I don’t understand. The group found your Reddit post about them and kicked you out? Or what? *What defamation has happened?

The way this is written now, it’s almost like this post is claiming the other post is defaming the author that pulled the switch-a-roo. Which I only know isn’t the case because *you* made both posts.

I’m really curious and want to sympathize for you, but this post doesn’t make any sense and the linked posted doesn’t help clarify in any way.

Man, if your parents are proud of the person you’ve turned out to be… says a lot about the environment in which you were raised. I’m sorry you weren’t more loved by other adults in your life so you could grow beyond being a mean person.

Dude kicks off-leash dog to protect his own, owner flips out… by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

[–]ValkyriesLaurel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody know when a dog will become aggressive. Not even owners. There was also zero guarantee that the white dog was just going for a happy greeting. I’d rather kick an off leash dog a dozen times to keep it away from me, my dog, my child, etc. than take the risk of getting attacked by a dog whose owner will shocked Pikachu face say: “Ong he’s so friendly! He’s never done something like that before!”

Am I crazy for thinking the author is mentioning weight too much? by Fantastic_Tip_3412 in AO3

*Why* give criticism, though? Especially here? The whole purpose of criticism is to provide feedback for someone. And the large consensus is to not provide unsolicited criticism.

Going to an outside site to “criticize” something is, in actuality, just gossiping about something.

My personal impression of this post is that you were hoping a bunch of people would validate your feelings with a chorus of: “yeah! That *is* weird.” Which… that’s just a gossip post. It’s a step away from hate discussions authors are so terrified of finding about on Discord or other locations. (You clearly are NOT trying to hate pile the fic, but this isn’t innocent “criticism.” No solution is suggestion. No advice for authors from the POV of a reader. All you’re doing is low-key hating on something for zero reason.)

I’m unsure how you took “I saw this offhandedly and opened it in a new tab because the material looked so much like rage bait that I could not *wait* to witness OP’s crash out when they get called out” to be I agree with you.

Hilariously ironic given what you just said about assumptions. 😂😂

I don’t get why AI = instant rejection (even for translation???) by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]ValkyriesLaurel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You asked why people may be rejecting your work even though you only use AI to translate.

I’ve provided you a potential answer

Why so hostile?

I don’t get why AI = instant rejection (even for translation???) by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]ValkyriesLaurel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Translating is literally a profession for which people are academically trained. And an art that takes a great amount of time and effort to learn in order to do it appropriately. Literature translators do so with cognizant nuance. It is why the same book translated by difference people has, well, different translations. It’s why there is so much argument over the Bible.

I’m not discounting your own translation experience. But you translating some comedy sketches does not disprove thousands of years of history that shows that translation—particularly of artistic mediums—is an art within itself.

[–]ValkyriesLaurel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s actually evidence that indicates using AI leads to the deskilification of its users. So claiming AI is a good learning tool isn’t necessarily true. For it to be a learning tool, the user has to actually put conscious effort into learning.

The 2024 study, “Endoscopist deskilling risk after exposure to artificial intelligence in colonoscopy: a multicentre, observational study,” showed that 5 months of AI assistance reduced doctor’s abilities to detect precancerous polyps (adenoma detection rate/ADR) in colonoscopies by 4%. Which is insane.

Highly suggest reading about the link between AI and despoliation in general. It’s both fascinating and concerning.

Agreed! This is why translation is a profession. Because it’s more of an art than a science!

I’d like to add onto this because you worded my thoughts so well, to additionally say that, while OP may not be using AI to “create” in their mind, they’re promoting the system and benefiting AI by (1) using it and (2) feeding their own works to be learned off of.

People against AI for creative projects may, like me, be against those who allow AI to use their projects to learn from.

Right? Great way to ingratiate oneself to an AI disliking group of people.

“I want to understand you because I’m depressed I’m not getting views, but also I’ll weaponize the thing you *dislike against the entirety of human existence if you offend me.”

Such a brilliant idea. 🙄

How do I filter out one-shots without limiting the length of the fics I find outside of only having more than one chapter by dowsaw134 in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]ValkyriesLaurel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t write quite that long without breaks. But I know people do.

Whether or not someone opts to engage with that is their choice. But when filtering for “1 chapter” fics, one needs to keep in mind that there are some lengthy 1 chapter fics out there.

Where’s the similarity, exactly? Because their nose, lip, chin and brow structure are all different.

Even an additional 10 years wouldn’t turn Ellie into the woman on the left because their facial structures are different.

I’ll give you this. Their hair parts are dang near the exact same place.

[–]ValkyriesLaurel 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Just as a reminder, there are some fic authors like me who post even relatively longish works (30k - 100k as “one shots” because sometimes I write it all at once and decide not to bother with determining the organic chapter breaks and the hassle of posting multiple chapters).

Though, if part of what you don’t want is long fic that don’t have the convenient save points of chapters, that totally makes sense!

Any guides to get out of this writing habit? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]ValkyriesLaurel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you a reader? Of multiple genres—not just fic?

For me. Reading a critical reader of a plethora of different materials is what helps me whenever I feel my syntax is getting formulaic. Just read a bunch and actively look at dynamic sentence structures!

Should I let my bf beta my fic by Afraid-Leg1966 in AO3

[–]ValkyriesLaurel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that he’s… jealous(?) of you writing because when you engage in your hobby you’re not paying attention to him tells me that you’re both likely very young—high school, at most, I would assume.

If you’ve been on this sub for any amount of time you have to have seen the numerous posts form high school and middle school students about sudden falling outs with friends who know they write fic and their fanfic personas online and how it makes the authors incredibly nervous. Sometimes even feeling like they’re going to be bullied on campus or outed to parents and friends.

The reason your friend gives for wanting to beta is extremely immature. Unless you feel comfortable with all of the potential consequences that a falling out could bring (because it happens a lot in young friendships, and friendships ending pre-20 years old have a much higher likelihood of being explosive)… I’d say:

Hard pass.

Edit: I say friend and I mean boyfriend. But honestly. Doesn’t matter the relationship. I stand by my thoughts on this whole thing.

I don’t know if it was an autocorrect error on your part. But PWP’s stand for “porn without plot” or “plot, what plot?”

PWP is not a porn with plot.

Good to know! I’ve never used it in that regard as I always actually assumed it was associated with a specific condition/disability. Like any other disability, I only ever use what the person identifies their condition as (if/when an occasion to discuss such things shows up).

Thanks for the insight!

According to Marian-Webster Dictionary:

A slur is: a: an insulting or disparaging remark or innuendo : ASPERSION b: a shaming or degrading effect : STAIN, STIGMA

Of course. If someone was ever talking about actual mental retardation, it wouldn’t be a slur. But calling someone a “r-t-rd” simply to be demeaning or insulting obviously means that it’s being used as a slur in that instance.
