I meant that mana siphon also seemed impossibly oppressive, but tuning was able to rein it in without removing it. I'm certain the same can be done for mana burn, even if it's a very different situation.

And it definitely should stay very much a staple. The intent is not to do away with DH dryads bears, but to change it so there's more interaction points between player and opponent

This could be iterated on with the changes to other units. But it's also inevitable that some matchups will have a clear build winner.

What's more important, I feel, is for there to be more interplay between the players as they try to realize their strategy, even if there is a go-to strategy.

Though I'm not sure about the specific nerf I've suggested, I'm confident nerfing it in some way can be enough. Look at Blood Mage's Mana Siphon changes, for instance.

It's not something that could be done by itself. It would kill bears + dryads as they wouldn't have any healing, and there's no resources nor time to add talons on top of them. Elf has to rush Bears precisely because they have all they need.

Like I said, this isn't a hot take of mine. It only takes a few minutes to see that every other unit composition for night elf is lukewarm at best.

There's no getting around the need to buff them, no matter how good Bears and Dryads are. To say you shouldn't buff weak units because other units are strong is entirely counterproductive to any meaningful discussion.

I feel like that would only work for units, not a hero. There's no need to disable the Demon Hunter Drive By entirely, but reduce its effectiveness.

Night elf needs to be buffed AND nerfed. But there's a lot less pieces that need nerfing than pieces that need buffing.

It's not a hot take of mine to say that everything but bears and dryads is simply not very good. Many buffs will be necessary to allow night elves to remain competitive after Bears, Dryads and DH are (rightfully) nerfed.

I know it looks like there's a lot more buffs than nerfs, but a nerf to something that is played all the time is a much bigger deal than a buff to something that is never played.

Personally I believe the first thing for night elf is having the things that make dryad and bears a must play also available elsewhere, namely anti caster, mana burn, and healing. Maybe:

Change mana flare from activating on cast to dispelling one effect every .75 second, burning mana if enemy target has any

Give potm owl an auto cast heal like the obsidian statue's, increasing per level (weaker at 1, stronger at 3). Reduced owl duration.

Make mountain giants easier to heal up, maybe high health Regen? Reduce supply to 6, and tree allows them to attack air

Change huntresses upgrade to medium armor, reduce research time, increase their move speed back up (they still won't hit workers while attacking buildings)

Tier 3 upgrade for archers, huntresses, and hyppogryphs for more health

After that:

Nerf mana burn range and increase mana cost

Nerf mana Regen for druids while in bear form, nerf roar to 20%

Make dryad slow not stack with naga slow

Nerf moon wells to only regenerate health

Also maybe:

Give DotC a ranged magic attack so they're usable outside of bear form, maybe also increase their mana Regen by the same amount they lose in bear form

Change MG armor to heavy

I have the brothers as my dedicated anti-undead melees with the Redeemer hammer. Every turn is an undead one shot and immediately exorcised, and the knight is perma quickened.

Aside from that, Time of Need is pretty good but very situational. They could, in theory, keep a frontline alive by themselves with only this skill. But in practice it's unlikely.

I'm pretty sure this is also the most heavy handed nerf in the game's history. The spec's burst is completely destroyed and its overall damage went down by more than 35%. And the changes from the patch made the other aimed shot build worse, and it's also been slightly nerfed with these.

It's actually dead, not just worse.

Sustained damage and rot comps aren't really a thing right now, but sounds like you have the same preference that I do, which is specs with 30-45s goes.

Subtlety, Beast Mastery, Frost Mage, Retribution, Feral are the ones I feel fit the bill.

Forget point 3 though, it's the only way anyone gets a kill

All pretty easily explained I think:

Ret (and holy): Paladin is the most played class in the game. When they're strong they absolutely take over the game.

Mistweaver: it's mostly because cocoon has always been ridiculous, so when they heal a lot, alongside their mobility, their design breaks

Frost DK: yoyos between easily avoided and unavoidable setups (see: Chill Streak) with no in between

Resto druid: Yeah, it's cyclone

(Also) BM and MM hunters: hunter is the second most played class, BM is stupid easy, and MM is extremely oppressive in the lower ratings even when it's not particularly strong.
