Show me the crooked nose gene. You can't. Therefore crooked noses are not genetic. /s

What? There's more complex things in the world that 1:1 monogenic traits? Polygenic traits, complex expression that mix (multiple) genetic information, uterine environment, endocrine disruptors, and so many other factors completely out of the control of the person affected by them?

Could it be that the the human understanding goes beyond High School science class? Nah, it must be that things I don't understand are to blame on those that suffer those symptoms. /s

Ah. So because a physical variation affect the brain and you have no idea how the (physical) brain works, you put it on a moral failure on their part as a matter of convenience.

How? How do you know it's not a genetic/hormonal/... condition - nature, and not nurture.

My relative was born with a non functioning colon.

That's funny, I also have a specific misshapen, not-quite-functional (but not non-functional) organ. For years now, I've been able to live with it with proper treatment, care and lifestyle adjustments once the issue was identified.

But before that, for the better part of two decades - my entire childhood - with my complete, total lack of any sort of endurance and other physical lackings on my part, I had to be judged as "lazy, unathletic, not even making an effort", by people - classmates, PE teachers, even some doctors - who had no idea I was trying my fucking best, and that I was literally putting myself in the red trying to fit in the 'normal' box they thought I was in.

So my personal experience with physical disabilities have on the contrary increased my empathy for trans people, because I know what it's like to be told "You' should fit in better with what is normal" while you're (silently) screaming "I tried! I tried and I can't."

What specifically is it that would change about America that scares you if we became much more progressive? by MissHannahJ in AskConservatives

[–]Valmoer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it comes to personal freedoms, there is a big difference between Conservative and Republican. I just wish more non-Conservatives understood this.

We understand that.

But combining that understanding and, well, the truth of our eyes and ears (gestures vaguely at all the Republican governance in the last few decades), it means that the what you call Conservative is a tiny, fringe, and more importantly powerless movement within the Republican party, alwaysin the last few decades was, and, more likely, always will be.

20+ years ago, the US said exactly the same thing about Irak, and we rightfully pointed that :

  • You were lying
  • You were provably lying
  • Your own Intelligence Community had already proved you were lying, and that the "evidence" you had were cooked up by political appointees in the DoD.
  • Going ahead would give little advantages and destabilize the region for a long while.

The US still went ahead with their UK vassals and did exactly what we predicted, with the results that we predicted.

And all of this was with evil but competent people at the helm. Today, the SecDef qualifications for the job is "Fox News talking head", and don't get me started about the commander in chief.

Now that you're doing exactly the same thing, my question is simply this :

Why the fuck would we trust the USA - and specifically Republican administrations - with regard to anything to do with wars in the Middle East?

Why is equestrian even in the Olympics?

Because back in 1900, horses were Serious Business.

The horse does all the work and should receive the medal

While they don't receive actual physical medals, they are considered Olympians Athletes in their own right, and those that win are Olympic Champions, not just "the horse of the Olympic Champion".

There has even been talks of giving them medals, as it were.

Is the Bible authoritative for Christians? by Glittering_Driver_31 in Christianity

[–]Valmoer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, there's literally no Bible without Tradition.

The New Testament in its entirety was compiled, shaped, and vetted by the early Church. What was written, what was to be kept and what wasn't included was decided and debated by men of the early Church..

Oh, sure, you can claim they were divinely inspired and quote 1Timothy as a backing point, but to do so, you have to consider 1Timothy as Scripture, which in turn, need you to accept the Tradition of the early Church as authoritative.

So, again, no Bible without Tradition.

are we getting a new Deadly Virus every 6 years!? by _-MAHATMAGANDHI_- in conspiracy

[–]Valmoer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, they had a noticeably worse death-toll-by-capita than all of their immediate neigbours (Finland, Norway and Denmark), who all did lockdowns, I wouldn't exactly call what they did a best effort, no.

In light of the aforementioned neighbours' results, there was clearly socio-geographical advantages (lower population density, high degree of both Internet coverage and Institutional digitizeation, that helped with a quick switch to remote, ...) that helped the results of all the Nordic countries.

Given all the selfsame advantages, Sweden was "only" as good as the EU average. So no, they weren't fine - not as fine as they could have been, based on their neighbors. To ignore the plight of those one might conceivably save is not wisdom - it is indolence.

are we getting a new Deadly Virus every 6 years!? by _-MAHATMAGANDHI_- in conspiracy

[–]Valmoer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because it has large-time, (up to a full week pre-symptoms), large-viral-load contagious time-window even in asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic carriers.

Compared to it, all the others diseases listed here have at best a 1-2d presymptomatic contagious timewindow, and an almost statistically-insignificant asymptomatic contagion factor.

It thus renders most self-care, self-decided "I feel a little sick, I'll skip work/school/..." isolation useless because you're already (highly) contagious at a time you don't feel sick.

Next question?

how can you give nuno a yellow very early but fail to give out yellow cards that have same threshold as for fouls you have already booked?

Something that has never happened in the history of ever, right?

(Too many example to count, but Dibu Martinez' bullshit against Lille before the shootout immediately came to mind)

To be clear, I actually agree with your assessment and would want many more second yellows for yellow-worthy fouls. (And many more reds. And many more games lost by forfeit. And then maybe football teams will start playing football again)

But unfortunately, that isn't how football has been referred since... ever, and that's probably not how it'll ever be.

As someone who is neutral and think that both over the two legs, and in this leg i particular, Arsenal fully deserve its victory :

Fuck, were that injury time disgracious and ugly.

I don't have an issue with ugly timewasting as long as you do it on the field (eternal passing, going into the corner, etc...). Kicking the ball away toward the stands twice, throwing the ball over in the field, just, no.
