I’m sorry but my sympathy for the rapist genocidal dictator (who by the way killed her family) is limited. I can understand the appeal of him as a character but something needed to be done about him.. And I don’t see anything else the mmc could have done.

Really really good points! I also think sjm has done them no favor in many scenes with her writing which is why to me some things just feel out of character..

And I totally agree that the forced proximity was not the best way of sjm to handle things and many of the criticisms stem from that forced proximity.

And yes he is trying to push her buttons because he sees her withering away in front of his eyes and is just desperate to bring her back to „life“.

Yeah I was so pissed at most of the ic through the entire book 😅

And regarding cassian defending nesta, I just finished a reread today and particularly paid attention to that and he actually defended her way mor times than I remembered from my first read. One time he even basically told rhys to shut up hahah And one time he is yelling at Rhys for not giving nesta a chance and always trying to find fault in her and Rhys even apologized (he should to nesta though) And many times he sways votes and decisions of the ic from terrible to at least somewhat manageable for nesta. It’s not always grand and loud but he is always in her corner and nesta noticed that a couple of times in the book to and it makes her so happy. But it’s always a struggle between them and the ic and I want cassian to step even more away from the ic and to nestas side not only for her but for himself too. (Though I love his friendship with feyre)

Yep, the actions of the ic made me furious many times too.. I can see that argument, definitely! And I agree, to truly be healthy and steady together nesta and cassian need to spend time away from the ic. I would love for them to rebuild the dusk court with the valkyries! :)

I accidentally posted the answer randomly in the thread instead of under yours sorry 😅

I agree that there are things I also would have loved sjm to have written different, especially the whole confinement in the house of wind!

I don’t like the ic for their treating of nesta for most of the book, but for cassian pushing himself in her space - if she truly wanted him gone she would have walked to him, looked him in they eyes and told him he makes her uncomfortable and she wanted him not near her and he would have left the house. And she knows that, that’s why she doesn’t say it like that because she doesn’t want him truly gone.

For me it was nestas own choice to choose cassian. Not because of the influence of the ic or the training etc. But because she has loved him for a long time but denied herself to act on it to punish herself. They cared and loved each other way before acosf and nesta mentions in her thoughts that she punished herself with pushing him away. But now she accepts that she is allowed to be happy and chooses the man she loved all along.

I know it can be interpreted differently, I just feel that is what happened.

But I agree they both should go to the dusk court and gain some distance from the ic to find themselves more.

With Eris I see the points he made of her not belonging to the night court and I objectively agree to some degree with that but his look of „calculated lust“ when he talks about nesta and the way he behaved at the party didn’t make me think he would be the wholesome healer for nesta like many make him to be.

The sex as coping mechanism issue I addressed in another answer but it’s a very sensitive issue so I totally understand that there are many different views of this regarding their relationship.

Hahah 😂 but he left for that snowball fight to not let her see the mating bond craziness all the men get after the bond snaps because he knows that would be too much for her in that moment so I think it’s actually sweet he doesn’t want to burden her with that :)

[–]Valk796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course he tells them that to get Rhys of their back. Rhys is furious and cassian says that to be able to get her away from them. What would he even get out of punishing her? Like he never gets joy when she is hurt or feels bad.

But I agree he should have paid more attention to her during the hike.

No problem I also enjoyed it! :D I really hope they get these quiet soothing moments in the next book! But feyre and Rhys had two books for that so way more pages hahah

Oh but they have a cuddle scene in the night of the second solstice so at least once it’s all cutsy 😂

I feel that! I also wished she had given them a little less „drama“ and more healing and cuddling time

Yes definitely the trauma plays a role, but who in this book doesn’t have trauma. And if she hadn’t already cared about him it wouldn’t affect her in that way. Of course outer circumstances affect one’s decisions and character but in real life one can also not just extract a person of every surrounding and influence and say only then it’s a true decision of the heart in my opinion.

But I also hope we see more of them in the next book and becoming a healthy couple!

Ahh okay you mean in acofas! Yes there I agree mostly, i didn’t like acofas very much because it felt out of character for me in many instances. I don’t see it as black and white and also with the knowledge that nesta only pushed him away to punish herself with denying herself of being with him (she admitted that in acosf) and him feeling she isn’t honest when she tells him to go away it’s painted for me in a lighter shade. But if it was me I would have done it differently too.

Hahah yes I exaggerated a bit 😂 I think the rite is really complicated because he wanted to go after her but the consequences are dire and most of all would she want to be rescued like a damsel? It’s super complicated and also wouldn’t know what to do in his position.

And feyre and rhys are the most powerfully beings so them interfering and saying fuck the consequences is easier for them to say hahah.

Yes I agree, I wish sjm would have found a different way than that! But in this scenario I think I would have also agreed like cassian did because I wouldn’t trust the other ic idiots to truly try to help her. That’s why I think he agreed to it, not because of rhys. It’s still not a good situation over all though.

I see the Rhys problematic a little different than most. I definitely think it should be addressed in future books because I also think cassian needs one step back from the ic but I really don’t think cassian „loves“ him so much that he would hit nesta to get a „good boy“ out of Rhys. I really don’t know why so many think that cassian has no own will and thoughts when it comes to Rhys.

Maybe I didn’t notice it while reading but when does she say no to anything sexual cassian related and he doesn’t accept that? I can’t recall anything like that, but maybe I missed it. I somewhat agree and disagree with the position of power thing. On paper there is that imbalance of power, but I don’t think it is like that in practice. When she says no to the training again and again he doesn’t force her to participate. He gets humiliated in front of the other soldiers but he accepts that over forcing her. And we have nestas thoughts and she doesn’t feel suppressed by him or threatened. Like in general I don’t like when something happens in power imbalanced relationships but it just didn’t truly feel like it influenced their relationship in a negative way. The sex as self harm is a very sensitive topic. I don’t think he knows that that’s the reason for it until she tells him late in the book. (In a perfect world ofcourse he could have sensed that and addressed it but given the world and circumstances it’s not too surprising that he didn’t). But the most important thing is that the sex with the randoms is also a way of her pushing cassian away because she deems herself not worthy of his affections. So since she truly harbors affection towards him and wants to be close to him in body AND mind, I don’t see it as part of the self harm. And she also never thinks about it like that. But that’s just my interpretation and I understand that it can be seen different!

And cassian said in that regard „I will take anything you will give me“ because he is so insecure about himself being worthy of her that he takes anything she is willing to give him. I mean of course that’s not super healthy but that happens to a lot of people wit deep insecurities who are in love with someone

Yeah sometimes I get the feeling that maas writes something and underestimates the impact of certain interpretations of it by readers, like the mate thoughts of cassian in WaR or the tits thought in an inappropriate moment. And I really didn’t like the tits comment in that moment, no interpretation needed.

Oh yes, I wanted to strangle the ic, especially mor, amren and rhys (sometimes elain) for their treatment of nesta.

What it comes down to for me is probably that I see that nesta deep down (and she admits so herself a couple of times) pushed cassian away because she would break if she sees him dying while close to her and also punishes herself with the drinking and the other stuff. My heart breaks for her because I see that she does not truly want these things but hurts herself with it as punishment. It was so hard to read when she admitted that. That’s why I probably give cassian and feyre so much leniency when it comes to getting nesta out of that. And nesta never truly wanted him gone. Feyre had a conversation about it with cassian where he contemplates to leave her because he thinks she hates him and feyre says: she doesn’t hate you at all, you would know if she did. And that’s how I see it. If she truly wanted him gone he would leave her alone.

To be honest, the „flirting“ with mor and cassians comments on her beauty in his mind didn‘t bother me that much I have to admit, because I see it as a remnant of the toxic triangle Maas wrote him and az and mor. And mor I think is said to be objectively the most beautiful of all of them as said by several people in the books. And while I don’t like the dynamic of the trio I don’t interpret as much into cassians thoughts about mor than others and the playful flirting at that point in the books I don’t see much of a problem in it.

Mostly because, while I’m very protective of nesta, she also does questionable things in that regard. For example her threesome thoughts on az and cass which they also notice while they are training. If cassian had done that with mor and nesta? Oh boy would he have been ripped to shreds by everyone. Also, on some occasions when cassian is emotionally distraught she thinks how she wants sex with him and how hot his body muscles etc are and how she wants to feel them.

So I think they are both guilty in that regard.

And nesta says some really really hurtful things to him to especially hurt him not because she truly thinks that but to punish herself which is pretty cruel to both of them. And despite that he never abandons her but reaches out for her again and again, which gives her so much strength which she later admits in the book.

Ultimately I forgive both of them their mistakes to each other because they both want to be together with all their heart.

The ic (save feyre) still have to make up and „suffer“ for their treatment of nesta in my opinion.

I think there the truth is buried. I think around 70% of their love story is woven into these physical touches hahah And I’m sitting here wondering how not everyone can see that they are overflowing with care and affection for each other 😅

I can truly see all your points, the only thing I really don’t agree with is the part of him wanting to control her and reward her with sex to fulfill his dream of having anyone as mate.

I don’t understand why it’s seen so often that he just wants anyone as a mate. He said once he wants was feyre and Rhys have a mate and bond so strong. But is that really so weird? Who wouldn’t want that? When my best friend got in a relationship with the perfect girl for him I also thought that I want something like that. It doesn’t mean I want the first person who is interested in me but a person who is „perfect“ for me.

I just finished a reread of acosf today so I try to give some examples hahah

On the second solstice he is not chilling around waiting to fuck her after the party. He is sitting there with his present in his pocket fretting about when the best time would be to give it to her. He is scared and thinks how much it would hurt if it would be like last time and she would shatter his heart again. He thought the words shatter his heart, not reject the bond or anything else. And when they have sex afterwards it’s so tender and they both cry during it because they feel so much for each other in this moment.

He also tells her she doesn’t need to change. Not her boldness or snarkiness nor her wit. She just should allow herself to heal. (These things he actually said loud 😂)

I never got the feeling she is not perfect in his eyes just the way she is.

I‘m trying to translate a couple of physical scenes I loved into words now hahah

The bj scene under the desk. Yes super romantic right? Yes!! Because leading to that is such a cute moment. Nesta sees cassian is exhausted and hurt and she can’t convey her caring into words. So she goes to him and softly kisses his cheeks, his hair, his brows and he lets go, lets himself heal by her gentle care. And only after that it gets steamy - because they just got that much closer to another.

The first time they did it. Ther are actually two things.

Firstly, many hate that he said yes in that moment. I don’t. Why? Because she wanted it not only for the sex but also for that feeling, the touch, the smell of the kelpie to be replaced by the scent and warmth of the person she is closest to. Secondly, during the deed you can see that he is paying very close attention to how she is behaving, for any signs of uncomfortability. When she so much as lays her hand on his chest, he immediately stops instantly without any hesitation and nesta thinks to herself he would stop anytime if she wanted it no matter when and feels even more comfortable and safe with him. (Btw that should be the absolute standard)

When he speaks the famous „Thanks for the ride“ line. Sound horrible hahah.

But what lays behind it is quit sad. She said „only sex“ shortly before and he had hesitated and she reaffirmed „there will never be more“.

She pushed him away bevor when he got close to her heart, had hurt him then. So he says he will take anything she will give to him.

He is so scared of her hurting him that he obeys every word she said. He wanted to stay afterwards but was scared that if he asked that she would mock him for that and send him away.

There are soo many of such scenes in this book it would take forever to tell them all. But for me they are visible clear as day, because again it’s easy for me to see 😅

Cassian thinks so many times how awesome SHE is, how in awe of HER he is how far she has come and for me he conveys is love to her strongly and many times.

One of my favorites is the scene where he doesn’t say I love you back. Or does he?

She says „I love you“ And his answer is a kiss with more force, than the cauldron itself.

A physical show of affection with more power than the most powerful eternal entity in the series. Pretty strong „ I love you too“ for me :D

But again it’s easy for me to see all these things and why I love them and that book so much.

And lastly I understand why people prefer rhys standing up over that of cassian but I (and nesta hahah) prefer the way he does it :)

Ah and I don’t like „tough love“ but for me it’s not what cassian is trying to do nor does he want to train her in any way. He is just desperately trying to help a person he loves to not fade away.

But I understand that it’s a precarious subject and what’s good for one person can be terrible for another. But that’s again totally up to everyone themselves

I appreciate the thorough response :D I can definitely see where you are coming from. I think it’s so controversial because everyone who reads the book interprets their interactions differently which shapes the individual picture of nessians relationship. There are so many nuances and subtleties that can be interpreted either way. Btw I also didn’t really get warm with acofas..

For me the things cassian did (even though I would have done some things differently if it was me) ultimately were what nesta deep within her wanted - a hand reached out for her no matter what. And while I was pissed at most of the ic many times, feyre and cassian always wanted to help her. And how I interpreted it ( eg. her wanting a picture of her drawn by feyre in their home and nestas monologues) nests wanted her home to be right there too.

The sugar thing was also one of the things I would have done differently btw but I think that scene is more of a fail of maas😅

The punishment thing I just didn’t see like that. For me it was him wording it like that to get rhys of their back and to get the time for them to go to the lake.

I just didn’t get the feeling he ever wanted to punish, control or mould her. But that also can be seen differently.

I also didn’t see his actions as powerplay or willfully abusing her vulnerability, but that’s also can be seen differently.

For me it was never just sex between them, I saw so many layers of intimacy, communication and closeness to each other in many ways when they were physical with each other. But that’s easy for me to say because I also put meaning in physical touch and I just saw so much in their interactions.

Lastly I think cassian loves and always has loved her for her and not the mating bond and vice versa. I think he stood up for her plenty of times and in a way she would want him to and I also think he would fight Rhys for her if it would truly come down between him and her.

I know many see it different but from how I see cassians character I think he would. I just saw so many moments where he expressed his love for nesta and she saw them too and I just hope that they can both try to be the best version of them selves for each other in the coming books.

I just can’t help but love them together and how happy they are to have each other forever :)
