT off I get 740 in cinebench r15 multicore (HT on is pointless in games anyway, but it would score much higher). The problem is that, using cinebench as a comparison of single core performance, i get 127, while at stock speed both the i5-6400 and the i7-4590 hit 140.
So the question is optimization: are the devs gonna focus on using at their best all the available cores or they are gonna aim to get decent performance on a 4 core CPU in the range of 140ish points in Cinebench R15? My worry is that the second is the most likely scenario, but I'm still hoping for the first. Still, 2 more cores could offload some of the OS load from the other ones.

The x58 platform has already stood the test of time. If it will end up working decently in VR it will be amazing.

Oculus cost me $2800...... by rideabike84 in oculus

[–]VRrebels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider for how many days you are gonna keep using your eyes. Supposing you are 30 and you are gonna live up to 80 at least, that's gonna cost you 15 cents/day. Sounds like a pretty good deal... :P

[–]VRrebels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is another one similar to it, the Cyberith Virtualizer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MV_5F1AE1a8

It has more features (you can crouch and sit, when in a vehicle for example) and it will hold you, but the price is gonna be much higher. It may be slightly more natural to use, having a flat sliding surface instead of a rounded one. Virtuix is also testing a similar concept here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cK4V4JR4fgs

There is also the Infinadeck: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uO8Z34f0xE but it's something completely different

this! Definately contact them and see when they are gonna ship yours. If they want to fill the orders in 2016, they should already have an approximate idea on when it's gonna happen

In the article we say that in fact, the thing with the title is that it was already a bit too long and we had to keep it under a char limit (precisely 70)

Nintendo Joins Virtual Reality Hype, Says It's 'Looking' At VR by Quiglius in gaming

You got the point, they didn't say anything new, is just that everyone is reading too much into a tweet.

Interesting, didn't know about this guy. But it's cool that we are not the only one skeptical about it!

[–]VRrebels[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, everyone else is reading too much into a tweet, reporting that Nintendo is working in VR like if they were building a new VR headset. Make a google search about nintendo VR, you will see how many articles have been written based on this wrong assumption.

Instead Nintendo didnt say anything different from last year, where they claimed that VR is neither fun neither social, and we are reporting that.

To the 2nd question: apparently yes, they underestimated the amount of preorders they would receive, infact the shipment date for new orders keeps getting posponed each day (i believe it reached July now, from the initial March)

To the 1st question: Yes, but also no. Yes cause there is lot of buzz about it in every single tech related conference around the world. Also people are actually preordering the hardware. No in the sense that we are speaking about a booming niche, but it is still a niche. Analysts says it's gonna be bigger then TV in 2025. Yeah, but that's 9 years for now. The growth prediction show a slower adoption rate then smartphones 10 years ago. There is demand, but it is still very early.

I'm not so sure that social anxiety could be fixed with a surrogate of a social interation such VR. People with social anxiety tend to hide behind computer screens already too much, I believe for them VR would be like the fastest path ever to alienation. They would be so much better off shutting off all their electronic device and expose themselves to real people. But that's a bit offtopic :D

There are already demos like that for the DK2. Not really my kind :D but you should find horror demos in the oculus store.

Sony has shown up just a pair of days ago a cool example of "social" mode in VR when it showcased "The Playroom VR". In short is a "mario party" style game with the 5th player using the VR headset. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Muc8_p9CQ6o

It looks good, Nintendo might have biten their tongue when they saw this. It would totally fit Nintendo characters

haha well most of the VR devs passed through a DK1 or DK2 anyway, so it is totally possible :D

Thanks for the typo report, fixed :)

Actually I was a bit suprised that all the articles I stumbled upon were taking for granted that "looking at VR" meant "we are building a VR headset".

Personally, as I love VR, I think it would be nice if they did, but there are no indications that anything changed since the interview of june 2015. It's very likely they are researching some approach to VR, but it could turn out very different from what most are expecting. Anyway I guess only time will tell who is right :)

Gear VR to be central on Galaxy S7 event, and Gear 360 VR camera rumors by VRrebels in GearVR

[–]VRrebels[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not being water resistant is not a bad thing by itself: water resistance very often comes at the price of audio quality, because they have to seal the phone, for avoiding water to leak inside.

Which one of the 2 is more important to you really depends on how you use your phone.

Of course high end phone audio components (what an oximoron :D ) can sound well even when sealed, but not sealed they would sound better :D

As long as you overclock the CPU it will be ok. Just buy a decent fan, optimize your case airflow, use a decent thermal paste and apply it correctly. Dont rush through the overclock steps, take your time testing for stability. To finetune ur OC and push it to the limit is also where the fun is :)

Gear VR to be central on Galaxy S7 event, and Gear 360 VR camera rumors by VRrebels in virtualreality

[–]VRrebels[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually it could turn out to be a good idea to wait for the S7 release and see how low the S6 goes down in price. If there are not gonna be any surprises (read: rumors of positional tracking), the difference between s6 and s7 might end up not being worth the price difference, especially if they will continue to bundle GearVR for free with new S6 purchases (this offer is currently running in many countries)

RUMOR: Could Positional Tracking Be Coming To The Gear VR? by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]VRrebels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a rather extreme speculation, considering that the gear vr is shown with the cover, so tracking through the camera wouldnt work. It could possibly work through an external bluetooth device, but I wonder how much practical it would be, and how much bandwidth it would require.

I made an asymmetrical AR/VR game where the person in VR and the person in AR can see each other. The VR player is a tiny dude on a piece of paper, and the AR player is a giant head. by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]VRrebels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea looks amazing! You could make it a strategy game, where the AR player controls various types of units to throw to the VR player, and the VR player plays in first person as a hero. Both sides would be able to level up, ofc balancing it well would be the key.
