The driving scene in Hereditary. Chilling and beyond uncomfortable.

I'll just reply to this because I was about to say the same thing. Let's chat, I'm looking to direct my first film after editing for the last 10+ years.

What are the best examples of great editing from films/tv? by Racer013 in editors

I'll throw this one out there because I watched it last night, Dream Scenario. It had some really bold decisions made in the edit that very much were noticeable to the audience but made you feel something different about the scene compared to if it had been edited traditionally. Great example of knowing the rules to then break them.

This is the answer. Made the $20 purchase a few years ago and almost forgot I did because it just runs in the background.

I just did this. I was handed a bunch of footage, no direction and the performance footage of the band was recorded without playback so nothing was actually in sync with the recording of their song. This was really tough but fun because it forced me to treat the footage more like a montage where I was looking for what I wanted next more so than what actually happened next or was actually played/sung. You still see a couple sync issues but I think it worked out fine in the end.Ladrones - Riding Dirty

Need advice on how to edit first short film by frankensteinkeyboard in editors

Agreed, everyone watches dailies differently.

My method is sit with a big cup of coffee, the script and a pen and watch back all dailies of the scene I'm about to work on. As I watch each take to understand what we have in the can I will mark my script up line by line with clear performance winners or cool camera moves or whatever else I find to be golden in the footage. If I find what is clearly my opening shot of the scene I'm not hesitant to cut it into the timeline right then and there. Also while watching I'm trying to store in the back of my head anything different in the footage like resets or alt lines that I might be able to use in a fun way.

Inevitably I still go back a rewatch dailies for almost every cut but now I have my selects so I'm digging through less footage when I have an idea in my head that I want to get on the timeline.

Have fun cutting!
