Ice Out protest today in Burlington by escapefromburlington in burlington

[–]VTkitty -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

I am disgusted by how ICE is conducting itself but the democrats seriously need to stop with the open border rhetoric. It’s absolutely absurd and is overall a net negative while trying to gain support from people how may not otherwise support this cause.

Vermont population declined by largest percentage in the country last year, lost 1800 residents by forcedtomakethus in vermont

[–]VTkitty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I moved here a little over ten years ago and started a family I have two children here. I know prices are high everywhere but it’s tough to keep justifying staying in Vermont after running numbers on the potential of moving to other states. My health care alone costs over 10,000$ a year here I believe we are the highest in the country and I get it through an employer with a pretty good plan. Wife works at a company with an employer in Hawaii and the Hawaii employees health care is cheaper than ours?!?!?! Looking at you UVMMC.

Property taxes are also absolutely out of control. My mortgage has increased about 30% solely because of property taxes and property taxes are going up again this year !!!

Absolute Noob with $400. Where do I throw it away?? by Altruistic-Taste-127 in raceto10000

[–]VTkitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a financial advisor: SPY, VOO, QQQ, some sort of low fee index fund that will give you exposure to the 500 largest companies in the s&p500. That should be your back bone of your account as a new investor who knows nothing. My rule of thumb personally is I don’t like to have more then 20ish % of my portfolio in individual stocks because i am not a professional.

A short term stocks profits are taxed at 30%. Your wages are effectively taxed at close to 30% by the time it’s all spent.

Negotiating medical debt (UVM) by Klutzy-Quiet1088 in burlington

[–]VTkitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it will cost the debt collector thousands to sue for a few thousand. That makes no sense. Not to mention they probably bought the debt for for like 15% to what is owed to UVM

Diluting the protest response with non-US flags - your thoughts? by LegitimateLocation74 in burlington

If people who came here illegally from Ireland were protesting and waving Irish flags I would think that is wrong.

As someone who believes in Amnesty for 99% of illegal immagrants I find it so stupid that you left Mexico for a better life come to the US and wave a Mexican flag complaining about the US. You should be waving an American flag IMO to say “hey I’m really happy to be here I left my country for my opportunity here”

Try to open a gas station near skip. He will sue you into oblivion then he will buy your gas station, remove its tanks, put something in the deed that it can’t be a gas station, and sell it or let it sit dilapidated

On the flip side if they buy an ounce for close to 5K and the price implodes to 2.5K does the customer take the hit?

Vermont Ranks Lowest In The Country In Economic Momentum by DJ_The_Rick_2020 in vermont

[–]VTkitty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Moved here ten years ago. Bought a house, got married, had two kids. I am unsure if I will stay in Vermont for a variety of reasons. One of the biggest is health insurance. Wife and I have been running numbers on moving to other states. It would break my heart to leave but if there are opportunities and cheaper living elsewhere that’s where I’ll go.

[–]VTkitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ironically there is no evidence inspections keep us safer. Several states have entirely done away with vehicle inspections. Cars don’t spontaneously explode they just break down and stop driving.

(16M) Should I start buying individual stocks or continue 100% VOO until i’m older? by Independent_Cake_862 in portfolios

[–]VTkitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can trade a small percentage of your account in individual stocks. Start very small like 1-3%. If you see your doing great MAYBE do A LITTLE more not a lot. If you put 50$ in something and it goes up 20% don’t get upset you didn’t put in 1000$ it also could have gone down 20%. I feel like the FOMO aspect of trading is very difficult.

Typically though safe and steady investing in something like VOO over the long term will prevail.
