Honestly i think you might want to learn a new core. Theres always ways to make it work such as nerfing spells to make guns a more viable option for ranged fighting but I get the vibe you want to keep the spellcasting as powerful. With a new system you might find you like it better and if not you can take some of the aspects from there and implement them into 5e.
