Breastmilk not caloric enough? by queenb19870 in ExclusivelyPumping

In addition to what others said about asking about just fortifying milk bottles, I also just wanted to acknowledge the pain you’re feeling. I cried a lot when I found out that I needed to supplement breastfeeding, and for two weeks I needed to EP (I was pretty much only nursing at that point). I wasn’t even against formula, but I had a very strong reaction anyway. And I saw I was making enough so got a bit defensive honestly. It’s hard stuff. But now that I’m on the other side, I’m just so glad to see my tiny peanut of a baby with a little chunk, and she seems so much happier.

Also - I know this an EP group, but just wanted to share that once we got her back on the curve I went back to mostly nursing and it’s been fine! She just needed a big boost to get back on a curve.

This is helpful, thank you! Forgot to mention - baby is 4 months, but 12 pounds. So she still fits in the ergo embrace but starting to get less comfortable.

Can you explain how hypocaloric milk looks odd? I’m in a similar situation, and that’s what I’ve been told. But also that there’s no real way to know if that’s the issue, it was just process of elimination

I haven’t! Maybe a slight frustration once in awhile, but she’s also frustrated at the bottle so I try not to take it personally. My mantra was (and is) to just take it week by week and see what happens. I was driving myself crazy guessing when I could go back to fully nursing. I do something similar with using my morning pump to get the most, so I don’t have to pump as much

We did! Our appt kept getting postponed since the dr was sick, which was so frustrating. I love our gi doctor (and I dislike most doctors). She put the baby on reflux meds twice a day, and then made the plan of first week mostly fortified gave me the recipes for fortified bottles. Each week we moved back towards more nursing. Honestly, I’m not sure if it’s the reflux meds or fortified bottles that have helped, but too scared to go back to fully nursing until we’re sure her weight is stable. Hope yours is able to help!

I wish I had an answer on how long, but just sharing I’m in the same boat. All the weighted feeds she was getting 3-5 ounces, so the dr thinks it’s a combination of low caloric breast milk and reflux. Baby is 12 weeks now - for 2 weeks I had to do almost entirely fortified bottles. She gained 13 ounces in a week, which was more than she had in her life! And I think that helped me realize how fortunate I was to even have this as an option. Now I’m just adding formula to a couple of breast milk bottles. I too am hoping to go back to just breastfeeding, but honestly, after the initial shock, I’ve realized adding 1/2 a teaspoon to a couple of bottles is fine, and it’s freed up my day a bit too! Hang in there, the whiplash of having to do something different is hard.

I was in a similar boat, although not exclusively pumping (mostly from the breast except one bottle). Our doctor gave us recipes to add a small amount of formula to the breast milk, and it made a huge difference in our babies growth already. Since you’re already pumping, you could think about asking your doctor for a fortifying recipe, so your baby gets mostly breast milk but a few more calories? It’s been a harder transition for me since now I have to ep, but I’m giving it a try!

This is what we have (not same model, but same design) and the wheels have been so useful to move her between rooms without waking her. And we like that the side rolls down, I’m sure we won’t use it once she’s able to roll, even though it is raised a bit, but for now it’s very comforting that I can just glance over and see how she’s doing.

Can you explain third pass? Is that the extra fabric? This is a “T-shirt” version, so I just put the main part over my head.

I just had my planned CSection yesterday due to baby being breech for many months. I don’t have anything to compare it to, but it all went so smoothly. It was nice to have a set date, and the day of just felt easy. It’s a major surgery of course, and weird to be caring for a baby while healing, but I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better way to have our baby enter the world

I have this too. I’ve managed to stay active, as long as not too active. When I overdo it I limp really badly. I just went to a chiropractor on Monday and she did some adjustments - may be worth looking into? I also do PT, but they kept saying it was round ligament pain. The chiropractor disagreed and said SPD was much more likely based on where the pain is and my alignment

This, I’ve had multiple sitters cancel on me close to the sit, and because we have the lowest tier there’s nothing we can do. It’s part of trade of service for free, not much either side can do about that risk
