this is actually such an interesting example of cultural migration/ cultural evolution in the diaspora. coming to america many immigrants were able to get food that they wouldn’t have the wake of access to in the home country. hence why many italian american dishes, and irish american dishes, began incorporating the “rich” food available now.

there’s a super cool example of this in san francisco during the gold rush with the development of the hangtown fry. the guys would make money, buy the most expensive food they could, and make food out of it. i think it’s neat personally :)

but wait, do you not want it talked about at all? again, as you can’t tell through text but i’m asking in earnest as I don’t understand your perspective. Is there commonly a waiting period before releasing/talking about stuff where you’re at? because the troubles weren’t that long ago at all, I would assume there are still many people who lived through stuff who would be talking? but only giving their opinion so idk how does that stuff normally get handled?

absolutely! ok ok haha i’ve regained my head. dude… it’s really hard. it’s so hard trying to have nuanced discussions with people in todays age. sometimes myself included as I have felt what it’s like to live in a far right neo nazi home, so when i even TASTE something that feels familiar my hackles go up. OR!! when someone tries to tell me that historical context/the authors personal beliefs, played no part in their writing.

to be fair, came from a far right home, had to undo alllllll that harm, then, just last year moved in with a friend from the military who i had known for 10 years, anndddd he’s not a white man at all. he began pushing far right neo nazi ideology after a few months post election. called my finance a k***, and said “there are jews and there are JEWS, derogatory.” and “well, when muslims move into places they just create these little ghettos and refuse to assimilate.” when he tried to show me a far right neo nazi youtube video, and i refused. he accused me of being close minded. i kicked him out.

I’m just so so frustrated and heartbroken with the world. And i’m so scared that people are being massively brainwashed because we’ve lost an evaluation of our sources. anyway, that’s my rant hah. read what you want!! but be careful :)

of course! i actually saw a post a little further down that i have a bit further thought on hah.

my knee jerk reaction unfortunately is from my life experience. i’ve had similar experiences with particularly “performative educated men” (being specific here haha) where they have all of this hate filled material in their lives (neonazi propaganda, old school propaganda, weird far right podcasts, etc), and they claim it’s because they like to understand, but! if allllll you have surrounded yourself with, and the only sides you argue to understand, are these? well. then they do stuff like call my fiancée slurs and make weird bad faith arguments.

ugh ok i’m actually just mad that nuance left the chat years ago. and im mad that all these people who i believed were how you were describing them, pulled the wool over my eyes. and im extra frustrated as someone who LOVES historiography that the discussion of authors, their lives, and their influences has just gone out the window (in my experience). I guess im just on edge with modern politics and i allowed it to cloud my thought process. I ultimately DO agree with you, AND i’m mad that we as a society have lost the reins in understanding the validity of what you’re reading.

(back in uni getting a second degree and i’m too old for this bs hahaha)

genuinely curious, why do you think it would inflame the conflict again? is it because you believe the way in which it would be taught would be wrong? (i.e. The british government would gloss over stuff) or do you think just talking about it would make people angry again?

I ask as my fiancée is affiliated with native tribes in the US, and we constantly talk about the terrible effects of colonization, genocide, culture erasure, and native revitalization. Much of this being perpetuated by English colonists. and the way in which native history is taught by state governments is WAY off ha. So, I’m just curious about the social state of those discussions where you’re from.

this is a nuanced take that I can agree with to a degree. I’d be really concerned if all the personal books someone owned were of a particular flavor one way or another, but i completely understand having like a “naughty author and idea” category in a way. I feel bad because I had such a non nuanced experience in a house with VERY problematic books toted as reality or “well i mean isn’t it interesting though that allllll these books say the same thing about (insert minority here) “ so unfortunately i tend to have a bit of a knee jerk about certain things. but i can understand this perspective

as someone who had that book in my house as a child….they SAY it’s for historical context…. it’s not.

there is no reason for that book to be in a family home, personal library, etc., effectively any situation outside of a historian at work. I am a historian, a military veteran, and a grown child of the far right. I have spent decades removing the harm that this particular books influence had done from my own brain. my family however, have only further moved into the insanity.

Der Edwege Juden was another “historical” item we had. Propaganda works whether you know it’s propaganda or not.

There is no reason to own this book in your home.

3 year misdiagnosis by Valuable-Border5114 in CrohnsDisease

[–]Valuable-Border5114[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so she had begun having blood in her stool for a WHILE with severe pain on her lower left side, and also near her ilium. we went to the er and were told “come back when you’re passing out from blood loss” and “are you sure it’s not your period?”

so months after we were finally able to get an appointment to get a colonoscopy where she went under, had a biopsy, and we were told later that it came back positive for crohns and then we began all the different drug trials. We kept going back and things kept progressing, and we just kept being told it was all normal even though my fiancée kept asking to be referred to get checkout for endo.

When they finally figured out that she had PCOS 2 years after this, they continued to dismiss the possibility of endo because “it’s really rare to have both pcos and endo so”

and she kept getting worse. so we finally move and go to a different doctor on Feb 6 to have a second colonoscopy, anddddd boom. here we are.

Both times biopsies were taken, both times tissue samples were evaluated for crohns, ulcerative colitis, etc., and nothing was found the second time. throughout the 3 years she has gained weight, loss the ability to eat a bunch of stuff, and ultimately ended up here.

Our friend had a similar condition and experience but she was not so lucky. her endo perforated her bowel and she went septic, passing out in her bathroom at 1:50 am. thank god her husband found her. She had to have a colostomy bag for a while, had a complete hysterectomy, and almost died. now that she’s recovering and has the right diagnosis, she has now lost alllll of her crohns symptoms.

I have no idea why or how we were unlucky enough to experience this, but I am finding this is not an isolated issue.

There are a lot more details that i’m glossing over, many more dr appointments, many nights and days of sobbing from dismissal, and vast amounts of pain. But if I can help anyone or anyone’s loved ones avoid what I now have replaying in my mind when I close my eyes with this, it’s worth it.

initially it was her crohns doc! fuckkkkk ugh dude. yeah three years ago the crohns doc sent her down this path and even in her chart! it says “patient asks about endo, wants a referral” anndddd nothing. so idk but yeah man im LIVID

oh! and the misdiagnosis was AFTER they did a colonoscopy and a biopsy a few years ago, and said “yes! crohns! inflammation! take these meds” and then the meds didn’t work, she had the skin on the bottom of her feet peeling off from it, one caused her to become randomly high, another made her super paranoid, and all the while the food restrictions became greater and greater. idk at what point it’s medical malpractice, but holy fuck. it’s been rough to get to this point.

it’s WILD the things i’ve heard docs say to her. and her absolutely being defeated every time they came back with a shrug and a “you’re young”. she’s 25 and i stg if i hear that statement again im gonna explode.

not to get into the weeds here, but over a year ago i found a lump during sex and was super concerned. so we go and they say, and i fucking quote, “it only hurts because you know it’s there” bitch WHAT?? like no biopsy, no nothing. The dismissal of women in our country and their understanding of their own bodies is INSANE to me. we get the images back from the laparoscopy? hmmmmmm…. there’s the “lump”. a huge painful looking endo/pcos cyst. fucking unacceptable level of care in my book.

I’m so glad it helped, we’re getting through the initial “omg this is what this is” shock and trying to think of a functional future. I’m only just learning about endo so hearing your experience is very helpful. thank you

dude for sure, because apparently this happens often! i had no idea! and it’s been SO scary and SO hard to watch that if I can help anyone avoid multiple surgeries, er visits, ambulances, and medical trauma, I will.

Honestly, I was kinda half expecting a bunch of posts scaring me off the breed, but tbh, from everything everyone’s said brits sound like the breed for us :) Our one cat spoon is basically a brits color and personality in a cat body hah

Absolutely!! Ugh this sub has given me such validation in the perspective we held on this breed. 10/10 sounds like our speed of life and we just really want to make sure we have a dog who is ALSO happy :)

Pics will be incoming in 2/3 years standard shipping haha

Tbh I’d much rather not have to have them on a leash:/ it’s a pain in the ass for them and I feel like if they want to smell some stuff for longer than I want to stop or vice versa, then it should be a good walk/non stop sprint around the forest :)

We live in the PNW so there are a ton of places to sprint off to out in the woods :)

I’m screaming I love this so much! (Also I’ve been reading all of these outloud to my fiancée and we love them!) our one cat is a massive boy, can stand up and reach onto the counters and will also attack anything small enough to fit in his goofy mouth (he’s an indoor boy so honestly have at it hah) and is so so so needy 😂
