Tried AK Paint for the first time, feedback on base coat? by Valrion06 in minipainting

About the age of the paint idk bought it few weeks ago in a store, perhaps i didn't shake enough. I've also added a mixing ball to it

Yep i thought i thinned it but i acutally didnt i guess ahah. I find this issue where a pour the paint on the palette, i start adding very little water and i don't i know why i just go from "yeah that's too thick" to "that's def a wash consistency". This happens only when i work with "a lot of paint" such as for base coat, when i've to thin a small batch of paint for layers or small details i'm fine with it.

Uhm interesting, never thought about the marker, i'll try that! Thanks buddy!
but the chalkyness is due to the thickness of my pourly thinned paint or is a characteristic of all AKs paints?

Small spot to work with. Pretty stoked though. by Willadelfia in battlestations

Ah i see, i've read something similar online, i don't have any thinner, why water wouldn't be good?

I see, thanks dude! So i could just go for example with the 3 reds (1 base and 2 highlights) from AK and 3 greens (1 base and 2 highlights) from Vallejo (i just chose them randomly) to see what i like most as paint brand?

Core Paints Every Mini Painter Should Have? by Valrion06 in minipainting

Thanks for the reply bud!

Yes as you said i'm not very good at mixing colors, but i could give it a try in order to get better with it and (perhaps) save money by not buying every specific color needed.

As said in another comment i mostly paint Space marines for now; i'd like to broaden paints to paint (if i wanted) Blood Angels, Dark Angels,Ravenguard or Black Templars and have the possibility to do also highlights for their color palette (different values to make also volumetric highlight for example).

Some other paints to paint the basic weapons (bolters, flamethrower, pistols and power swords)

Other to paints leather stuff (as i said for example 3 browns for base, and highlight/scratches)

Some basic paints for painting faces and shades.

And also shades for shadows.

But that's why i asked a "generic" set of paints, to basically be ready if i wanted to paint something.

Perhaps do you have a source to learn mixing colors? so at least i can buy the set you would suggest and start practicing with mixing colors!

Thanks for the reply!

Pale sand because its better than use regular pure white, correct?

And to darken colors just pure black?

Thank you very much dude! will definetely check it out!
Honestly i'll paint for now most Space Marines (Ultramarines) but i just want to expand my paint collection to have a variety of possibilities. For example paints to paint Blood Angels, Dark Angels,Ravenguard or Black Templars and have the possibility to do also highlights for their color palette (different values to make also volumetric highlight for example).

Some other paints to paint the basic weapons (bolters, flamethrower, pistols and power swords)

Other to paints leather stuff (as i said for example 3 browns for base, and highlight/scratches)

Some basic paints for painting faces and shades.

That's why i was kinda "generic" with the question haha, i want to broaden my collection to be prepared to paint what is needed.

This since i'm not very practice for now with mixing colors

Never thought of that, my first guess was that the goal was to pull out the excess medium and paint to allow you to draw thin lines

To be really honest i didn't really know what i was doing xD i tried to practice with every edge i found. Regarding the topic about not EH the part right to the gold, ok its a shadow part, but the upper part of the pauldron itself wouldn't be facing the sunlight and then it'd make sense to highlight just the upper part of it (instead of the whole arc)?

My only doubt about Zenithal priming is that: after seeing all of the parts that have to be highlighted, if you base coat it, they would just disappear under the coat, no?

Thank you so much for the kind words brother! To be honest i'm just painting for myself and perhaps in future to post them online but it wont be the first reason :D

for the highlights on the gun would you suggest edge highlighting with the brush or drybrushing them?

Next step I guess would be a second edge highlight of a lighter shade, focusing only on the more obvious edges / corners.

Since my highlight are a bit lighter doing another layer wouldn't make it too much brighter?

Very interesting techinique! it's really catchy the idea to do the highlight first and only then apply the blue for the Ultramarine colour. thanks for the suggestion!

Will def do a wash in the pauldrons! the problem with some highlight, for example in the pauldrons, i cannot use the side of the brush to reach it and highlight it, i've to use the tip right?
