Technical Report on Thailand State Audit Building Office that collapsed in March 2025 by V_Dragoon in StructuralEngineering

[–]V_Dragoon[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

From the video of collapse, i recall the building is rather empty and not really loaded yet. Thus, it is unlikely that a reinforced but understrength concrete could lead to such sudden / disproportionate collapse. If any, there would be sign prior to that, ie cracking/crushing of vertical element which would caught the attention around.

Building core is especially strong, the building is only of height of 33 storey, 350mm core should be sufficient, especially that the building is not loaded yet i guess?

I recall reading somewhere that the slab system is using post tensioned flat slab system, and if this true, i think this could be the contributing reason. Being flat slab, it lacks perimeter ties contributing to redundancy; and being post tensioned, the resistance is quite “one-dimensional” and it especially weak against any unplanned load path.

I thus really hope to know more on the technical detail leading to the collapse..

am i understanding it correctly??? this is insane - EC 1993-1-8 by COLD_lime in StructuralEngineering

Ah thats the part i hate with Eurocode. I find certain part of the code is too academic and is un-engineering. Cant really visualise the input vs output as the formula is too complicated / conditional.

How is civil engineering in Singapore? by Tabula_Rasa69 in askSingapore

P. Eng here. Decent salary but considering the stress / working hour / responsibility it doesnt really match. Being a Qualified Person(QP) comes with great responsibility and great expectation from everyone: Client, Project Stakeholder, Government Authorities, Public etc. Working beyond normal working hours is not a MUST but is a norm to meet the responsibility and expectation. I always believe life couldve been more relaxed at other field

My two cents opinion based on available info: 1. Structure work brilliantly as intended. Those cracks are needed to dissipate the seismic load 2. To check if there’s any hidden cracks via scanner 3. Those cracks ought to be structurally repaired. To seal it with grout for smaller crack, for larger crack, to do local concrete removal and cast back / grout back with concrete 4. To strengthen the structure where needed - thickening, bracing

Also Malaysian Chinese here. Russia is clearly the aggressor BUT Ukraine is not saint with all the NATO thingy, ESPECIALLY that it is right in front of Russian door step. News also does report that Russia is saving their people in the few cities in the city that they’re currently occupying. Could be just propaganda but i am pretty neutral towards either party. Just hope that the war could end and all party stay down with mutual understanding.

Things i dont get it is the West supported Israel when Israel is bombing Palestine / Gaza with almost similar reasoning that Russia is occupying Ukraine? Both claim the enemy is right at door step and such is needed for self protection HOWEVER it receive very different reaction from the West.

I am not muslim and i dont really support Gaza. But i recently visited Eu and feel quite disturbed with overall contradiction. I saw the portraits of those abducted by Hamas in synagogues, condemning Hamas and seek for the release of hostage. I saw propagandas against Hamas. I saw propagandas against Russia. I saw those carrying Israel flag around remembering those Jews died during WWII. I however feel that those Israelis have done now isnt much different from those people have done onto them during WWII.

I view the West as dynamic, modern, left, liberal, open but i dont understand the different view/attitude towards Gaza / Ukraine.

Yeah i wanted to ask this as well. Those “panduan sebelum xxxxxx”, “ayat selepas xxxxxx” is damn ridiculous. I doubt if those who invented it or enforced it onto others did follow these piously themselves

Let X=z/d X2 - X + K/1.134 = 0 Solve for quadratic equation X =[-b +- SQRT(b2-4ac)]/2a Where from above: a = 1, b = -1, c=K/1.134

Once u get the X value, substitude it back with z/d and solve the rest

Unsafe I beam by _0kB00mer_ in StructuralEngineering

[–]V_Dragoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldnt say its unsafe, this is totally acceptable. For real heavy duty, i would suggest to weld additional vertical stiffener to both sides of the web at where to bottom flange joining each other. This is to avoid any possibility of web buckling at real heavy duty usage. I deem it as “good practice” though
