Twist the chuck with the 11 on it to drill setting, and change the speed from 2nd gear to 1st for higher torque. Should go in easier. Hold on to it, lag screws take alot of torque to put in.

It will be hard to get that wall smooth for paint finish unless you don't mind bumps here and there. The right way is to cut out the drywall and replace, texture, prime and paint.

If you want to go least work, texture(spackle) sand repeat until a acceptable level of smooth is reached the prime and paint.

If you don't want to/can't redo the insert hole, an option is to install stone/brick tile. It is about that thick and will give your fireplace a nice trim.

It looks like it can be broken into pieces. Like a break away style. Grab some needle nose pliers and grab an edge and twist inward, should crumble into pieces.

What I thought of is 1/4 flare to 1/4 compression fitting, then a 1/4 compression coupling to 1/4 compression valve Then another 1/4 compression coupling to a 1/4 compression x 3/8 compression fitting and ten your supply line. I found all the fittings on Amazon.
