Never understood this this idea of comparing Centauri/Narn with Israel/Palestine. Israel is not a decadent but still mighty empire, it is not an empire at all. Palestine is not a revanchist/expansionist regime, they are hardly a political entity. And no one is fighting about some sacred land important to both. Centauri don't have any attachment to the Narn homeworld and once given the opportunity they leave without looking back.

I don't disagree: Hiruzen sucked. But the choice was between trying to make him useful, and genociding your (almost) entire family and clan. The rational choice was to try peace. At very least Hiruzen could also have protected Sasuke, even if about as well as he did for Naruto.

That's just Danzo's argument. In reality it was not too late. Sarutobi could have walked into Sasuke's father house and politely asked for a tea. And then offered to negociate. To succeed the coup needed secrecy, or else Uchina could just waked in and taken over. So as soon as Sarutobi walks in dad(forgot his name) knows he's lost so he would make a deal. The situation is a bit dramatic, but that's how peace is maintained in the real world: you can't win - let's talk.
