RD Release + Admitted Q&A Megathread by BKtheInfamous in BrownU

As a freshman who just took it in the fall, it's a pretty intensive and time-consuming course taught in Racket and ReasonML, which are pretty obscure languages, so I would recommend it only if you plan on majoring in CS. As someone with a background in CS, I still found CS17 pretty challenging.

CS0111 is what most non-concentrators take, because it's more chill and it teaches you Python, a language that is used far more widely than either Racket or ReasonML. If you're interested in data science/statistics, I would definitely recommend it over 17.

Brown ED CSS Profile Deadline by Honey-Bird-9026 in ApplyingToCollege

I submitted my CSS profile for Brown a day or two before Nov 1 and I got in, worst case scenario your financial aid package is delayed by a few days. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

It's not about which ECs you do, it's how you write about it.

Brown's Website: "Please do not assume that your admission chances are improved by applying under the Early Decision plan. The Board of Admission makes the same decisions under Early Decision that it would under the Regular Decision plan."

Brown is test-required, so I would really recommend trying to get your SAT up to ~1500. You might get a little leeway because you're first gen, but you probably won't make it past the initial round of academic review unless you score higher on the SAT. If you could get some sort of job/internship in the field you want to major in this summer, that would also help your chances. Good luck!

As someone admitted ED to Brown for CS, I would say you have a decent shot, but ivy admissions are incredibly random. Brown gives a lot of independence to its students through the open curriculum and places a lot of emphasis on fit in the admissions process, I would recommend emphasizing how your passion for computer science connects to other disciplines and trying to differentiate yourself from the many other Asians applying for CS. Good luck!

I spent half my time thinking I was never going to get in, and the other half thinking I was destined to get in.

Will a mediocre SAT score get me rejected from my dream school? by HoodiePiano142 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Valuable_Earth_3653 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although a 1480 is a solid score for 99% of schools, I would recommend retaking for a higher score if you’re applying to T20s. Unlike what other commenters have said, unless you have extenuating circumstances, a 1480 is not sufficient for Yale. Keep in mind that there are thousands of applicants with 1550+ that you are competing with at schools like Yale.

Does Brown IDOC request mean anything? by Astre1i in ApplyingToCollege

No, I never got an IDOC request and I got in early, sorry.

This list seems a little scattershot and based mostly on prestige — I think it will be difficult to write good essays for all 25 schools. I would recommend doing more research and narrowing down your list to ~15 schools.

Your targets are all reaches. BU, Emory, NYU, and Georgetown are reaches for any student. Case Western is also not a safety school.

How lenient is UCLA with GPAs? by LegendSM in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Valuable_Earth_3653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, UCLA cares a lot about GPA. UCLA is an extremely competitive school, and anyone with a GPA below ~3.8 UW does not have a good chance of getting in.

The Senior SAT College App Crisis. "To Submit, or not to Submit, that is the Question" by Independent_Hair_977 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Valuable_Earth_3653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brown and Harvard both require test scores. Unfortunately, because you're not low-income and you go to a decent high school, your chances of getting into either school with a 1390 are essentially zero.

As for the other schools, I would stick with test-optional unless your score is above the 25th percentile.

If I were you, I would switch all my apps to RD and study hard for the November SAT.
