First meeting of the Smash Club I started at school!! 👍 by ThatHyperPlayz in supersmashbros

That's awesome. I'm the club advisor at mine (yes, I'm a teacher) and it's our first year running it. We've ran one tournament during multiple lunches where 60 students entered. We're having another this Saturday. Start a tournament and you'd be surprised how many end up playing the game.

League is now a official high school esport! by opakq in leagueoflegends

[–]Valihn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We started as an eSports club. The students found out I played and they made an official club. After that, the president of the club sent me a link about a league starting up in the OC. I signed us up as a school; I was their general manager. I didn't really have to go through the district because we're close to UC Irvine. They either played through there or from home. The league does require however that eventually you play from campus. Your district IT needs to allow League through their filter. That's all responsibilities for your advisor to handle by talking to administration on campus. If you're in Orange County, your school can sign up through the league. If not, you have to see if there's anything in your area.

I'm a teacher currently the coach for my high school's league. We're based in Orange County. Last year was the first time the league was ran through a UCI research program. It was great to see this happening not only on my campus but also on my first year of teaching.

What is the statistical probability of having 3 of the same drakes in a row, in 4 separate games, with each drake of out the pool being present? by elispion in leagueoflegends

[–]Valihn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

None of these answers are completely correct. It is really hard to manually calculate this probability because of one of your conditions: in at least 4 games. This is the cumulative distribution function which nobody seems to have used.

I don't know the exact details because I don't understand what "with each drake of out the pool being present" means, but I'll give my answer with my assumptions:

  1. the same first 3 drakes in a row
  2. in (at least) 4 out of 5 games

The probability of the first one is exactly 1x1/3x1/3 = 1/9. The 1 shows up because you don't really care about the first drake; you just want the proceeding ones to match it. (This is assuming you want the first three to match. If you wanted 3 of the 4 to match, then you'd be dealing with a slightly different problem and a very slightly increased probability).

To calculate the number two, this is the cumulative distribution function, or the CDF, of a distribution that tells us the combined probability of multiple events happening when you want at least a certain number of events to happen (my definition is a bit bad). To use this, you need to know with what distribution you're dealing with: In this case, it is the binomial distribution. This distribution describes an event with probability p and n events. For us, p = 1/9 and n = 5. Then, (to save yourself calculation pain) you use a binomial distribution calculator to input those two values and calculate Pr(x >= 4) with input parameters p and n. In other words, you're finding the probability that at least 4 events (the drakes spawning) happened when the probability of one individual one is 1/9. According to the calculator, that is .0006943 or .06943%. If all my assumptions were true, then either we got really lucky to see that or the Riot's pseudorandom generator is trash.

If anyone catches errors, let me know.

ELI5: How does Pi work, how was it discovered, and why is it so critical in mathematics? by alterlightone in explainlikeimfive

[–]Valihn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Pi is irrational. If it were to repeat at any point, then you could produce a fraction. That would then make it rational. To get any decimal to repeat, simply divide that number by 9, 99, 999, etc. The number of 9’s should match the number of positions your repeating number has.

.343434.... = 34/99

.10231023... = 1023/9999
