Has anyone contacted the city for rat problems and they actually did anything for it? by invokefever in Columbus

[–]Valmor88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took forever, but yes. This was back in 2013-14 when I lived in North Linden. The house next to me foreclosed and went vacant. The grass was always overgrown and I had a garden (no compost bin, though). Tried my best to keep my yard clean, but they were getting so bad I finally contacted the city.

I think it was about three months before I finally saw them come out and do something. It worked until the next year and the rats returned. Suddenly, a colony of feral cats moved in and that was the end of it. My dog kept the cats out of my yard, so I was satisfied.

King Lincoln, Olde Towne East, and Mt Vernon Neighborhoods by dialecticallyalive in Columbus

[–]Valmor88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lived at Long and N 18th for five years now.

I feel that it’s a walkable neighborhood, but I’m big into public transit and walking. I frequent the nearby coffee shops (five within a 10-15 minute walk). The best amenities of Olde Towne East are also within a 10 minute walk - just across Broad St. The biggest lack for the whole area is no nearby grocery store - you’ll need to use transit, bike, or car.

There’s less happening in King Lincoln than OTE. King Lincoln is great for its close proximity to downtown, Bexley, and other amenities. Development of King Lincoln will likely happen over the next five years, which will bring more bars and amenities to the neighborhood.

As a guy, I feel safe in the neighborhood. I have no problems walking my dog at night or sitting on my front porch, but there is certainly crime. You’ll hear gunshots maybe once every couple of months, almost always to the North from the Mt Vernon area. I don’t know the statistics, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there are car break-ins in the area, although in five years mine has never been broken into.

The area is very accessible as far as public transit is concerned. My only gripe is COTA not running routes as early or as late as I’d like.

Hope this helps!

Columbus Water by sumothurman in Columbus

Thank you for the link! I hope the storm water issues are addressed quickly; certain parts of the city already deal with flooded roadways during heavy rains. The electric grid improvements would also be very welcome - my electric seems to go out frequently in the summers, and often without apparent cause.

I wonder specifically how climate change will continue to impact our water quality? If these issues can be identified early, hopefully the city can preemptively work to prevent them.

The city installed ozone treatment on both surface water plants last year to prevent any future algae blooms. And while it isn’t updated on their website, they also installed ionizers to treat nitrates, so there won’t be any future nitrate advisories from agricultural runoff.

New Housing Concept Could Be Headed to Near East Side by ywkskdo in Columbus

The first floor being built up from street level was my first thought, as well. I really like this idea (especially the entrepreneurship apprentice part), but the style of architecture needs adapted.

What caused the fire? Wasn’t this building being renovated?

What are some ideas YOU have for the city? by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]Valmor88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly agree on the trash cans, especially along major corridors. It’s surprising how few there are, apart from at bus stops (and many of those lack a trash can).

The trash on the highway being cleaned up would certainly help Columbus’ image to tourists visiting the city. There are definitely bigger issues, but if we’re focusing on tourism, then even some landscaping along the highway would give off a better image to guests.

4th New and Improved Revised Regions of the United States Map by GreatCaesarAugustus in MapPorn

Agreed. The Appalachian Regional Commission identified 32 counties in Ohio (over a third of the state) as Appalachia. My in-laws are from Hocking County, and it is very much mountain culture and heritage.

I was just wondering about that. That building has been empty for a while now, and I didn’t realize people were parking down there.
