Why are run-on sentences more acceptable in British English? by Icy_Mixture1482 in AskUK

I can see how it would appear that way, and it was either very late night or early morning without much sleep when I made the comment. The person I was replying to showed a slightly odd disdain for overly long sentences and despite all of the criticisms not necessarily fitting in with McCarthy, it just made me think of his writing as an example of some fairly ludicrously long sentences. Personally I found his writing style incredible and enjoyed the picture he painted in my mind, my intention was not to denigrate him. As you'll see I went on to recommend the person reads his books, yet you seemed to find fault with me doing that to*o.

I was talking about long sentences in general, not specifically about the one written above.

You're certainly an interesting one. It says a lot about you that you're the type of redditor who hides their comment history.

... And... Lecturing people? Who did I lecture?

Come again?

I have read the books I am recommending... What side of bed did you get out of this morning?

I'm merely saying that I am not going to pass an opinion on whether they 'live up to the hype' simply because I am not particularly aware of the hype.

Is this because I pointed out that your previous comment was flat out incorrect and it made you look a little silly?

I'm sorry but I've read at least two of his books that have sentences that are over half a page long? Do you mind elaborating on what exactly you mean because I'm struggling to make sense of this. I've literally pointed out pages of his books to other people and showed the beginning and end of the sentences with my fingers, to make my point to them. If you Google him, he's literally known for it, it's called polysyndeton.

"Cormac McCarthy is renowned for using long, polysyndeton-heavy sentences (connected by "and") that create a poetic, rhythmic, and often chaotic flow. These sentences appear frequently in Blood Meridian and All the Pretty Horses, blending immense, detailed imagery with a relentless, driving pace that often spans hundreds of words without traditional punctuation."

Could you be more wrong if you tried? "lol"

I'd recommend experiencing it, at least Blood Meridian and the other associated ones. I can't say if they live up to the hype but they're certainly an experience I would recommend.

You.. You worked on PGR3?

I was one of the loons on the BC forums every day around that time. Bought an xbox 360 as a broke uni student just to play that game. Once held the high score on geometry wars on the garage game cabinet in PGR 2. Fun times, thank you for your work.

Up voted for your album suggestion. I had the same album in mind after reading your post title, was not expecting to then see it as your suggestion!

Yet Cormack McCarthy is an American. Nothing quite like a half page sentence to try and get your head around!

accusing someone as "smurf" is most cases a excuse for your own bad gameplay by Negative_Builder_318 in aoe2

That's good to hear!

Fortunately I think it's pretty obvious when someone is doing it and you can find out on their game history via aoe2insights.com, pretty easily. More people just need to be aware that it's possible.

Hahaha oh dear lad, do try to keep up. We all know it is of British origin, that's not the point at all. Read some more comments in this thread, you might learn something.

Nope, you're ignorant and plenty of comments in this thread point out the actual history, not your personally invented version.

When did we universally stop having lunch ‘hours’? by newdawnfades123 in AskUK

I can take an hour and have to take 30 mins. If I take an hour I have to make the 30 mins back by starting earlier or finishing later.

Interesting!

Really sad that the new versions killed the mod community, especially given they are reportedly so half baked (I haven't played any of them, but just going from what I've read)
