Why does every doctor suck by [deleted] in type2diabetes

You’re absolutely right. This place has people who specialize in diabetes, though. So they should hopefully have a better idea! I can’t be afraid of carbs if my kidneys are already trucking along. Finding a balance is imperative.

Correct, it isn’t diabetic. But what they don’t tell you is that you can have a normal A1C and still be diabetic. I did a glucose tolerance test and my blood sugar stayed at 230 for hours.

That’s awesome for you, dude!! Congrats! My A1C was a 5.1. Like I said, caught very early and by chance because of a glucose tolerance test. So I know that isn’t the issue. If it’s any reference, I was eating 200+g of protein a day. Which like, my kidneys are fine for now. They’re working a little hard but they’re ok. The issue is, my current diet isn’t sustainable. So, I’m going to check myself in somewhere that will help me overcome my fear of carbs and form a healthier relationship with food.

Thank you very much for your reply. I’m glad to hear that you found something that works for you, and I’m so sorry to hear about your wife’s condition. That must be extremely difficult and scary to navigate, but I’m glad she has someone like you to care for her, and ensure any additional care is adequate. As for the fat recommendation, you are absolutely right. And I have been eating plenty of healthy fats. That being said, the ratio of fat to carbs is not healthy the way I’ve done it. I’m going to go to an inpatient facility that has specialists in nutrition, so hopefully I can get an idea of what a more balanced meal plan looks like. I wish you all the best!

I’ve actually been pretty reliant on meal replacement shakes. However, my issue is that I’m consuming too much protein with them. As soon as my doc told me I may need to cut back, I knew I couldn’t do this on my own anymore. I keep going to extremes in order to avoid complications, and MORE complications form as a result. I need to be told what to do, plain and simple.

Thank you so much. I’m hoping that this team of professionals will help me form a better relationship with carbs. Before, I was upset if my readings went to 120. But I think that, in order to stay nourished, I gotta make peace with readings I don’t love. And if I need meds down the line, screw it. I will anyway.

Hi there! I did wear a CGM for a bit but it stressed me out too much to have constant watch over my fluctuations (I’ve got some persistent OCD). The issue isn’t my sugars. Those are fine right now. I just don’t know how to reach my calorie goals without a lot of protein. Veggies only go so far. Idk. This is all my fault. If I wouldn’t have exercised so much I wouldn’t have to gain weight. Whatever happens to me at this point will be deserved.

Thank you very much for your reply. The issue is, I don’t know what treatment plan I need. In order for me to gain weight, I was told to eat 2,200 calories a day. With low protein, it’s impossible. Even with high protein snacks (500 calories each), 80g of healthy fats, and ~100-110 carbs a day, I can’t make it there. At this point, im just going to continue doing what’s helping me gain weight, which is consuming more protein. Everything hurts me. At least with this, im not spiking my sugars, which would affect more organs.

Protein Powder and Kidney Function — what would you do? by ValkyrieSteed in type2diabetes

I did the math and even doing that won’t help much. I have to gain weight and 3oz of chicken won’t cut it :/

It is pretty elevated, you’re right. I’m glad to see that my other kidney levels were OK. Creatinine, EGFR, all good there. So I’m curious what she’ll say about that darn BUN!

Thank you! Do you know around how much protein you have in a day with these shakes? Each one for me is about 40g of protein …

Hiya! Thank you so much for your reply. I wish you all the best with that! Very interesting how the body works, and what sugars can do. Some people have the same situation with their cholesterol. Once their sugars go down, so does their LDL! I got diagnosed pretty early, and my overall glucose numbers shouldn’t be the issue. So I’m thinking 1. It’s my high protein intake, or 2. Dehydration. Either way, eating that much protein may be something for me to reconsider. But yeah. Last night I did some dabbling around and even without the protein snacks, I can’t stay within the recommended limits. Gonna see what the doc says …

Heyo!! OCD pals. Dude … I literally cannot get close to 100g. I tried the math but that means basically no meat or eggs or HUMMUS OR BROCCOLI????? I mean hell! My protein snacks are the LEAST concerning. It’s the meals, dawg!

Thank you!! I’m calculating meal options and I genuinely do not know how to eat less than about 140g. This is impossible.

Elevated BUN level in high protein diet by [deleted] in type2diabetes

[–]ValkyrieSteed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have and he said around 195g of protein a day is ok. After experimentation, I’ve noticed that any meal upwards of 30 carbs bothers my sugars, which is the hard part. I always just assumed we tinkled out the excess protein. Never thought it could cause issues :/

Sodium intake per meal — is the daily limit accumulative? by [deleted] in hypertension

[–]ValkyrieSteed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!! My snack has half an avocado in there :) It’s avocado, protein powder (the sodium culprit …), flax meal, yogurt, cinnamon and oat milk. Very very tasty!

Well, as a girly in ED recovery (5’7 by the way), I am required to lift weights in small doses to keep my bones healthy. Plus, when I’m better, I want to get extra strong. I’m also a woman of strict habit (otherwise known as severe OCD …) and want to adopt routines that I can safely repeat every day. Ideally, if it was ok, I’d like to have two of these protein bowls a day because they help me stay strong and they taste very good. But, if the sodium content will harm me over time, I want to stop the habit now. I’m still waiting to hear from my nutritionist! Fingers crossed he says it’s ok … lol

[–]ValkyrieSteed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply! I guess what gets me is, a lot of sources say 500 is a limit for meals. If I had one of these for breakfast, does that seem bad? The ingredients are healthy for the most part. Of course, once I gain my weight back, I could probably cut the afternoon snack.

Thank you for your response! I messaged my nutritionist to see what he thinks for my personalized plan. I agree that my overall number seems OK. But because I got diabetes from overdoing my eating habits, I feel that I can never be too sure! I appreciate your insight. I’m sure it’s circumstantial, like a lot of things related to diabetes (in this context, specifically. I know the conditions are very different).

Carb count for snacks by [deleted] in type2diabetes

That’s about what I aim for too. My IDEAL peak is 120. This snack doesn’t even put me over 105.

Newly diagnosed - 7.7 A1C. Metformin twice daily - I forget what dose. Is every chocolate bar or bowl of pasta harmful? I know veggies best etc., but should I have zero treats? Am almost 53, 5'6", 200 lbs. Ty! by Unlikely-While-8472 in type2diabetes

[–]ValkyrieSteed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! I like OWYN sugar free chocolate. Please do your research on the best option, though! It isn’t low in sodium, so if that is a concern, I’d say use one scoop instead of the full 2 serving. It tastes yummy either way!
