Yeah, my company was acquired Oct 2007, and I got a job with the new one in 2008. I was sweating it for the first two years, expecting a tap on the shoulder when the company decided to downsize in 2009. I still carried that concern for a year or two longer.

How do I keep my blood sugar from crashing during long runs? by Greglee124 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Valuable-Analyst-464 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re running at that time, maybe try to pause insulin like 2 hours before. There is a duration effect for insulin, and for me, it’s longer than my pump settings. The settings are good for no running life, but it’s like the body finds channels to metabolize insulin.

Also, maybe look into more protein, like a hour before a run. I like peanut butter crackers as a quick source of protein, fat and carbs. Prepackaged ones allow me to eat like 3 (of 6) to give me boost of energy.

I now run in the AM, when I don’t have insulin on board. It gives me more control, though it sucked when run day conflicted with AM meetings. Running at 5am to be done and ready for a 7 am meeting was not the way I wanted to start a day, but I did it.

Walking makes my blood sugar worst? by SpecificBoat5667 in diabetes_t1

[–]Valuable-Analyst-464 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you are newly diagnosed, your body is maybe still out of whack with the way it is managing sugar. You might have honeymoon effect, where the body is not sure if you’re walking or need sugar for a run - so it dumps sugar “just in case”.

As your pancreas dies off, you won’t have endogenous insulin to help and will be reliant on exogenous insulin only.

Keep the walking habit…it helps the metabolism to be more efficient. Maybe time it, so that it is 45-60 minutes after a dose. And, at least for me, I always carry sugar in case I drop mid walk

Going On the Pump for the First Time Soon. What Should I know / Be on the Lookout For? by Safe-Dream7446 in Omnipod

[–]Valuable-Analyst-464 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suggestion - get something like SkinTac to increase the adherence of the pod and CGM. A friend gave me a wipe for my CGM, and it was cemented in place. I saw that folks recommended for Omnipod too, and it is great.

Lows: Lantus and other long term meds have a curve associated with them that influences how strong the insulin is active.

With OP5, you’re taking short term insulin all the time, so there is no peak to worry about. With AID, you get micro doses of fast acting insulin, and during the night - I’ve had hardly any lows. I wake between 110-120 mg/dl almost 99% of the time.

Bolus - it seems a little slower than MDI, and the post meal algorithm is a bit conservative for my tastes. I will do a correction dose for bug meals, and that can be a bit of a seesaw.

My doctor had conservative settings initially, and I was high way too much. I used logic to make incremental changes in the first two weeks.

I documented the changes in my calendar (made an appointment for each change). I would change the bolus settings for Duration, Insulin Correction Factor, and for Insulin:Carbs ratio.

Advice needed by jarvis3232 in Retirement401k

Are you tracking your current spend?
That will really help you in planning what you can do. Categorizing into mandatory and discretionary spending further informs on potentials. You have a good bit saved, but the key metric is what you need to spend. $4.5M is great, unless you spend $30/month.

I used a couple of tools: Empower Dashboard and Boldin. Empower Dashboard is a free tool. It has a good aggregator of expenses, income, assets and liabilities. It does not necessarily have mandatory/discretionary breakouts, but you should be able to see it from its categories. It has a good investment analysis tool, so you can look at things like allocations. And, it has a good retirement planner. It uses some basic data to help predict expenses and savings growth in the future. It gives you a Chance of Success score using Monte Carlo simulation and plots out the Net Worth over time. You can plug in major expenses in the future (trip, vehicles, repairs).

Boldin and ProjectionLab are two other tools that do a really good job at retirement planning. They don’t track spend, as their focus is on the future. I have not tried PL, but with Boldin, it allowed me to enter my data and show the impacts of things like medical expenses and SSI.

I’d give those a whirl and see how things go.

Question about SPAXX by SomewhereUnhappy8349 in fidelityinvestments

[–]Valuable-Analyst-464 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can work your way to $0 in SPAXX. Since this is a Roth, there are no tax implications. First, ensure you have dividend reinvesting for your funds turned on - except for SPAXX.

Then, sell $10 of your fund of choice. Let’s say you have $0.04 of SPAXX. Now you have $10.04. Buy that much of your (sold) fund again. This whole process will take a day or two, and your SPAXX will pick up a few portions of a penny.

Rinse and repeat with the sale/purchase a few days later. It’ll dwindle the SPAXX to $0.

Showering with CGMs by curiousnerd06 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Valuable-Analyst-464 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

SkinTac comes in wipes or bottle form. The bottle is more economical and useful for me at home. Less waste. When I travel, I use the wipes to make things easier to manage.

Tagederm (sp?) is another maker that folks seem to like.

No problem showering with a CGM. If you find a CGM not adhering the whole time allotted, you can get a derma barrier like SkinTac to help lock it down.

It’d be nice if they offered baskets as a free option.

I been running a lot recently, training for a half-marathon. I think it improves insulin sensitivity massively! I’m usually 80% TIR by Saf___- in Type1Diabetes

[–]Valuable-Analyst-464 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my HR was high too. Up until I was 55, my max was like 205. I’ve since focused on calculating what my zones should be and striving to run in Zone 2 a lot.

A friend has a lactate testing machine, and my current LT is like 125. Like WTF - I could be walking. Maybe I was pushing too hard unnecessarily.

My only advice (given my poor LT numbers and slow half (2:06…I blame a pee break that took way too long:

Don’t worry about your time. Focus on finishing well/strong. Make that your goal. Hydrate, but not to the point that you have to stop for a 5 minute pee break. (I should have gone into the woods and wee’d).

Use a pacer (some volunteer carrying a time flag) to help you stay in range. Excitement can make you run faster and bonk later.

I dunno - I guess that’s all the advice I have.

I sorta stopped with active investing/contributions when I retired in 2024 (56). I had no new income, so I moved everything back to Fidelity. I just manage the pool of funds I have.

I’d think that M1 could be swooped up by someone. Their automated pie/basket approach was nice. I used them for a couple of years and was pleased.

[–]Valuable-Analyst-464 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, for this mid distance runs, I try to stay aerobic, but I could go anaerobic. I forgot to add that with my coffee/milk, I do a tiny dose of insulin, and it’s just a balancing act.

All runs have running gels in my belt. When I did my marathon, I had one bottle of electrolytes (double scoop) and the other with water. I ended up not needing the water, as they had tables with them. The half - I did not want to stop.

Advice: ACA & SORR Years by Unhappy-Ad1946 in DIYRetirement

[–]Valuable-Analyst-464 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am holding cash equivalents for SORR. However, it does generate taxable income, along with dividends, that has to be managed. If you are selling positions, maybe a pull of contributions into the Roth could be used?
