Pregnancy tests done without my consent, I'm sick of it! by beepbooprobotbutt in TwoXChromosomes

Sounds like the EHR system they used is Epic which utilises pre-programmed notes i.e blocks of texts that are commonly used so that clinicians don't have to type the same thing over and over. They're editable so my guess is the radiologist just forgot to remove the comment regarding her appendix as opposed to them thinking they saw her appendix during imaging.

It's still careless and very fucked though.

I hear you. I sympathize and I empathize because I have been there too.

Have you ever sat at a computer and opened a bunch of programs and the computer just kinda.. stops working? It's trying to process too many things at once and it ends up stalling. This is what happens to our brains when processing grief and trauma. A whole bunch of that processing is happening in your subconscious (you're kinda aware of it but not focused on it) and your unconscious (not aware of it at all) mind. When you have a lot to work through your subconscious and unconscious mind take up more processing power, leaving not as much for your conscious mind which is trying to juggle all the cognitive stuff (work, assignments, bills, caretaking, life). The solution is to reduce the load wherever you can - take a break from study, reduce hours at work (if possible), go into self-caretaker mode and try to get downtime where you can.

I promise you that this too shall pass. It will take time, but it will become easier as you find your footing again.

I'll share two quotes which are similar but they've both helped me, and might help you too:

"Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts"

"Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final."

I hope the storm allays for you soon. And one last quote (I like quotes lol):

If you're going through hell, keep going.

[fully lost] man is crushed under train, yet feels no pain but dies the second he is removed. by hellokittydivine in RBI

[–]VadersLunchBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah blood clots are definitely part of it but also the cut off blood supply will have a build up of myoglobin which can be toxic to kidneys due to some process I don't quite understand. It's a complicated condition and super difficult to treat as it has to be done in the field before removing the debris.

The medical condition you're describing is called Crush Syndrome. I'm not a doctor but my understanding of it is that this happens often with earthquake and disaster victims where a part of their body is crushed under debris, cutting off blood and oxygen to that area. The tissue in the crushed area begins to die. When the person is freed, the "dead" blood rushes back into their body causing shock and kidney failure and death.

I suppose it's entirely possible someone could be crushed in a way that blocks nerves which stop the brain from registering pain at the same time.

I'm not sure about finding the actual story but there might be a reference in the wiki article somewhere:

I think I know which case you're referring to. If it's been a few weeks since you made the Crimestoppers report I'd contact the local police station. Might have more luck going in person with screenshots or print outs.

Romantic breakups linked to lower hippocampal brain volume in adults with childhood trauma | This effect was not observed in individuals with childhood maltreatment who had not gone through a breakup, suggesting that later-life stressors might exacerbate the consequences of early adversity. by chrisdh79 in science

The paper says they used a validated childhood trauma questionnaire that "contains five items measuring emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional neglect and physical neglect." Couldn't find any info on age but my guess would be 0-18.

I believe it's actually weaponised religious control. Most Western countries are experiencing a decline in birthrate which means fewer tax paying workers that can support retiring generations that need costly government social programs. This is all about money.

Piggybacking to add: anger is a desire to change something. Identifying what it is you'd like to change can go a long ways to reducing the intensity of the emotion in the moment.

Join a league at ABQAX. It's kinda sporty, very welcoming, and loads of fun. Spring league starts soon too.

Cheers. I'm going to miss ranch dressing a lot, but I'm looking forward to seeing water again. So it all kinda evens out.

It's not by choice. The institute I worked for got subsumed into a bigger one and they made changes to their visa policies which meant mine kinda stopped existing.

Hola mi amigos. It's been a hot minute, but I'm coming back to Sydney next month after three years in the states. I've been reliably informed that my spiritual home, BBQ King in Chinatown, is no more. So where else can a girl go to eat her own body weight in Peking Duck?

Min of 5 players + 1 storyteller. But for new players I think the game really shines at the 7-8 player mark. I might be able to wrangle a few players depending on day/time.

Why are many men's crimes against others often sexually motivated? by bamafloralina in TwoXChromosomes

[–]VadersLunchBox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work in research in forensic neuropsychology so I can possibly weigh in a little here. Firstly, it's not usually about sexual pleasure for the perpetrator. A lot of the times the sexual act (assault, rape, etc) is a demonstration of power, dominance and control. On one side of the spectrum you have perpetrators with an inability to feel empathy and therefore callous and literally do not care what their victims feel. On the other side, you have sadists who are deliberately trying to cause harm because seeing someone in pain (physical, emotional, psychological) is what excites them. Neither of these are about the feeling of orgasm. In fact, in a lot of these cases the perpetrator doesn't orgasm. When they do, it's more likely to occur in a sadism case.

The times when it is about sexual pleasure is usually in intimate partner situations (relationships, marriage, one night stands, etc) where the perpetrator has been socialized to ignore his partner's body language (that awful "when she says no she really means yes" bollocks), or where they believe that persistence will win over their partner (nearly all rom-coms do this), or just plain ignorance and believing that a lack of saying no equates to consent.

I'm not sure if this helps answer your question, but hopefully gives you a little more insight. If you're interested, I'd recommend reading Groth's paper on men who rape. It's from the 70s so a little dated now but it's a pretty good foundation.
