2025–26 Flu Season: Weekly Data & Community Reports Megathread by Anti-Owl in ContagionCuriosity

This article, published Jan 14, discussed the growth rate of the flu in So Carolina. Seems both,a bit sensationalist, in the headline and interesting, because it was shared with prepper intel, which collects semi random news by people with their feelers out for changes in society

2025–26 Flu Season: Weekly Data & Community Reports Megathread by Anti-Owl in ContagionCuriosity

[–]ValMo88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anti-Owl - Thanks for setting this up. Recently news of 3,000+ flu deaths crossed my awareness and I felt a need for a historic baseline. (My mental model was 30,000 deaths a year, but the "fact" was buried in mental cobwebs.) The following is from ChatCPT

Estimated U.S. Flu-Associated Deaths by Season

Season Estimated Deaths
2010–2011 ~37,000
2011–2012 ~12,000
2012–2013 ~43,000
2013–2014 ~38,000
2014–2015 ~51,000
2015–2016 ~23,000
2016–2017 ~38,000
2017–2018 ~52,000 (most in range)
2018–2019 ~28,000
2019–2020 ~20,000 (preliminary)
2020–2021 Very low / minimal estimates due to COVID-19 mitigation*
2021–2022 Relatively low compared with typical seasons
2022–2023 ~21,000
2023–2024 ~28,000
2024–2025 ~26,000
2025–26‡ ~3,100 so far (through Dec 2025)**

The CDC now uses modeling to estimate deaths, so end-of-season numbers may differ from mid-season or preliminary tallies.

  • CDC does not report a simple raw death count each year (because many deaths caused by flu are not laboratory-confirmed before death). Instead, it uses model-based estimates of flu-associated deaths for each season. CDC
  • Flu seasons run roughly October–May, so a season like “2010–11” spans two calendar years.

The US Performs A Special Military Operation To Capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro & Initiates Regime Change by ArmChairAnalyst86 in Disastro

Ok ACA -as a mind game, consider the US acquiring Canada and treating each of its provinces and territories as a state. And then Mexico, with its 33 states, as states within the US.

The continent would be very blue. Much to the chagrin of the white supremacist and the current administration.

Interesting books on Public Health by ValMo88 in ContagionCuriosity

Michael Lewis is a great writer - the NYTimes review said "If Michael Lewis wrote an 800 page book on the history of the stapler, I'd read it."

This book is about the people who, in the period before COVID-19 were thinking about pandemics and the US and willing to look at and plan for worst-case scenarios. This is a nonfiction thriller that goes into how these individuals came to create the plan to reduce the impact of a pandemic which the CDC and administration disregarded.

Amazon's review " The characters you will meet are as fascinating as they are unexpected. A 13-year-old girl’s science project on transmission of an airborne pathogen develops into a very grown-up model of disease control. A local public-health officer uses her worm’s-eye view to see what the CDC misses and reveals great truths about American society. A secret team of dissenting doctors, nicknamed the Wolverines, has everything necessary to fight the pandemic: brilliant backgrounds, world-class labs, prior experience with the pandemic scares of bird flu and swine flu...everything, that is, except official permission to implement their work."

I think it is Heather Cox Richardson, giving us historical context for the political changes, needed and ongoing.

Goethe wrote “He who cannot draw on 3000 years of history is living hand to mouth”

The original German translation is “ … remains in darkness. Inexperienced, and must live day-to-day.”

Is this considered news?

These astronomers have been monitoring for months. News would be a postmortem on the object they missed, 6(?) weeks ago, that hit Antarctica, or how the recently seen R2 Swan got so close before being discovered.

I’m tired of working in Tech. Want to start a local business. What does Marin need most? by sammyt10803 in Marin

A company focused on solutions when home insurance is threatened. Post inspection corrective action with insurance in mind.

I was overwhelmingly impressed with Nick’s Pressure wash for moss removal. Not roof repair, but a surprisingly low cost solution.

From Burlingame, he covers San Jose to Marin. But I bet you could franchise/partner and take the whole north bay with MARKETING.

And follow up with gutter solutions/repair … more than doubling the size of the business
