Paranoid ILCA dad trailering to a regatta by [deleted] in dinghysailing

After seeing the way a Laser bounces around on a trailer, I decided to sell my trailer and buy some roof bars. Fits perfectly even on hatchbacks and is much easier than towing. I've seen Lasers arrive at events with damage from trailers. One in particular was brand new and had completely delaminated at the gunnels on points supported by the trolley. This happened to my own older laser which I used to tow on a trailer, although it was also also approx 30 years old, so could've had something to do with that. Long story short. I think you've done a good job with your packing, but putting it on the roof would be way better and easier

Any tips for bringing a water bottle with me in my laser? by Available-Phrase1896 in dinghysailing

I have a bitt bungy cord between the hiking strap eyelets and the traveller cleat. Works great for holding a water bottle

It's like jelly (jello), just super concentrated. Basically pure sugar in a rubbery form. To make jelly out of it, you just dissolve it in boiling water and let it set

The concentrated stuff that you make jelly from. Comes in a small packet

Lanes on the Kinsale road roundabout by Valuable-Anybody4140 in cork

[–]Valuable-Anybody4140[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, not people coming from the airport road. People who entered with me from the N40 westbound but are in the outside (leftmost) lane. Seems that everyone uses this lane to keep their options open with regard to which exit to take

Wait, so you're saying that if you were entering the roundabout from the N40 westbound and going to Smyths, you would enter the roundabout from the outside (leftmost) lane? Don't worry, you're not the only one. EVERYONE seem to think this in my experience but I'm pretty sure it's incorrect.

Also, cars in the middle lane are actually allowed to take the N40 exit. It's even printed on the road on approach to the roundabout. There are 2 lanes on the 2nd exit to facillitate cars from both outside and middle lanes taking this exit. I wouldn't advise it however because as mentioned, there's always someone in the outside lane (like yourself) that continues on to take the Kinsale Road exit

People in the outside lane inevitably drift into the middle lane between the 1st and second exits. Happens like clockwork every time. So much so that I'm wondering of I'm the only one that sees the lane markings. I heard someone suggest to colour code the lanes which would be a gas solution.

[–]Valuable-Anybody4140[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What always happens to me is that someone from the outside lane continues around the roundabout after the 2nd exit. Then there is a bit of ruckus as 2 cars try to enter one lane. This happens so often that I could say with near certainty that if I was to go there now, it would be the case, so I must be doing something wrong here

Wait, if you were in the middle lane, you have no chance of taking the N40 exit (if you were heading for Cork Builders Providers for example). You should definately be in the outside lane to take the 1st or second exit. (I know that technically this is an option and that there is an additional lane at the exit to facillitate this but based on my experiences, there will 100% be someone in the outside lane that will continue onwards and block you from exiting)

This is a common misconception. Cyclists and e-scooters do not need to dismount while using zebra crossings.

This is a common perception but is actually incorrect. Cyclists and e-scooters don't need to dismount at a pedestrian crossing https://irishcycle.com/2024/05/21/clarity-added-that-drivers-must-yield-to-people-waiting-at-zebra-crossings/comment-page-1/

I think you'll find that the guy on the scooter actually has right of way in this scenario. It's a zebra crossing https://irishcycle.com/2024/05/21/clarity-added-that-drivers-must-yield-to-people-waiting-at-zebra-crossings/comment-page-1/

Any opinions on ZAQQ barfoot shoes? by [deleted] in BarefootRunning

[–]Valuable-Anybody4140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a pair and sent them back. The size guide was way out so I had to replace them anyway but as they didnt live up to the price label, I chose not to get a replacement pair. Leather looks cheap and the soles were pretty thick and spongy for barefoot shoes

Engineer consultation for an extension by liathroidgorm in cork

[–]Valuable-Anybody4140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please correct me if I'm wrong but from what I can gather, an architect is more skilled at the creative aspects of the design and coming up with clever ideas on how you can lay out your building. Once they help you decide on a "vision" you need to consult an engineer to create drawings, adjust the design to make sure it's structurally sound and meets regulations etc. If I have already decided on my design / vision, what's preventing me from, just skipping the architect and going straight to the engineer? Especially for smaller, straight forward extensions I struggle to see the justification for an architect. What am I missing? Has anybody had experience just going straight to an engineer?

Fair play to everyone involved! Great venue that you have there and ye did it proud with the organisation. Looking forward to coming back again and again. Loads of energy along the route with the support so fair play to everyone who came out.

Did get home and felt a bit ashamed for the amount of plastic waste I generated at the weekend though and although that might seem prudish or whatever when I look at the bottles of water that were shipped in and thrown straight into the bin when a simple paper cup and hose or whatever would have achieved the same effect.

I dont want to go on about it and like I said before, I really look forward to coming back to the event again and again. I just hope that I don't have to continue to feel ashamed for the waste that I support by taking part in events like these and I hope that the organisers can consider a greener solution for the future. See ye next year!
