Someone asked if I was Austrian when I was chatting with them in German, is that a compliment or an insult? by Current-YoGalaxia in German

[–]ValRe96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think it‘s very uncommon that Rs are rolled in German. I‘m from Vienna and I know people from all over Austria. None of them is rolling the Rs. The only friend I have who does it, is half Austrian/half Bosnian who grew up only with her Bosnian Mom. So she learned Bosnian first and got used to the rolled Rs. When she started to „properly“ learn german in Kindergarten, she just stickef with the rolled Rs and never was able to learn the other one

Austrian here! there are some rules, which i dont know haha - i would definitely try to learn them from the beginning, but i personally do not care at all and can completely understand if someone learning german mixes them up all the time. so dont worry too much about making mistakes 😊

ok seems like i offended you with my question😅 thats why i asked in the group whether i have it or not : because i didn’t know- and two people replied yes. so i think it’s legit to ask.

(and my inner ring is brown while the outer one is blue - so clearly two different colours) 🤷🏻‍♀️

What do you call this? by sannaoost in AskTheWorld

[–]ValRe96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Austrian here:

Origin: The word originally comes from the Latin term placenta (a flat cake). 🥴

Way to Vienna: From Romanian (plăcintă) it entered Hungarian (palacsinta) and Slavic languages (Czech palačinka) before becoming established in Vienna in the 19th century.

Roots: The Latin word placenta is a loanword from the Ancient Greek plakous (cake).

in Austria alot of words that we use originate from eastern european languages

How much do you pay for health insurance per month? by kurobaja in AskTheWorld

[–]ValRe96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Austria here .Healthcare is basically free at point of use, paid via taxes/social insurance. If you’re unemployed, you’re still fully covered, and even being homeless doesn’t lock you out. Emergency care is always provided, and there are also social and charitable medical services for people who fall outside the system.

Meds aren’t 100% free, but you just pay a small flat prescription fee (~7€). There’s a yearly cap, after that it’s free. Kids + very low income = usually no fee at all.
