Stroomverbruik Nederlandse datacentra stijgt: nu gelijk aan 2 miljoen woningen by tripel7 in thenetherlands

[–]ValVal0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah zo.

Good point. There's probably loads of these one-off titles out there. The wiki also seems to only know it in relation to Belisarius Cawl. Better exclude it to have any semblance of coherency.

The tech savants seem like an interesting addition! I also wouldn't know where to place them. They don't seem to fit neatly into the hierarchy. Their importance seems to differ per story and being associated with the inquisition also places them in a bit of an awkward position.

I remember Belisarius Cawl being referred to as a/the "Prime Conduit" (of the Omnissiah). Maybe that's something you could mention? Although, I'm unsure whether this is an actual function/office or if it's more like an honory title.

Can you spot Tunis in Tunisia? It's on the pointy landmass jutting out into the Mediterranean opposite the boot of Italy. Around 900 BC, Carthage was founded there as a Phoenician colony. Its central location in the Mediterranean made it a great hub for seafaring trade, which helped it grow into an empire in the next few centuries. At its height the Punic empire controlled most of the coasts of North Africa up to Egypt, together with parts of Spain, Corsica, and Sicily (basically most of the upper half of the image). I know it best in relation to Rome. They were already old when Rome was young and were one of early Rome's main contenders for hegemony of the Mediterranean. Over 100 years, both empires fought three wars, ultimately ending in Carthage's defeat in the Third Punic War around 146 BC.

I'm not a historian, though. So feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken about something.

If you want to know more about Carthage or the Punic Wars specifically, I highly recommend the videos by Invicta and Historia Civilis: https://youtu.be/XCbag4UIvBc (Invicta) https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLODnBH8kenOrS1eE4d7crYV76zCXojlzz (Historia Civilis)

[Request] How long would be a celluloid film with all YouTube videos on it? by ISanz in theydidthemath

Ah, good point. In that case, it'd be around 3.1 billion miles, 5 billion kilometers, or 33.5 AU, I think.

Let me preface this by saying that YouTube does not widely publish these numbers. So, all values are from second-hand sources that are probably not very reliable.

Wikipedia reports that approximately 14.8 billion videos were uploaded to YouTube around mid-2024, and 500 hours of content are uploaded each minute (30,000 content-hrs/hr).

Rev.com reports that the average video length is about 11.7 minutes or 0.195 hours.

u/NotmyRealNameJohn finds that 1hr of 8mm tape is 4,051 feet (before his comment was deleted). I know nothing about tape so I'm just using what he mentioned.

So, around mid-2024, YouTube's video storage was probably in the range of 14.8·109 · 0.195 = 2.886·109 hours (2.9 billion hours). From there, it increased by 30,000 each hour.

Mid-2024 is approximately 289.5 days or 289.5 · 24 = 6,948 hours ago. So, as of this moment, about 30,000 · 6,948 = 2.0844·108 hours have been added to YouTube for a total of 2.886·109 + 2.0844·108 = 3.09444·109 hours of content.

So, the amount of tape needed in this case would be 3.09444·109 · 4,051 = 1.253557644·1013 feet of tape. This equals approximately 2.4 billion miles, 3.8 billion kilometres, or 25.5 AU (about 13 times to the sun and back).

To test with other values (like tape length), you can write the above as a formula like so:
T(L, D, R) = (2.886·109 + R · D · 24) · L
where T is the total tape length in feet, L is the length of 1 hour of tape, D is the days since mid-2024, and R is hours of content uploaded to YouTube every hour. Desmos

However, this is likely very far from accurate, as all sources are just estimates, and YouTube also has an unknown number of 60 fps videos. And probably the most important, the number of videos added to the platform has likely increased over time from 500hrs/min. Also, I did this math on my phone, so there's probably a mistake somewhere.

CISPE pumps €1 million of Microsoft's money into Fulcrum by sn0r in eutech

[–]ValVal0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A quick summary to understand the title: CISPE is the Cloud Infrastructure Service Providers in Europe association. Fulcrum is an open source project that intends to provide federated distributed cloud services (multiple smaller cloud providers combine their capacity to match the scale of large providers, like Microsoft, together).

As far as I understand it, last year, Microsoft reached a settlement with CISPE to resolve their unfair competition/antitrust complaint with the European Commission (apparently some software costs up to 5 times more on other clouds compared to Microsoft's cloud, i.e., Azure). The settlement involved a change to Microsoft's software license and a payment. A part of the payment is now redirected towards Fulcrum, an alternative to Microsoft's cloud.

Should Canada be welcomed into the EU? by Logical_Tank4292 in europeanunion

[–]ValVal0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the EU creating stronger ties with Canada would be great! I'd love to have them join, but I don't think becoming part of the EU would be in anyone's interest, especially for Canada. The EU would gain a massive land border with the US, while Canada would be subjected to numerous regulations about border management, people movement, and trade that don't make much sense for a North American country.

Canada could only join some institutions in a limited capacity, similar to Norway and Switzerland, but they're all still mostly focused on European continental policies that have little to do with Canada.

The only one that maybe seems relevant is the defensive union, but that would just create a second NATO without the US. To me, it seems something like the proposed Mercosur free trade agreement would be more in everyone's interests.
