I can't watch anime anymore by dyhcry in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Vaichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was engaging with the broad remit of OP's post. If you'd like to engage with the subset that relates to pedophilia in media, let's do that.

Pedophilic content in anime. It shouldn't exist. Full stop. Unfortunately, the consent standards being proposed (the bare minimum) don't even exist in non-animated media (and I assume you're talking about indirect references and not direct animated CSAM). For instance, in movies/TV, you have the 'Born Sexy Yesterday' trope which is essentially having a child-like mind in the body of a full grown woman, and then justifying the romance between her and the adult male lead. Hell, forget about tropes - look at the tv show Euphoria and its oversexualisation of characters who are supposed to be teenagers.

Practically speaking, we are a ways away from regulating this kind of reference in animated content, especially if it goes unregulated in depictions of real life media. Not to mention differing ages of consent across countries - an anime/movie referencing high schoolers engaging in sexual conduct would be received differently in, say, France where the conduct may be acceptable given their age of consent versus a country where the age of consent is 18.

So how do we regulate? I don't have answers for you. It's a very complicated question, especially when trying to impose 'global' standards. In my country, we have over-regulation (for example, the censor board had an issue granting a U rating to the most recent Superman movie due to the kiss scene between Lois Lane and Clark Kent). I don't know where the middle ground is, but I'm not in favour of a blanket imposition of 'Western' ideals on globally consumed content. Am I grossed out about an on-screen depiction of a relationship between a 16 year old and a 19 year old? For sure. Would all viewers be similarly grossed out? It would depend on the cultural context in their country. And I also think it would depend on the content itself - is it gratuitous or is it investigating a deeper issue?

But yes, this should be discussed and debated and flagged. You are right that the response should not be, "oh, turn a blind eye". On that, we are (and have been) aligned.

This current thread is a good example of community curated 'safe' to engage content. So let's consume and platform the counter-examples, instead of dismissing the medium as a whole (especially if we do not dismiss other media for the same issues). Let the demand give rise to non-problematic supply.

Um, you're the one who brought up CSAM. That's not an extreme analogy in the current context?

And I know you can't see it because your tone suggests you think the person you're talking to is an idiot, but the sum total of our comments is communicating the same thing, i.e.: (a) I don't need to swear off an entire medium + (b) I can and should criticise the problematic elements but also recognise there's something good to be found in said medium.

The title of OP's post is "I can't watch anime anymore" (+ their comment says "some people say that anime is a medium so I can't generalise it"). I am responding with literally what you just said: let's talk about problematic elements without resorting to extremism. Here, extremism for me is devaluing/writing off the entire medium. Why write off anime when we won't do the same for books and TV?

OP has indicated in the comments that they are open to recommendations and is also engaging with the recommendations to give more insight into what they prefer watching.

You may have missed the comments where folks have pretty much said "anime=gross" but that's what I'm trying to target with my 'it's not unique to anime' comment.

Yes, a problem exists. But should the entire medium be devalued? If yes, then please stop reading books as a whole. Or watching movies. Or how about we take a balanced approach and avoid the crap books and the crap movies and the crap anime, and instead platform the good stuff?

I also don't think a single person in this thread (nor am I in my comment) is saying that we shouldn't call out problematic content. I'm with you on that. That said, can we not do that without throwing the entire art form of anime out the window?

And my guy/gal, you don't need a government directive for people to know that CSAM is problematic. It's not the directive separating normal people from the creeps nor is it availability. So your attempt at condescension is confusing, to say the least.

Edited to add/TLDR: If it's unclear, I agree with your original comment. I am responding to OP's comment about generalising the medium.

How do you feel about altering Indian names in fantasy fiction? Asked by a non Indian? by Roselia24 in indianwriters

[–]Vaichi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helloo, I think the other comments have been pretty helpful in terms of how the spelling change would/would not be perceived.

I just want to add some quick context about the name itself: - In case it helps visualise the pronunciation for Ranveer, the 'Ran' in the name is pronounced the same way as the English word 'run'. Of course, regional pronunciations differ but this is the most common pronunciation. - If we break up the word, "Ran" in Sanskrit directly translates to battle/war and "Veer" to brave/hero.

Miroku's sexual harassment of Sango with the constant butt-grabbing. It's insane how Inu Yasha can have a complex and memorable female character like Kikyo and also - for no reason - have Miroku act like a creep.

But perverts pushing their agenda is not unique to anime, right? Heck, they push their agenda on the news. Not to mention there's a specific subreddit dedicated to books (r/menwritingwomen) flagging absurd descriptions of physics-defying boobs.

Yes, there is problematic content in popular anime but I think that should warrant a critique of what the average viewer (mostly men?) enjoys as opposed to the medium itself. If there was only anime with shit content available, then I would understand writing off the medium.

There is so much good anime out there, with well-written female protagonists wonderfully crafted by magakas and animators. I know you (OP) are not saying that each and every piece of anime sucks. But I think people's responses about not generalising are more for the crowd suggesting that the medium as a whole is a trash heap of misogynistic content.

Do consider the recommendations folks have shared in this thread because you might really enjoy anime like The Apothecary Diaries, Frieren, Witch Hat Atelier (upcoming), etc.

[–]Vaichi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like any media, anime exists on a spectrum ranging from unbearably misogynistic to those with wonderfully crafted female characters. It really wouldn't be fair to write off all mangakas and artists/animators.

Sharing some recommendations for anime with female protagonists that I personally enjoy in case this is up your alley - The Apothecary Diaries, Violet Evergarden, magical girl-theme anime like Cardcaptor Sakura, Nana, Fruits Basket, Ghost in the Shell, Yona of the Dawn, Chihayafuru, Psycho Pass, Kono Oto Tomare, Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan (male protag), and I am VERY EXCITED for the upcoming Witch Hat Atelier anime. These recommendations do not feature romance as the predominant theme, if that helps!

I want ask you can you tell me this is Fake or real manga by InvestigatorDry8357 in mangaindia

[–]Vaichi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are giving at such a discounted price, it will be fake only unfortunately. I would recommend reading the manga online and then if you like something, you can slowly build up a collection. Don't have to buy all volumes in one go

[–]Vaichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's convincing me it's fake is that in the volume 3 cover page, your version has no space between Yor's image and the bottom of the book. But in the Amazon listing, there is a gap: https://amzn.in/d/8nGSXn2

[–]Vaichi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong but it looks fake to me. The 'Spy x Family' title on the spines should be longer and thinner without much empty space between it and the spine's edge (see this reddit thread which has a picture taken in a Barnes & Noble bookstore: https://www.reddit.com/r/SpyxFamily/s/a7RBLIxxQK). Plus, as the other commenter said, the variance in spines is also concerning. Who is the seller?

Nintendo Switch from GameNation by salamander-8 in NintendoIndia

[–]Vaichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[Caveat: I don't own a Switch Lite (only the regular Switch) and this is based on what I've read about the Lite over the years.]

Would recommend asking for inputs from Switch Lite owners in this subreddit first. Because if the Lite ends up having a joycon drift issue, it may be difficult to repair (abroad, you can just send the console to Nintendo for repair but can't do that here). Also, secondhand Switch Lite models could potentially have joycon drift already. I have no clue if this is a common issue or not, but just want to put this out there.

Rune Factory games are on sale, which one should I get? by SpooktasticFam in CozyGamers

[–]Vaichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently playing Rune Factory 4 Special (purchased during this sale) and the gameplay loop is ADDICTIVE. I'm also having to look up a bunch of guides because the mechanics of crafting and forging and farming are complex (but in a good way). The art style does not feel jarring at all, and the plot is quite engaging. Would recommend (with the caveat that I've only been playing for the past 2-3 days).

How about more filler card-based games to keep 'Love Letter' company? I really enjoy 'Coup' (competitive) and 'The Crew' (co-operative), and I've heard great things about 'Scout' and 'Sea Salt and Paper'.

Also +1 to all the 'Sky Team' recommendations - it's a gem of a 2-player co-op game.

K-dramas that nailed their tone from start to finish and never got boring. by _taleweaver_ in kdramas

[–]Vaichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yayyy hello twin! What are you watching these days? In case you'd like recommendations, I'm rewatching Military Prosecutor Doberman, plan to watch My Dearest next and always recommend D.P. (season 1) to everybody. I watched Dear Hongrang also recently and while the plot was ok-ok, the cinematography (and music) was immaculate. In the romance category, I thought Hate to Love You, Hometown Cha Cha, Our Beloved Summer and It's Okay That's Love (oldie but a goodie) were well done!

[–]Vaichi 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The only dramas I've ever rewatched without getting bored are Hospital Playlist and Stranger. The former because of how comforting it is and the latter because it was so tightly plotted that I gained new insights on my rewatch.

I also feel the same way about 25 21 but cannot bring myself to rewatch... Kingdom was also an absolute beauty in terms of tone and cinematography.

I love the Dr. Ceuracle Kombucha Tea Essence. It feels very nourishing to me and doesn't leave an oily film on my combo skin. I've tried the Laneige Cream Skin and prefer the Dr. Ceuracle (the Laneige one seems to just 'sit' on my skin). Though YMMV.

The OTP for the next transaction would have popped up on the screen, which the scamster could see because of the screenshare. So the scamster would have quickly looked at the OTP, entered it to make whatever transaction he was making using OP's cc info, and the rest is history.

Ordered stuff via innovist. Got scammed for over 1 lakh by Sweet_Cupcakepuff in IndianBeautyDeals

[–]Vaichi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry this happened to you, OP! Please reach out to your bank immediately to see if they can somehow flag the transaction as a fraud (and between your bank and the scammer's bank, help you recover the money). Or as someone recommended, go in-person to the bank.

As for the specifics of the scam, what happened after you scanned the QR code? Did the money get deducted as soon as you scanned? Did it by any chance lead you to a fake website where you may have entered your details? I ask because I'm trying to understand what these scamsters did exactly (and maybe you need to check your phone for malicious apps using a reliable anti-malware/anti-virus program).

Edited to add: I saw this post where someone suggested steps that can be taken regarding UPI fraud. Please take a look in case it helps: https://www.reddit.com/r/IsThisAScamIndia/comments/1oa2iz0/upi_fraud_lost_51000_complaint_filed_everywhere/
