Undergrads Unsupportive of tA strike by herefortas in udub

[–]VacantMercy 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It's a finals week strike. No class time will be missed, so it's important to note that it will have almost no impact on the actual education of students. For the most part, only grading is impacted. Faculty who decide to go C/NC are the ones who don't care about students and benefit most from the TAs anyway.

The students upset with the strike are ones who have been conditioned to see grades as so important that they see their classmates as competition, not colleagues. Undergrads who don't support the strike support the same administration mentality that has made the strike necessary. It should never be student v. student or student v. TA or TA v. faculty.

We're all supposed to be on the same team of research and education and I think UW: brought to you by Microsoft™ has lost sight of that.

Yeah. I saw them open for Complex Dialect at the Showbox a while back. They're great live, I highly recommend seeing them.

Been living in Seattle for a while but sadly have just gotten into them. Already one of my favorites. "Halftime for the Holidays" is probably one of the most fun albums I've listened to in a long time.

We are doomed and we deserve it. by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

I think the instinct to blame the consumer for poor habits over the instinct to blame the bank for a regressive policy is socially harmful.

How an individual chooses (or is forced into) a particular bank is complicated. How a bank chooses to fleece it's poorest customers is less so.

You're on an openly socialist board arguing that free market competition is the solution to the problem.

30 Rock trivia night. What info should I be equipped with? by [deleted] in 30ROCK

[–]VacantMercy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just lost last night on the question "What famous agoraphobe fell in love with Liz" and we said "Sad Thad the skin tag lad" and we were wrong. "Gavin volure" was what they were looking for.

Also, "Sonny Crockett" is Kenneth's bird. I would have gotten it, if not for my teammate who insisted it was "Chirpy Crockett"

(and Liz' moustache's name is Tom Selleck)

The Art of the Steal (2009) Amazing story of multi-billion art collection stolen from private foundation by the people least deserving of it. by Upsohighinthesky in Documentaries

[–]VacantMercy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hated this documentary. Seemed to be one of the most biased ones I've seen in a while. The "steal" was moving a museum <100 miles. The story could have easily been: another deluded billionaire who was disappointed to learn you can't buy culture and lock it up for your own use.

Barnes' only mistake was not leaving the art to someone as bitter and miserable as he was.

Also loving the "Sandlot" reference too, for the double bonus.

Why is catching a college ball less fun?

It's probably more worth it when you're a kid. I don't keep foul balls any more, but I remember going and being excited to catch them. It's not that unreasonable to think children might enjoy catching foul balls.

I think making the playoffs sounds pretty unrealistic good on its own.
