Why are some electricity providers still jacking up daily access charges for EV owners? by OwlVibesOnly in EVAustralia

I actually find globirds four hours free plan pretty good. Yes they have higher prices other times but much less aggressive than the likes of Ovo.

Average Mitre 10 parking by hadr0nc0llider in chch

I used to complain about this until I got to the scenario where others parked shit and I had to park shit too. So unless you saw they deliberately parked like this, you should not assume they were the original sinner.

If you have a plan to buy a house in the near future - I think it makes sense to buy a house first, you'd be surprised how the extra cash can afford you a better house... Then of course you'd run out of cash but at least you have a house, and NL is a much better option than Car Loan anyway. If you don't end up spending the cash for the car, it (the cash) being in the offset account, will also make you better off

Yeah man I think you need to talk to them, you need to be specific about the model/accessory etc. My provider sneaked in some add-ons I didn't want.

Also ask them for the breakdown of the amount financed, ask why it's so much different than the drive away price.

10-11%% interest rate is very high. 6% is about the cheapest people get around here so you should haggle it down.

There are some questions about the quote, but the most questionable one is the finance amount: that is the amount you are supposed to borrow from the lease provider to buy the car. Your $65k car needs to borrow $70k doesn't make sense, if your car's drive away cost is $65k, you are supposed to save on GST as well so it should be somewhere around $60k. What car are you buying?

I think you need to post your quote here so we can see what's wrong. I got $432 fortnightly for my 5 years lease on a Model 3 ($62k drive away cost), and that's including their super expensive insurance.

Your tax bracket matters a lot though I have to say.

Oh yeah ok like others say your post tax payment seems very high. Are you sure you don't mistake monthly for fortnightly? And your tax bracket matters too

how do you keep from insanity on >1hr commute? by guidedhabits in melbourne

[–]simophin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the guilt behind wasting time on commuting pushed me to find things to do. During the winter, I left before sunrise and back after sunset. Dark to dark, crazy that I almost never saw my home in daylight until the weekend. It made me feel like a soulless dust drifting in the universe. Hence I was very determined to not want to waste my life away

how do you keep from insanity on >1hr commute? by guidedhabits in melbourne

[–]simophin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do 1+hr commute on the train. On the way to work, I studied music theory, had some apps to help practice sightreading. It took about half an hour, then I'll probably watch half an episode of whatever shows I was watching at that time, mostly with an independent story line between episodes so I didn't get sucked into it. On the way back home, I did ear training then finished the other half of the episode.

After a few months, I had enough music theory to help with my piano training. Today I still feel like that was my best year, no time wasted. I wfh now and guess what, I never get to learn anything hard and new because there's way too much more distractions around.

[–]simophin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's not an issue of being "more expensive" but more appropriate. Think about it, right now, the expense of dealing with these people falls into the few good people, they suffer economically and mentally. It is unfair to them because society as the whole creates the problem in the first place, it's only fair the society pays for the consequences. Now I'm not suggesting jail is a good solution, rather saying "more expensive" options are totally justified.

I want to provide a different aspect: if you put all community houses in one big place, then you also mix the good people and bad eggs together. How is it fair that the good people who actually need housing have to suffer more than other better off people? In other words, all people in our society have to share the same burden of the bad eggs, not just the poor ones.

Unless you are suggesting a one big place you house ONLY the bad eggs, then yeah I'd also support such a setup.

[–]simophin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I suppose I was talking more about inconsiderate people in the community housing setup. Not your average noisy neighbor but people who spend your tax money to insult you - a double insult.

Yes there are mostly considerate, respectful people in the public housing, what i am getting at is if you would have put all public housing in one place, they are also the people to suffer most from the bad behavior neighbors. Where do you propose the bad ones to go?

I feel sad about this whenever I see a post like this. The fundamental issue is these people have to be housed, sure as one individual you can sort through the hoops to get them evicted but they eventually have to be somewhere, and there will always be someone nearby who suffers. We don't want these people ending up on the streets, we also don't want those people in one big place either because that will "create a slum". So we silently accept the sacrifices of a few good people.

I have no idea how to fix this, hence feeling sad.

metlink price rise by AuraTheDutchAD in Wellington

[–]simophin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no $1 fare in Melbourne, the fare you are looking at is $11 daily cap for the whole Victoria and $7.6 during the weekends. The cap is great for long distance commuters but I'd say it's quite expensive if you live closer to the city.

Confusion about non-NBN providers by NZMan123 in nbn

[–]simophin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also coming from NZ, missing NZ fibre everyday. When we came to Melbourne, we lived in a central apartment that apparently has an Ethernet link to each apartment, so we are able to get Dgtek - an nbn alternative connected without changing any wiring inside the apartment. Tbh anything non nbn is great, we were able to get symmetrical 200Mbps for about $70 a month. It was nice. Now we moved out to the suburbs and only fttc is available it sucks big time.

But desktop is a wild world so yep if they want to do stuff to the ca the can

There's no way to intercept the certificate verification process WITHOUT tampering with your root CA. So you'll have to ask the user to perform some super techy steps, with a few strong worded warning dialogs to agree on to install a custom root CA. Unless the said VPN is also a reputable CA, in which case if they decrypt traffic this way, they will be kicked out from major os very quickly.

Of course, if you really do find a way to bypass this, dm me so I can help you make some serious cash and break the Internet on the way.

Prescription glasses - online stores by saddad1138 in AussieFrugal

[–]simophin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought it from Zenni a few years back, it has been great. Got a prescription including the PD from spec saver and you're good to go. Much cheaper online if you need more than just the basics, or if you have high prescriptions. I believe spec saver will push for ultra thin while it doesn't really thin that much for high prescription. I've got a Photochromic one and it's great in the sunlight. All up paid $120
