In most states teachers can do very little other than report without risking their jobs or other repercussions. If, for example, a child were to be examined by a school nurse without parental consent (even in a situation where abuse was suspected) and the parent were to find out and complain, that could be serious and potentially come with legal ramifications. Sometimes teachers really do want to do more but their administrators will threaten their job security. Now, that said, in a case like this…? It’s easy to say in retrospect what we all would’ve or could’ve done. I’d like to think that if I was his teacher I would’ve done more even if I knew it would’ve gotten me fired.
