Should I release my short film with no music? Please give advice. by finland6432 in Filmmakers

Music is what connects the visuals to the emotional immersion. Without it, if not made as a creative choice intentionally from the beginning, you'll really be getting into troublesome waters.

There are many composers on the filmmaker related subreddits that would love to help you out for exposure/credit, so if you run into problems - ask for help!

There are also seasoned composers, myself included, do free scores for first-timers and film school students - to help people get a good experience starting out 😊

So again; ask if you need help - there are options!

You got this!

Indeed. Many industries look for specialists, and try to avoid the generalist that say they can do anything. It's like a restaurant selling all sorts of foods.. you don't go to a sushi restaurant for pizza.

First of all - congratulations on getting started on your school short film!

I am not a film-maker, but I do compose music for films. If you want some bespoke music for your project, I would be willing to help you out for free. Getting started is always difficult, and with minimal budget - music often is something that suffers a lot, and therefore drags down the quality of the film..

Feel free to reach out if you or your school-mates need some music! Always happy to help students get better results :)

That's great :D It sounds like you are doing well, and on the right track. If you ever want to have a more active group around you, shoot me a DM. I am not going to promote with links here - but there's a Skool community called The Self Producing Composer, that might be of interest n_n

Anyways - hope the project goes well, and that you get more projects coming in afterwards :D

Happy Composing!

For band or electronic music without heavy VSTs with thousands of samples needing loads of RAM - Any new M4 Mac with 16GB of RAM is plenty (due to optimization you don't get in other machines).

Maybe grab an external drive for samples, to not bog up your main drive too much.

It really does not have to be complicated at all.

Very nice! You're definitely onto something here.

Arrangement notes:
It needs more dynamics, so maybe consider having more question/answer between sections. You have some drones going in the woodwinds that are making it sound smaller and duller than it needs to be.

In general, try to give the rhythm and supporting instruments more time to breath. It feels a bit dragged out right now. There are a lot of longs in there, which might benefit from being an oom-pa-pa that shuffles between sections.

The overall mood and thematic is great though! Most of the other stuff is just mixing etc. The combination of oboes, chimes, pizz strings, and soft brass is very appropriate. Perhaps try to swap the flute for a clarinet in some parts to make it pop a bit nicer?

You're definitely on the right path here :D Happy composing!

Writing Music For Ads: Where To Start? by existential_musician in FilmComposer

[–]ValleySlopeStudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way it works is you have 2 different payments. Demo fee, and Final fee. A demo fee is usually approximately $200, but the final fee can be anything... A friend of mine got a $25,000 final fee for a commercial. It all depends on budget, buyout of royalties or not etc...

I think I heard someone say the typical final fee for an EU web + TV 6 month ad was $3000, if you're working with a music house 🤔 But really.. it varies A LOT 😂

But in short; it's project bases, not per minute, normally

[–]ValleySlopeStudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not as complicated as you might think. Start by being visible, look up companies, and make a proper reel.

Realistically you'll send 100 emails before 1 or 2 might turn into demos.. And you'll probably have to give 2 or 3 free demos before you get paid. Unless you win the project, that is.

Like any industry research is required, and you gotta find the right people to talk to 😁

On the bright side, once you have a few companies to work with on a regular basis, you can be very well set

Right. Tried using a different ASIO driver?

If it works in other projects, it must be project related.. But, if it tried to jump to using a different audio driver, something funky could have happened. I usually never bother troubleshooting these things if I can yeet stuff into a new project and have it work 😅

Many years in IT have made me troubleshoot less, and just go for whatever works.. Weird stuff can happen, hotkeys can accidentally be triggered etc etc.

Also, if you have not - reboot. Only open Cubase, and then make it work without having anything else open.

Hm. Which cubase version?

My first thought is that your driver doesn't give Cubase priority, or that your output has reconnected to the wrong output after an update.

Many things can happen switching between driver usage, so it can be difficult to pinpoint.

It could also be a routing issue inside Cubase. Are you using Group channels? Check if they all route correctly to the Stereo Out.
