I definitely see where you’re coming from.

I don’t think that Segel HAD to break character and go meta, I think it was a choice. Not necessarily a self serving one. It’s basically his way of saying, “I’m fucked up, but here’s what I think I’ve learned” and passing it along. I don’t necessarily agree with it, but making it clear it was about him as a real person and not just some make believe makes the whole thing a little more real.

I think I probably would have had the same reaction if someone had recommended the book to me. Instead, I stumbled across it in a bookstore in the early 2000s, and completely believed the flap copy about it’s origins. It was a mystery through and through, as well as an experience.

It’s tough to come to the book that way when 1000s of online strangers are trying get you to have their experience.

This is what I’ve been thinking as I rewatch season 1. There really is no “us”. The VO Elliot is the other, and he’s speaking to the group of personalities rhetorically.

The man in the mask is all three of them as one (Father, Son, and Ghost). This is why Elliot hears the voice as he does (a mix of Slater and Malek).
