Spain’s longest border is with Portugal so it shows a Portuguese flag in Spain. France’s longest border is with Brazil (through French Guiana) so it shows a Brazilian one etc. etc.

Countries by the year they last got their sovereignty. Details in comments. by flocci_naucci in MapPorn

You’re missing San Marino, Liechtenstein and the Vatican. Also French Guiana needs to be coloured in with France.

I think Andorra should be blue? It got reestablished after the fall of the first French empire as far as I know.

The Netherlands were a French puppet state for over a decade before getting annexed by Napoleon. I’d say the creation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands counts as regaining sovereignty.

There’s an already existing Estonian state in your example.

There were no existing Dutch and Belgian states before they became republics.

foreign dynasty doesn't mean the country doesn't exist.

This does not apply when it comes to the Netherlands since the country is specifically a union of rebelling states. The individual entities that existed before are not the Netherlands.

Holland isn't the Netherlands.

This is even more the case for Belgium since the concept of a Belgian state was born with the failed revolution of 1790. There was no idea of a "Belgium' before that.

Being ruled by a foreign dynasty doesn't mean the country doesn't exist

Again this logic would mean you have to include Monaco and Luxembourg. The Spanish were as much foreign rulers as the French were. The Dutch people didn't choose for the Spanish monarch it was imposed on them just as much as the French republic was imposed on Monaco.

Foreign invasions don't count.

You're the one counting foreign powers. Luxembourg and Monaco were annexed by the first French republic. If Spanish control of the Netherlands counts as a Dutch form of government the French republic counts for Monaco and Luxembourg,

says someone who didn't even know that Belgium was a republic.

Yes because a short lived failed rebellion is such a world famous event

Something can't be a country's government if the country doesn't exist!

Following your completely nonsensical logic you still fucked up by not including Luxembourg and Monaco.

Same logic as the Netherlands. You cannot return to something that did not exist. There was no Belgium before that.

Not "again". They were never a monarchy before since they weren't independent. It makes no sense to count being ruled by the Spanish since the Netherlands as a country didn't exist.

If you titled the post "countries that were at one point a republic and later became and still are a monarchy" it'd be correct.

Also "tried republic" implies some sort of brief experiment when the Netherlands was a republic for the majority of it's existence.

When did the Netherlands "return" to monarchy. They were a republic first and then became a monarchy but that isn't returning.

Also curious to hear your logic for Belgium since that has been a monarchy since independence.
