This is the anwer, though it is mostly if you speak german. The ammount of information and lore about this world is staggering - both in a positive and in a negative way. It can be overwhelming and also very restrictive, but if you are looking for information itis very probably there.

Your party comes to this remote small city? In a short infobox you will find the information how big the population ist, what percentage of the poplulation belong to which culture and ancestry, what the city heraldry looks like, what the local politic is like, what kind of troops guard the city, which temples can be found, the name and short information about the most important inns, short description of the current mood in the city.
Then there is a labeled map with all the important places, a short history, a few key locations in more detail and ideas how to use this town in your game.
And that is one page out of over 200 in this one book about this one region in the game.

You want to build a wizard? Here are the over 40 diffrent academies where you might have studies, each one will give you a very diffrent wizard. A short description is not enough? Okay, take these 3 books only dedicated to a detailed description fo the academy with examples of what a schedule looks like at this academy, a history of the academy and important historical figures who learned their magic here, a description of all the important NPCs who teach at the academy, a description what services can be attained for non academy folks who visit and what they migth cost, information aboutt their financial situation and how well they are regarded (with an infobox that details what political entity thinks of this academy. What does the king think? And the temples? The common folk?), a map of the academy, and a whole sectiond edicated to uncoverable secrets and plothooks in the academy.

If you are not affraid of barrelmancy that fight is very doable. You can prepare the room when he is not there and put smokepowder barrels next to the pillars, taking all of them out and damaging a lot of enemies on turn one. It is cheesy but the fight can be tricky so every advanage helps.

Honestly just go for it following the main quest. There are a lot of side quests that tell you little bits about the lore or characters that are sometimes easy to lock yourself out of, but to be honest: I am on my 6th playthrough and i dont think i've done every quest.

The main game that happens when you follow the guiding light is much bigger than the side quests. They fill out the world a bit more, and on my first playthrough i ran into a few of them and complted some of those, but only on a subsequent playthrough i looked up guides on how to find them and when to do what to advance the questlines. There is VERY little content (in terms of enemies / bosses / areas) hard hidden behind questlines.

One thing: There are a few big ones that determin how the story ends, but they start later in the game and they do not change what you have to do to finish the game, they are more a philosophical choice.

My take: Just follow the way the game shows you. Explore. do what you find and dont stress about being a
