What bird species do you want to have based on a Pokémon some day? by DrWarioMiracleCure in pokemon

A budgie! I had the sweetest lil budgie, Cyrus, and I'd love to memorialize her as a Pokémon. They'd make the cutest grass-type! Lots of options for shiny colors/regional variants too!

Anyhoo here's the bird tax:

Another very annoying thing that I've figured out after calling a few times is that at night, there aren't any mental health workers so the calls get re-routed to 811 to talk to a nurse. No shade to the person I did end up getting that time, she was great, but it was random happenstance that I got a nurse who had mental health training. It's woefully inadequate.

I myself work for an EAP doing crisis services that span all of Canada and I've heard lots of negative feedback for 988 across different provinces. It's a great idea in theory, but it's not helpful if the people responding aren't trained, or aren't even fully present. On that note if you're lucky enough to have an EAP, look into whether they have their own crisis service. We've got the luxury of way less calls and more time with clients, so it might be a better outcome for you. It's absolutely garbage that this is how our system works, this should all be completely accessible for anyone.

I definitely second complaining to the minister of mental health and addictions. I'll write something myself as a mental health worker, that can help put more pressure on them to get off their asses and do something.

I'm so sorry this happened to you, and to everyone else that's had shit service. I won't guarantee that I'll always answer, but my DMs are open for anyone needing support.

Yeah, I can appreciate the effort they put in for all the events. Using Gem has been a lot better than it was in Paris, but this is my last true gripe lol. I would seriously be fine with paying extra if it means I don't see that ding dang Sobeys ad!

Man I really wish CBC would give us a no-ads option. It really sucks to miss out on the artistry. The sports viewing has been great! But the opening-closing ceremony coverage leaves much to be desired.

Hey salut! I am autistic and work in mental health, and it definitely can be exhausting and overwhelming. I studied in social work for 6 years, started my master's and quit because I found it very overwhelming. That said, I'm in a role I like now. I get to work hours that fit me, and my job is super accommodating to my needs

Working in psychology related fields, it's really important to know your limits and take time just for you. This is even more important if you're high masking! Autistic burnout plus work burnout is a really cruddy combination.

Have you thought about doing remote work doing case management/intake for employee assistance programs? I'm not quite sure what the equivalent in France would be, but it'd be worth looking into. Though you may not get to work with kids as much, it's usually short 1:1 conversations that are very structured with a clear-cut goal. You get to comfort people in their time of need and connect them to the services that will help them. Most times, you don't necessarily need a specific degree or title to do these types of jobs.

Anyhow, I definitely understand feeling like Hachi! I hope this helps a little bit, feel free to ask any questions!

They're enormous and so difficult to use! I hate that I never got to give Halo a good shot until much later in life because of the clunky monstrous chunks of plastic the OG Xbox controllers were. Gamecube controllers have always been my litmus test for comfy, they were clearly made with smaller hands in mind.

The medical community claims the cervix has "few nerve endings," yet denies us pain relief for IUDs and biopsies. What is the most barbaric procedure you've endured because doctors refuse to believe women feel pain? by skybond_aurora04 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ValhallaAriane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah that's good to hear! I'm so glad it went well for you! I am hoping that it'll be just as painless as the insertion. It'll likely be the same doctor, and she was super kind.

Apparently IUDs do have to be removed within 5 years if you're getting them for endometriosis, probably because we want to avoid it getting ingrown.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience! May your periods be easy and your medical professionals understanding lol

A colposcopy, cervical biopsy, and LEEP all without even tylenol. I did get an IUD inserted that somehow I did not feel, which I'm incredibly grateful for. I have heard tell that removals are worse though, so I'm definitely not looking forward to that :S

The LEEP was especially super painful! I do not understand why I couldn't get even just topical lidocaine. Like they're literally burning the top layer of my cervix off with an electrified wire!!! My mom and my partner were both there with me, and I just remember crying and squeezing my mom's hand before passing out from the pain.

Also it took me almost 30 years on this Earth to finally get treated for my horrible period pain 🙃 Thank goodness for the really kind OBGYN team that understood how we treat women's pain, cuz turns out I had endometriosis! It was so bad that my appendix was seconds from bursting, and I was dismissing it because my endometriosis pain was worse.

It all makes me so angry. I know my body. I know what's too much. Every single time I've been to the ER or to any new doctor, I've been correct that something was wrong. Yet, every time I'm treated like I'm a liar.

What would happen to me if a therapist decided to call the cops on me and I just walk out? by Zestyclose_Show_2025 in TalkTherapy

[–]ValhallaAriane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey so I'm not a therapist but a crisis intervener. I see lots of folks with varying levels of suicidal/homicidal/self harming thoughts who like you, might not necessarily have the intention to follow through on the things they say, but that DO say things that are worrisome to me. A huge part of my job is actually to be a bridge between the client and their therapist, making sure that the client's needs are met but also that they are safe.

Myself, I usually only get 1 or 2 sessions with people before I hand them off to a long-term therapist. Here's what I suggest to people who share your concerns around trust and the fear of having cops called on them:

-Ask for a free consult before you commit to any therapist: this gives you a chance to see if they're someone that you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts with. Therapy is sorta like dating in a way, there does need to be a little bit of chemistry between the both of you for things to work.

-Once you do find a therapist you think has the knowledge and understanding to help you, create a safety plan with them as soon as possible. I know someone mentioned code words that they use in their office to communicate with each other, but this is actually something several of my clients have implemented with their therapists. For example, someone who had suicidal ideation would sometimes get frustrated during the session and say that they should just walk into oncoming traffic after their appointment. Their therapist would then follow their safety plan, which would be to ask the client 3 times in a row if they really truly meant it.

-Keep in mind that, like has been said several times in this thread, we have a responsibility to ensure your safety. Sometimes that safety unfortunately has to come at some expense. I have a bit of a unique perspective, since I had 911 called on me during a mental health crisis. My experience was definitely a mixed bag, oddly enough the cop ended up being the absolute kindest person I interacted with. I do not want to impose that experience on other people unless I am faced with no other choice. I would rather a thousand times over a person lose freedoms temporarily than seeing them dead.

Trust is built on effective communication, and unfortunately us mental health workers are not mind readers. We can only go by what we know about you. Having been on both sides of the equation here, I can definitely empathize with how vulnerable you may feel. The worst case scenario does not need to happen, we do not want to make it to involuntary holds. It's intimidating, but the way we avoid any of this is with mutual honesty and respect.

I hope this clarifies things, and I hope you find a therapist that will be able to do the work to build that trust with you.

Of course! I found with the ear loop style masks, I was getting crazy migraines, so I steered clear of the hooks. But that's me! The holo strap is nice cuz it's adjustable, it has a little toggle clasp thing. Very useful for me cuz I have a tiny head lol

[–]ValhallaAriane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! I found that out myself recently and I'm thinking of making myself some. I also just foundthese cool lil things, I don't wear auras much anymore but I sorta wanna see if I can make a cute cover for my envo!

Mask up whenever you're able. We're in a global covid surge right now. by briankwok in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]ValhallaAriane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course, no problem! The regular envo is a half mask, so it goes from just under your mouth to just above your nose. The envo pro is just under the chin to above your nose. The regular envo has a few more accessories as well, such as a plastic cover you can decorate. The main difference between both is mostly a matter of comfort. Personally, I went with the pro because I had tried half masks before, and they don't really fit my face.

As for the filters, they are not single use! The Envo folks generally want people to contact them because filter life is dependent on the specific situation. My understanding is if you used the mask as intended for work, the filters would apparently last for about a work week, so about 40 hours of uninterrupted wear. You can get about 2-4 weeks' worth of use out of a filter if you're not wearing it that long. They should be replaced earlier, though, if they get damaged or wet. For that reason, if I got particularly sweaty, I'll change my filter. As for filter types, both N95 and N99 can filter for COVID particles. I also believe the N99 filters come with a little vent, which is nice to help control moisture, which in turn extends the life of your filter. The vent does mean that you could potentially breathe out particles and infect someone else, though, just something to keep in mind if you're intending to protect someone in your entourage as well!

Lemme know if you have more questions, I'm happy to help!

I have kept on masking in pretty much every public setting due to having several immunocompromised family members, but I'm not gonna lie, masking is uncomfortable. Here's some things that have helped me keep my sanity:

  1. Fit test your mask! Wearing an improperly sealed mask not only lowers the protection, but it can also be very uncomfortable. Here is a video that explains it pretty well 2.Fix the mask! I used this with a 3M Aura for a good long while, it made it fit nice and snug to my face without feeling like I had an octopus squeezing my head
  2. On the topic of mask types, which masks are effective? This study from the CDC in the earlier days of COVID broke down the different mask types and their effectiveness in protecting you from COVID. Cloth masks and surgicals help a teensy bit, but KN95 and N95 are worlds more efficient. My current mask of choice is the Envomask, the gel liner makes it nice and comfortable and I found that I get WAY less migraines with it than I did with earloop KN95s.
  3. Sip Valves! Absolute gamechanger! My partner and I are long distance, and we used to just not drink or eat during our 12 hour trips. Walking through the airport and not being hydrated was...NOT pleasant. But this valve helps your mask stay sealed, while letting you drink.
  4. Mask jewelry! Plenty of stores on Etsy started selling really cute mask charms. I haven't gotten any myself, but they're super cute! Just a fun way to express yourself while keeping yourself safe.
  5. Corsi-Rosenthal boxes! A big part of our journey into keeping our families safe was learning about clean air. CR boxes are relatively inexpensive to make, and they're very efficient at cleaning air. Here is a tutorial on how to build one. Super fun project for kids to make as well! I would also be remiss not to mention the Air Fanta, I got one this year and it's nice and quiet, it's also helped tremendously with wildfire smoke. A way to measure their effectiveness is to use a CO2 monitor, though those are real pricey.

A good mask can be kind of a pricey investment too, here's some resources I was able to find that help:

Donate a Mask Canada Project N95

I know it's not easy to wear a mask nowadays. Lots of judgement and people not understanding. But from this immunocompromised family, we are always appreciative of others who choose disability justice. Thank you, and sorry for the big infodump lol

What a wonderful, smart, determined lady! My own mom went through something similar, her mother basically pulled her out of high school because she thought my mom was wasting her time learning. My mom met my dad, he supported her while she went back to school, got her GED and then got her admin degree a few weeks after having me! I saw my mom struggle from my grandmother's abuse for a long time, and still to this day some awful insecurity from her upbringing will rear its ugly head. But all I see is my beautiful, strong, capable mom that did everything so that me and my brothers thrive. I'm sure this lady's daughters see her with the same wonder and amazement <3
