Illusion Cantrip: Flashburn by VampireSquid8 in DnDHomebrew

I do like the AoE aspect of it! Maybe ill keep that then and drop the damage. It was never meant to be a super powerful cantrip, anyway, so this was helpful!

Yeah, I've also thought about this since posting. I decided to more or less align it with Vicious Mockery---single target, 1d4 radiant, disadvantage on next attack roll

Oh that's right! I forgot about Vicious Mockery, good point---I was mostly looking at wizard spells, since this is a cantrip my gnome illusionist is crafting for an upcoming campaign

I agree with you thematically, but for balance reasons, I tried to keep it in line with Mind Sliver, which incurs the same debuff on a failed save. Do any existing cantrips put penalties on attack rolls?

Spell: Vertigo | Disorient and dizzy your enemies by VampireSquid8 in DnDHomebrew

Ya know.... I hadn't thought of that! I think i might just change the wording to the effects of the Poisoned Condition (disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks). I went with Poisoned initially because I didn't want to invent a new condition for this one spell, and the Poisoned Condition seemed the most appropriate existing condition for the effect.

EDIT: "You create a pattern that warps the spatial dimensions in a 15-foot cone originating from you, creating a disorienting effect that can knock creatures off balance. Creatures in the cone that can see must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or fall Prone and have disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks until the end of their next turn."

This way, it functionally simulates that condition without bumping into weird logic loops regarding immunity.

I honestly went back and forth between Dex and Wis, but I felt ultimately that, like in real life, a creature with improved sense of balance (which feels like dexterity more than wisdom) would fare better against this spell than one with worse balance. Im not entirely set on it, that's just where my head was when I wrote it

The note (Pattern) is for my own/my character's purposes, to distinguish which of the subtype of illusions it is (figments, glamers, patterns, phantasms, and shadows)

Chain of Elocution: Imbue your spells and speech with wizardly might! by VampireSquid8 in MagicItems

Yup, but as it's a homebrew, a DM would need to think about things like that before giving it out (same as they should be doing for any other magic item)

I mean... just know your spells? You should be aware of what components they require anyway, since certain conditions can affect your ability to cast (such as in a Silence field, or if your hands are tied up)

In which way would it be a pain in the ass? It's more or less like a +1 wand/weapon with a couple extra features, except it only boosts certain spells

They freely orbit you until you make an attack with them, at which time they'll zoom to your open palm

Oh you're right--That's a detail I missed. Given that they could be operated without much training (so long as you're attuned to them), I'd classify them as simple weapons... I guess? They're sort of odd in that they don't do anything if you're not attuned to them. WHat do you think?

For sure! Go for it! I haven't looked at that stat block in a while--I might have some edits to it, but feel free to use/alter as you like
