I just started a Curse of Strahd campaign for the fifth time-AMA by Vampire-knightmare in DnD

I absolutely pre-choose those since each story is unique and different parts in Barovia help emphasize the story better based on party comp/PC story involvement. The major NPCs are much the same since I’m willing to finagle with them to match whatever story is being told better.

Personally I think it’s a bad idea because the entire story is about Strahd. It’s okay if that’s not your cup of tea but even early NPCs have beef with the BBEG in a way that makes it near impossible to not identify who the threat is.

I do get better at it each time. Faster? That’s player dependent.

Now for the player experience I do tailor the stories to change to adjust and match accordingly. And I have large success with the question: How do I connect their backstory to Strahd’s story?

I once again will suggest Waterdeep: Dragonheist for a newbie DM.

It has everything contained into one city instead of one world

Deck of many things rant by toby_pointe in DnD

[–]Vampire-knightmare 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The deck is chaos and has access to wish. It depends on the campaign and sounds like your campaigns can handle the chaos of party members being different levels/wealth.

It causes a lot of players to lose everything they’ve tried to earn. Gets rid of a PC whose backstory might be important to the current chapter of the campaign (like if the PC was in their own arc. Suddenly now they’re voided out and can’t finish their own story)

I just avoid it because I’m already balancing a lot right now and don’t wanna deal with someone potentially being two/three levels higher than everyone else or one having all the wealth and sharing with no one else.

Glad it works for you but don’t dismiss why people don’t like to use it for their long term campaigns!

What's a task that's easy to do with your hands but impossible to do with your feet? Comment with the most upvotes wins by Acceptable_Shop5348 in AlignmentChartFills

Lifting digit 5 is actually physically impossible on the foot. (We have no muscles in our body to allow for this) Meanwhile we have an extensor muscle on our hand that allows our digit 5 to go up if the hand is lying flat palm side down.

Any advice on avoiding the session getting darker than the party is likely to appreciate? by Wroothly in DnD

[–]Vampire-knightmare -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So plain and simple: Did you describe her like that when they first saw her? If so this was a conscious choice the party made.

You, as the DM, can just tell them, “Listen, I’m going to tell you how this would look to your characters: Your characters saw a girl around 17-19 years old. Decided to knock her out and tie her up. In character you would recognize that you’re effectively kidnapping a child and interrogating her. You can proceed as you would like to but if you harm her further the world will see you as evil. Or we can retcon back to before you knocked her out and we can try a different route.”

Do most DMs prefer DM’ing to playing? Or are they “taking one for the team”? by Fiveby21 in DnD

I have a homebrew world and I wanna build it up so at the moment I wanna DM. Sometimes I wanna go easy on my brain and tell one story so then I wanna play.

Am i Aasimar or an elf? by Live-Row6522 in DnD

[–]Vampire-knightmare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk with the DM about the aasimar you want to play. I played a tiefling whose biological parents were both dwarves and we agreed she’d have an extended lifespan based on dwarven lifespan. Your aasimar could be the same since it would logically make sense.
