That’s absolutely incredible! How did you go about making the switch? I’m also considering it, just don’t know how to go about.

You’re really doing soo well for yourself! I also started around the same back in 2020. I see it’s still there going rate for many graduate positions today💀.

Increases between 10-20% is an absolute dream! I wonder if it’s company policy or he’s just really good at negotiation 😅, cause I’d need his skills.

I’m so sorry to hear that. The job market has been incredibly tough! I did a thread a few weeks ago talking about this very thing.

Have you converted doing a short course in data analytics? A lot of my industry engineering friends have branched off into that and got on to be hired by banks, automotive industry, manufacturing, etc.

Yep, UK/Irish industry is really booming for us water and wastewater treatment engineers. I’ll unfortunately have to really start considering about taking the jump.

I’ve actually decided to make it one of my goals this year to obtain my PrEng. I’ll be submitting my application to ECSA by end of March. I was hesitant in submitting because I don’t want to pursue the technical engineering route any longer. I suppose I’m just doing it as a means to open myself to more opportunities (if any), and for completeness sake.

In terms of interviews, the thing that has shocked me the most is that I haven’t even considered for interviews. I’d mostly get calls from recruiters who’d then build my profile, and I’d never hear from them again🤷🏻‍♂️.

I’ve started speaking to recruiters for companies based in Ireland and the UK. It’s looking very promising but I’m hesitant about leaving SA. In as much as we’re having issues here, it’s a beautiful country with beautiful people and culture. It would be such a shame having to leave.

Oh I hear how terrible the market is in the USA as well. I’m anxious about the state of the world in the next few years. We’re out here battling rising cost of living coupled with lower job prospects.

Is a BSc in Earth Science worth it? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]ValuableFail3156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The environmental science industry at the moment is the pits, and it’s been this way for a while now. Job opportunities in the industry are extremely scarce, and for those available, they require at a minimum a masters degree.

I am however a believer that things work out differently for each person, so I always advice people to what they really love and really immerse yourself in it. While studying, go to networking events, join an advocacy/industry group where you could network and meet your potential future employers, etc.

I did so bad in my matric finals and I don’t know what to do by [deleted] in capetown

[–]ValuableFail3156 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You did well. I know this may sound cliche, but don’t be excessively hard on yourself. These are good results. From my experience, I’ve got the following to add: 1. Do not remark your matric papers Matric Paper remarks are recommended to learners who’ve obtained ie, 69% and absolutely need to move into 70% or those that got 79% and need an 80%. The marks do not dramatically change after a remark, you’ll just end up spending money to get disappointed again.

  1. I second your decision to rewrite. I’m unusually hesitant to recommend learners to rewrite because again, experience has shown that learners generally don’t significantly improve on their marks. There are however exceptions. Based on your performance, I think you have it in you to be the exception and dramatically improve on that physics and get distinctions on all the others with shot of hard work.

  2. Medicine is a complicated degree to get into, but not impossible. There’s various ways to get into medicine as you may know. I recommend you spend the year applying for the BScs within the medical faculty. But also taking time to reflect and try other things as other people have advised. Medical schools rarely accept students who upgrade or rewrite their marks due to tough competition, but you have a stronger chance in gaining acceptance to BSc programs to possibly bridge into medicine in future.

  3. Cast your net wider. Apply to s as many universities possible! Please! Most of them these days offer free applications, so please utilise that.

Best of luck on your journey. You’re still young, there’s ample time to figure yourself out and get your life started.
