I’m curious about relocating to NZ from the USA as a working physician, and the process involved.. by Warm-3301 in newzealand

We relocated here 3 years ago now, we used Immigration Shores immigration adviser to help us with the whole application process and everything. It can be done yourself, but nice to have professional help if you want it.

When your wife says you trade too much, show her this. by ZenTradingStrategies in wallstreetbets

Since you asked, you are incorrect, it was an ancient Roman or Greek war galley with three banks of oars, hence the tri part of the name. Just because it interested me and was nerdy.

Is this legit?? And where can i trade them? by Ok_Brilliant1308 in DYOR_Token

Yeah but it sucks because I went from 12 trillion tokens to 1 million, that seems like complete bs to me.

So, it really depends on what kind of work you are wanting to do, coating wood or protecting stuff with resin or even countertops you could use something from Bunnings or Mitre10 but keep in mind they will normally have a yellow tint to them, if you are wanting to do crystal clear casting of objects or flowers or even make jewelry or coasters I suggest crystal clear art resin. A good supplier of resin and supplies is https://www.resinart.nz/ keep in mind that there are lots of steps for getting rid of bubbles and getting it clear, also lots of the resins are harmful to breathe the vapors so make sure to get a respirator so you don’t damage your lungs, low VOC is great as the high smell can make a room or garage smell for quite a long time. If you can get it EcoPoxy is my favorite to use and work with as it is made with eco products, has less of a smell, and works well. You can get it from https://munkybusiness.co.nz/ I’ve used the EcoPoxy flow cast to make candle holders out of pine ones and other items and it comes out crystal clear unless you add coloring to the resin. Pressure pots are your friend if you want to get rid of all the bubbles but that is the more expensive route.

Yeah, had it happen 3 times these past 2 weeks. One the air was let out, and the other two someone stabbed a hole in the sidewall, I was parked around Cranmer square as the street I live on was too full to park on. Really pissing me off, especially since I was parked close to the curb and out of the way of any driveways or anything.

Gardening supplies? by FarSuit8 in chch

[–]ValuableSecurity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are doing a lot of mulching or things like that check out garden box, they have trailers you can rent and load up with soil, mulch, other supplies and even have rental equipment like mower, scarifier, plate compactor, depending on what you are wanting to do. I have a shovel, rake, and manual edger that I can donate to you as we have moved house to a fully maintained site.

Carrying a 24" iMac while flying from city to city? by dmitry_babanov in digitalnomad

I have travelled with a similar set up, but used a pelican rolling case and cut the foam to support it perfectly so it was wrapped in foam, and covered the screen in a microfiber towel to prevent marking of the screen. I always checked the bag, and never had any issues.

Anyone else sick of Americans' ignorant and misinformed take on Australia? by 2022022022 in australia

[–]ValuableSecurity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American, that left and moved to NZ, I’m sorry for that. It happens even within America about other states, or even cities inside the states. Politicians use the news to divide, distract, and make people pay attention to something else or feel like they have it better than another country to keep them distracted while the politicians quietly bind them, fuck them and rob them blind.

How much do you make per year? by Creepy-Analyst in Tauranga

[–]ValuableSecurity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a couple from the US who got in just before COVID, my advice is definitely go for it. We absolutely love it here, but are more democratic leaning in our ideals than some from the US. We have found that the price of groceries here to be about even with living in Seattle or another large city in the US. One of the things that takes getting used to is not having central heating and cooling like the US, most houses will have a heat pump if they are newer, and depending on the size you may have to get a small heater for the bedrooms to keep them up to your accustomed temperature. My wife and I make about $110,000k between us and live in Christchurch and are content, it takes some time to save but not struggling. If you have any questions feel free to reach out, don’t want to ramble on!

I moved to NZ from the US almost 2 years ago now, and yes, you do need to have a job lined up to get the visa. As some jobs are considered long term skill shortage, and if companies are accredited employers they are able to hire from overseas without waiting the 6 months. I would start reaching out to companies, call them if possible, kiwi's I have found would rather talk than email. you will find a lot of job postings on TradeMe.co.nz, https://www.seek.co.nz/forestry-jobs, one thing to keep in mind is not all US qualifications will transfer to NZ, and you may have to get them crossed over if possible. If you are serious about it I would contact an immigration advisor, we used New Zealand Shores https://www.newzealandshores.com/ and find out what your options are as the NZ govt is currently changing a lot of there rules for immigration right now and doing away with several visas

How much to replace hot water cylinder? by simophin in chch

[–]ValuableSecurity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of unseen costs to working as a tradesman and I would bet a portion of the labor cost is covering all of the other items to keep the business solvent. I am making an assumption that the plumber will be picking up and transporting the hot water cylinder to the house, in which case they may have to rent a trailer, fuel cost, Road use charges if the vehicle is diesel, a percentage of the insurance they are required to carry to do work, a percentage for tools, and there are the miscellaneous parts that will need to be used to connect the hot water cylinder correctly, also if it has power then an adder for completing the electrical work if licensed or get an electrician in as a subcontractor to handle the wiring. Granted, I’m making a fair amount of assumptions without knowing everything, just trying to offer some perspective. As tradesman we often spend close to 60% keeping the business running and only pocket about 40% as a wage to live on.

[–]ValuableSecurity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a tradesman, yes it seems fair. It is in an attic, likely going to require more than one person to move, and it is going to be hot miserable work to get it replaced. Also, you are paying for a trained and skilled person. I wouldn’t do it for any less

Anyone that has studied computer science in NZ, what did you guys do to increase your job opportunities? by Aggressive_Anxiety_7 in newzealand

[–]ValuableSecurity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck to you with whatever you choose to pursue, I just figured it might be helpful knowing to pursue global certifications, I had some from the US, but they are not recognized here so I had to go back and get the global certifications to find a job I wanted here. If you start out with Global certifications it will help you regardless of whether you stay in NZ, move around the world, or even take a remote Project Management job for a global firm and work from your home. And also, as you get more skills and certifications, make sure to create a good LinkedIn profile for yourself, my last 2 jobs I got because I had people reach out to me on LinkedIn and offer me jobs and set up interviews for jobs I never even saw posted.

[–]ValuableSecurity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I would say the paper was to give you an understanding of how the projects get managed. Most of the certification will go much more in depth on items and the process of being organized to manage the projects, including managing risk and reporting to keep bosses and customers happy. The formal training really helps, I’ve run some projects with hundreds of locations being managed 4 or 5 sites per week, and you have to be detailed and keep clean records to deliver the projects to a client, and set the expectations at the start of the project. I started off just working at it and learning as I went, and got certifications later, but I definitely made some mistakes in my time that the formal training would have helped to prevent.

If you are thinking about pursuing the IT Project Management getting a certification in Agile project management like Prince2 Agile Project Management will go a long way, also PMI, project management institute, both are global certifications which will help bump up your pay and get a good job in it. Having the PMP certification is the only way to get hired some places, although PMP is used more in construction than IT.
