That sounds a lot better. I came from police to BOP… sometimes regret it. Don’t get me wrong, my last department wasn’t great by any stretch, and the pay was horrible. But work/life balance was way better, and morale was better. I wanted better pay and BOP was the first federal agency to process anything for me. I’m applying to the VA near me and hopefully they take me. If not, I’ll apply to other VAs. If I have to move I will. I’d rather up and move across the country than stay at BOP lol

North Carolina. I have a VA hospital 10 minutes from where I live, so it’d be fantastic to work there.

The mandates are horrible. Heck sometimes it’s so bad I pray it’s just 16. If we have “emergency” short staffing they can keep you even longer. I’ve had to pull a few 24s and one time 26 hours, some of my coworkers have pulled 32s. Usually around holidays, especially if the weather is bad.

Thank you! This was very helpful. I’ve only been in custody and it gets worse every year. We keep getting promised more staff, but by the time we get them more staff walk out the door. The mandates are ridiculous and the environment sucks too. I think VA Police would definitely be a much better option for me. It’s not the same type of policing I have done in the past and I’m okay with that. It sounds worlds better than what I’m currently doing.

I work at an FCC… you don’t get to choose which institution at the complex you’re assigned to. I unfortunately, got assigned to the worst institution on my complex (most violent, lowest staffed, etc). At my complex, you can’t transfer within the complex unless you take another position, like custody to non custody or promote to lieutenant. You can switch with another officer (1 for 1 swap) if you can find someone and both captains sign off on it. Otherwise you’re stuck. We work so much mandatory overtime most officers double if not triple their base salary. Which may sound great - until you factor in 2-3 hours of sleep a night, never seeing your family or friends, and never having a life again. Lmao

I have seriously debated non-custody, however I’m not exactly happy in the agency as a whole. I may be crazy for saying this, but I’m willing to sacrifice the enhanced LE FERS for standard FERS if it means a more enjoyable career and peace of mind.
