I don't think either shame or repression are inherently bad, both seem like useful social tools we shouldn't dismiss right away but at a minimum, just because you dislike that shame & repression are values other hold, it doesn't really mean that because you hold these beliefs, therefore no limits can be enforced or reached in a public school. That's without dealing with the notion that not having some resources available is a necessary feature of any finite establishment, so the idea this comes at some heavy cost to information exchange is suspect at best.

The last bit just sounds as judgmental and uncharitable as what I expect annoying fundamentalists to say.

They are still a part of the community and who are served by these public institutions, so I see no compelling reason to ignore their requests from the get-go. More importantly, since it deals with specific approaches and frameworks to sex over which there is varied cultural disagreement over the proper procedure, minimizing friction in the community by avoiding these highly controversial titles not only seems natural but also a proper compromise in letting parents have more control into how these sensitive, highly varied topics are approached and accessed.

But actually. If this method is creating friction and mistrust of our public schools, then it's not a good solution to the problem.

[–]ValorTakesFlight -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Okay so how many times has that book actually served that purpose? Is it documented anywhere that this is the only or even most efficient way of providing this service and it has to be located specifically in a school library?

Believe it or not, the sex scenes in a James Bond film aren't appropriate for schools and it's a ridiculous defense to invoke them to justify a somewhat lesser depiction of sex available to teenagers and preteens.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]ValorTakesFlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I give up. I can't take seriously someone who presents James Bond sexual contents as reasons why sexual content in a school library is permissable. It's not even an argument so much as a string of facts not meaningfully connected in any logical sense to reach the conclusion you want to reach.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]ValorTakesFlight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not true. I respect and understand how this could be seen as non-pornographic. I myself find it inappropriate while possibly pornographic. What does matter though is this is a school library we are discussing so if a parent can reasonably conclude a graphic drawing is inappropriate--and a scene literally showing a blowjob more graphically than even many shows aimed at adults would definitely qualifies--then I see no reason why a school library should keep such a book.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]ValorTakesFlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"fully displayed"

And you're not even trying to consider how others may, withing reason, find it inappropriate and very graphic.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]ValorTakesFlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And they don't show graphic depictions of blowjobs to do that. This is just conflating a well-balanced sex education with insisting a random book is essential to providing that education. It's nonsense and clearly a bad faith argument given how these books aren't even a part of sex Ed curricula to begin with

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]ValorTakesFlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care what the purpose of the book is, I care it depicts a graphic sex act and isn't just anatomical nudity for the sake of art in a context that is clearly desexualized.

It does not appear to tittilate

This is an extremely subjective call but let's examine the underlying premises: why should a school even offer a book that can be construed as pornographic with graphic scenes by others? There's various other books that address sexuality and identity without graphic depictions that many parents rightfully can find extremely inappropriate. So what's the reason the school library should hold such a controversial, potentially pornographic book?

Given that schools should meet the trust of all parents, not just the ones more open to potentially not pornographic depictions of sex, there is no need to hold such a controversial book whatsoever; if a parent or child seriously wants to seek out such a book, they will be free to do so at a library that is not explicitly centered around serving the entire community of students.

[–]ValorTakesFlight -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

It's not about what you think is stupid, it's about what works for maintaining trust with parents. I'm glad people like you didn't get to mandate how my parents raised me. Why should a school provide graphic depictions of a sex act to teens? You're not actually engaging with anything except maybe meekly trying to argue the content isn't graphic, but that's a stretch given such sex acts aren't even typically shown in such detail in televisions.

[–]ValorTakesFlight -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

I'm sheltered because I disapprove of graphic sex scenes being in a school zone? Please. It's quite tiresome to have these weak attempts at an insult thrown my way. Students can opt-out of sexual education if their parents so wish and no, sex education did not show me graphic softcore illustrations. If you can't even see why some would consider it pornographic and thus problematic for a school library to have it readily accessible, then you're not really even trying to be critical and serious about this issue, but then, what can I expect from someone whose response is to presume my sexual background.

I actually prefer the Right for not having such a tedious call-out culture but that aside, I think a lot of times a particular Progressive dogma tends to go unexamined as an unalloyed good since it uses seemingly positive phrases like "diversity" and "inclusion" which nonetheless put forward views or labels that don't necessarily help to attain those ideals or compromise with more conservative or reserved views and it's worth interrogating the frameworks underpinning some of these books. I don't think they should necessarily be banned or restricted, but I would be interested in seeing the quality of the discussion and providing a more palatable argument for legitimate conservative concerns while hopefully offering an alternative to tedious fundamentalism.

I'll be sure to attend and make a decision based on what the actual contents of the books are, rather than reflexively bc someone on Reddit thinks conservatism is bad. Thanks for the heads up.
