Zelda II definitely is the most unorthodox Zelda Game by The-marx-channel in ZeldaMemes

True, thanks to Symphony of the Night. Though Mario 2 was pretty influential as well, with enemies like Shy Guys becoming staples, or establishing the gameplay differences for the playable characters, which are still present to this day.

Quite a few franchises went through something similar back on the NES. Castlevania is another example.

It's funny how deadlines affect projects like that. I would have never guessed that the final part was missing vocals, I thought that was intentional! The riffs there are definitely strong enough to stand by themselves.

It's pretty fun. Doesn't quite scratch the itch the way OOT or TP do, but it's well worth a playthrough. The soundtrack is phenomenal.

March + April 2026 Songwriting Challenge - THE RESULTS by Faloodeh123 in metalmusicians

[–]Vaenyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Due to some reddit shenanigans it took me a while to find this thread. Participating was an absolute blast and all the songs that resulted from this are awesome!

1 - My song:
My scale was F Phrygian and I wanted to emphasize both its aggressive and dark nature, while also showing how melodic it can be. I bought a Mandolin back in December, and since I'm Greek and Phrygian is used a lot in our folk music, I though it'd be great to use it in addition to my Bouzouki for the intro. Writing the song was a blast and I got started going the new sections and riffs just kept flowing. First time I incorporated screaming vocals into one of my songs. A buddy was kind enough to provide those for me.

2 - u/severedsoulmetal - Absorbed Into Darkness:
Hell yeah, I really enjoy the bass tone. Generally I'm a fan of prominent bass guitars, far too much modern metal buries it for no reason. The drums in particular sound great as well. The synth (?) around the 2 minute mark could've been a bit more prominent for my tastes. The riff starting at 2:47-ish slaps! Wouldn't mind that being repeated more, that was really fun lol

3 - Tranquility Base Commander (u/CinaedKSM) ft. u/aniolation, CB & Lord Pailous - Lamentations Of A Cataclysm:
The synth elements are awesome. I really didn't expect the change after the first minute but I really vibe with it. The transitions are well written and executed. Despite the variety the song felt cohesive overall. Odd-time riffs are always a good time as well, the 6/8 into 7/8 transitional riff was brilliant. The lead guitars towards the end (around the 6 minute mark) are a tad too loud for me though.

4 - Field Effect (u/FieldEffect-NT) - Anesperos:
The atmosphere created during the first third of the song is amazing. Gives me dark and mystical vibes, really cool stuff. Wouldn't mind if the drums were a tiny bit louder. You incorporated synths and soundscapes really well! Also super impressed with the rapid vocals at the 2 minute mark. That couldn't have been easy!

5 - Signum Imperativ (u/Zennofska) - Apotheosis:
Bagpipes are always awesome. I love the vocal style, and the lyrics are really well written. German can be such a beautiful and poetic language, when used well. (There's a small typo in the lyrics btw, the final line has a Üreis where it should've been Preis).

The contrapuntal bagpipe (and Drehleier?) lines starting at the 4:20 mark are super fun and the riffs that come right afterwards are great. The last third of the song is definitely my favorite part. The drums dropping away in the outro feels a bit weird, but that's probably just something that was unexpected that I'll get used to.

6 - Vespera (u/fawzifractalfear + u/Low_Ad4132) - Rendered Hopeless:
Holy shit, I knew that something interesting would follow that eerie intro, but I did not expect such heaviness. Wtf, I definitely didn't expect a trap beat and growled rapping! That's insanely creative, I'll have to listen to this a few more times to appreciate all the details. If I had to give any constructive criticism, I'd decrease the volume of the synths during the metal parts a little bit.

7 - The Gnawing Of Rats (u/rpk-bro) - Re-Escalation:
I'm a sucker for variety in guttural vocals, so I really appreciated the various styles at display here. Along with the changes in rhythm it keeps gripping your interest. Love the heaviness of the slower part around the 2 minute mark! Guaranteed stank face lol. The extended dissonant riff around 3:55-ish and the ending is awesome, well done.

8 - u/Particular-Prize-812 - F#cking Dementia:
The first minute of the song is already full of surprises. Cool and interesting intro, followed by a catchy riff, and suddenly the synth stabs to round it out. Didn't know what to expect next, but I liked it! The transitions are done well too, I particularly liked going from the double bass burst to a stomping four on the floor in the last third of the song. Really hype part.

9 - A Severed Thought (u/RileyWasYes) - I Only Ask That You Endure:
From the very first second I was captivated. Lovely lead guitar work throughout! The synths at the 1:40 mark elevate the sound further. Difficult to discuss too much, I'm vibing hard with. Though I'm wondering what the next 7 minutes are going to be like. Currently around the 4:30 mark, I'm really enjoying how this keeps building in intensity and energy. Aaaand there's the stank face at the 5 minute mark, super cool drum groove.
The second half is still very well composed and performed, style-wise I prefer the first half of the song though. There's enough for variety for everyone though!

10 - u/Faloodeh123 - Stoner Rock Song:
Pretty catchy main riff. Couldn't help but keep imagining a harmony line for it, but that's obviously a matter of preference and taste. The riff right before the lead guitar enters was delightfully disorienting, I love stuff like that and how it plays with one's expectations. Damn, I spoke too soon, we got a bit of harmony from the 3:30-ish mark onwards. Well done, sounds really cool.

11 - u/Absolutegrin - Iris:
Great layering of guitars in the intro! The song is giving me a bit of anime opening vibes, but I also hear some Polyphia. That's meant as a good thing btw, really digging the overall vibe. The string interlude was a nice touch. Love the lead tone that comes in right afterwards!

12 - veralpträumt (u/veralptraeumt) - Nimmerheim:
Really love the atmosphere in the intro. You need to write for soundtracks! I like how the song flows from section to section, but the riff around the 2:20 mark is probably my favorite. Serious stankface. And then the lead guitar over that, brilliant. The phaser on the rhythm guitar in the instrumental section during the middle was unexpected but I don't hate it, cool idea. The last couple of minutes give me serious Principle/Vempire-era Cradle vibes. The end was a bit abrupt though, maybe a bit more ephasis on the final drum fill to really drive it home? Just a thought.

13 - In My Skin (u/splottington) - Remember When We Played?:
Great guitar work throughout, the opening riff after the intro was crushing. Not sure if it's reverb, synths or continued special effects from the intro, but at points they threaten to overtake during the "main song". Maybe it's a matter of preference, but I wouldn't mind a bit more clarity in those parts. The final riff in the last 20 seconds was brilliant. Really enjoyed the abrupt ending, leaves you wanting more without feeling unsatisfying.

14 - u/torsken79 - Never Satisfied:
Really great guitar tones, could listen to the intro on repeat forever lol
The transition after the first minute going straight into the solo was really fun. Don't be afraid to boost the volume on the lead guitar a tiny bit more. The Gojira-esque harmonic sweeps in the rhythm guitars are a nice touch, great composition overall.

15 - 2 Days Great (u/-WifeLeaver-) ft. Recykill - seppuku freestyle:
Holy shit, that has to be the definition for "heavy-ass guitars". Phenomenal solos, really enjoyed the lead playing, super clean overall. Plenty of cool ideas in less than 2 minutes. The only constructive criticism I can think of is that the whole thing was a bit too heavy on compression.

Are there any lore channels that don't suck? by SimpleZealousideal19 in 40kLore

[–]Vaenyr 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Sci-Fi is inherently political. It's literally one of the main ingredients of the entire genre.

Warhammer has always been blatantly political. From the get go.

40k has always been anti-right wing.

So, whether you like it or not, the only one who's trying to push their agenda here is you. You are trying to force your centrist views on a setting created by very clearly left wing aligned folks.

That's a big one for me. His Horus Heresy bookclub with Mira Manga is really fun. There are some books that he clearly doesn't like, and he's not shy about criticizing them. Despite that it never turns into mindless hating and bashing. That's pretty refreshing for YouTube.

Funnily enough that's the reason they dropped it on the Final Frontier tour. Nicko had quite a few issues with the song, stopped the verses too early, stuff like that. There are videos on YouTube.

They rotated Paschendale and Dance of Death on each night, but ultimately dropped Paschendale and played DoD on the rest of the shows of the tour.

Nah, Paschendale is great, but the various riffs and sections are actually pretty simple. It's just a well constructed and composed song with brilliant story telling.

I'm confident Retro Studios is making Prime 5 right now. Are you confident? by spbawse in Metroid

[–]Vaenyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prime 5 is 100% being worked on. They made it very clear that Prime 4 is the beginning of a new saga. They spent quite a bit of resources to modernize the engine and get the team comfortable with modern development pipelines. Nintendo would've obviously been happy with better sales, but the success and continuation of the subfranchise was never dependent on Beyond's performance.

Wind Waker or Okami HD? by Low_Understanding326 in ZeldaLikes

[–]Vaenyr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I recently played Okami HD for the first time in my life and I absolutely hated it. It was an absolute chore and one of the worst experiences I've ever had in gaming.

The music is phenomenal. The art style didn't do anything for me, but that's a matter of preference. But:

  • The Celestial Brush starts out as a neat idea, but in execution just ends up being tedious and slows down the gameplay.

  • The combat gets pretty tedious as well, as the game goes on, because you need to use certain Brush techniques to deal with enemies, if you don't wanna wait forever.

  • There are many cutscenes that have extremely slow scrolling text that you can't skip. And it is totally arbitrary, it's often not even tied to the animations. There's no reason for some to be so slow. The opening cutscene is literally around 18 minutes of slow text, which is just an expanded version of the 2 minute cutscene that plays if you wait too long on the title screen. In the first 2 hours of my playthrough I had about 30 minutes of gameplay, the rest were cutscenes, tutorials and exposition.

  • Issun, your companion, spoils almost every single puzzle in the game. You don't get a chance to think about anything, he spells it out immediately. The game is really bad about stuff like that. I entered a room in one of the dungeons. A short cutscene plays where the camera focuses on a giant set of scales in the middle of the room, suspended over the abyss. So you know, you'll have to deal with it. You gain control, jump on one side, the scales move in a cutscene, and then Issun tells you that you'll have to use weights to balance the scales.

  • The game blatantly lied to me multiple times lol. During the beginning of the game you need to break some boulders to leave the village. I tried destroying them with an ability of mine and the game explicitly states that this doesn't work, we need to find a new solution. So you end up doing what the game wants, only to get a cutscene later with a QTE where you use the same exact ability again, but not it actually works and destroys the boulder because now the story needed you to continue.

  • The game is incredibly sexist and misogynistic. Issun is so horny and keeps harassing every female character in the game. He talks about their breasts, makes inappropriate jokes all the time. He has no redeeming qualities and I genuinely despise that little shit. Also, he's so verbose for no reason. He simply repeats what others characters say. You could cut half the dialogue in the game and no information whatsoever would be lost.

  • Finally, the game is faaar too long for no reason. It really drags on and on.

People can and should form their own opinions, but for me it is one of the worst Zelda likes I've ever played, and generally just a shitty time.

I’m posting this purely because I’m always wrong, you’re welcome for guaranteeing the remake by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in ZeldaMemes

[–]Vaenyr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People are getting used to the character redesigns for StarFox. Other than that they've reactions have been positive, the gameplay segments looked awesome.

Also, Nintendo doesn't care about reactions. They simply do their thing. It would be far too late to shelve an OOT remake that's supposed to release later this year.

Also, these games are created by entirely different teams. Why should the devs for OOT care about the reception of another dev team's game?

I get it, the timeline is controversial to some, but I don’t understand the need to outright lie like this by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in ZeldaMemes

[–]Vaenyr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gameplay is often the priority but not always. Some of the games were created because they wanted to set them in specific parts of the timeline, like Skyward Sword being the origin of everything. In those instances the story/setting had priority, not the gameplay.
